  • I modify my Garage #5 with a wood chisel, wire stripper, and flat heat screw driver. Full tear down, modification, and put it back together.
    Correction: I believe the thumb-screw is #4-48 threaded, it isn't #4-40 for sure, but it is hard to confirm with just three threads to measure.

    I’m going to comment on this video as I go. Two things I want to state off the start. First, I love your rendering of the bit holder, Leatherman should build exactly what you designed! The ability to use the ratcheting extension sideways is a wonderful idea. If they are concerned about strength, I would be fine with using the slotted profile of the Leatherman extensions to retain as much rigidity as possible. Second, your rendering of the awl is ideal, including moving the wire stripper into the base of that tool. Though I would prefer the more angular design of the Wave. It allows for a broader range than the smaller wire stripper found in the original FREE series.
    Also, great observation on the blade profile! My wife made the same observation you did regarding the thumb stud allowing for a much easier blade deployment.
    Your chisel modification is ideal! Now if they just would have made the file slightly longer……
    One thing I noticed about the spacer that retains the bit, it appears that it could not be swapped into a different position because it does not fit the profile of the ramp but rather the tool frame instead.
    This is an excellent video! Your modifications are spot on! Thank you for doing this.
    One thought that strikes me. If I were in charge of the design of this tool, I would remove the micro driver. Incorporating that driver into the main driver seems like a no brainer to me. After giving this some thought, the one tool I would like to see in favor of that micro driver holder is a curved serrated blade. What would you recommend?

      I thought the package opener combo tool on the Leatherman Garage #5 was stolen from Victorinox multi-tools. You should try to get a job at Leatherman but not with the present management. Working for Leatherman would help any young engineer and shop person grow. Great comments txtoolcrib.

      The only curved serrated blade that comes to mind is from the Victorinox swiss tool. At least the black MXBS version I have. It's pretty unique and comes in handy more than one would expect. I've never taken it off the multitool, but maybe there's a chance it can be notched near the pivot area and used on the Garage #5. Probably a long shot though.
      Next best option would be to take a Free blade and dremel out a curved blade shape and either leave the edge plain or dremel out serrations manually. Seems pretty bothersome.

    Awesome video! I enjoyed watching it very much! I like the design of your bit driver! I would love to see Leatherman implement your design to be used with standard 1/4 inch bits on the Arc! I firmly believe that Leatherman needs to migrate away from the proprietary bits to standard 1/4 inch bits. I would also love to see a t-shank integrated into the Arc. So, one could swap the saw blades with a serrated blade. Keep up the great work! 😎👍🏻

    I'm working on getting the ARC when it's released and adding the spring loaded pliers and the package opener from the garage #005, possibly the serrated blade from the P4. Too bad the ARC won't have a similiar ruler as the one found on the Wave/Charge platform and Surge.

    I use the low strength purple 222 Loctite. It is designed for small screws like that and I am not sure why companies want to use blue or red. Maybe because there is a misunderstanding on how the purple works. Once it sets up you can still easily remove your screw so folks think it isn't working but that is by design. It won't come loose from just shock very easily you would really have to slam it around to make the screws loosen I am a little more liberal with it than blue or red when applying it and I like to let it set overnight before using the tool if possible but that is not necessary I have had really good luck with it for many years. The screws stay in place and I can remove them with ease when needed. I also make sure the screws and holes are very clean.

    • @ZapWizard
      @ZapWizard  Před rokem

      Low strength is probably good to use, but I haven't had any loosen up on me, what is left of the old thread locker on the threads jams it up okay.

    Love the work you do, I've had the thumbstuds and bit holder for the P4 for awhile. I can't wait to see, and buy, the holster you design for it. Do you think you could match the bronze from the blade for it? I kinda wish LM had bronzed some if the hardware they used, as well. Once you take the belt clip off, it is only on the blade.

    • @ZapWizard
      @ZapWizard  Před rokem +1

      I won't be able to match the bronze color. The colors of my holsters are set by Shapeways, however it is possible to paint the nylon holsters. In fact the one I show in the video is a grey model off a FormLabs Fuse 1 that I painted using a matte black lacquer paint.

    • @ZapWizard
      @ZapWizard  Před rokem +1

      The scalpel holder is 0.1" thick, which is more than the 0.07" thick saw. It was meant to replace the main blade for folks who can't legally have a locked blade or traveling. The T-Shank is 0.18" thick, which means you can swap out one of the thick blades or saw and a thin implement. (You may end up off by +/-0.1" due to the different sizes of the small implements)

Have you heard of them? if not you should check them out, they are what we always wanted from Leatherman! Modular tools! xD They are a new company so the product is not going to be as polished as the leatherman but thier idea is amazing to say the least. What makes them unique is that they open up thier tool and scale design templates to the public and encourages people who have the tools and skills like yourself to design and sell tool designs. • @ZapWizard
      @ZapWizard  Před 11 měsíci

      I just checked mine, I would say then when deployed there is a bit of wiggle left/right (perpendicular to the blade), maybe about 1.5mm of travel at the end of the blade. Tightening the hinge could make that smaller, but then harder to deploy. It is a balance of tolerance -vs- friction. On a larger blade you will find spring washers that help with this effect, but there probably wasn't room in this tight of a stack of tools.
