I saw them two times in Hamburg, Germany in 1988 and 1990. These shows were unforgettable. Rock’n’Roll at his best - dirty, spontaneously and funny. Never saw such a band like this. I miss them. Country Dick - what a loss. Greetings from Germany
Bands like The Beat Farmers, The Replacements, Long Ryders, The Blasters, and X were never thought of as "big" by the record companies. They all had cult fan bases, but nothing that would make them shine with the bean counters.
Agreed. He put Tommy Stinson and Bash & Pop on. Despite that they disappeared immediately. B&P deserved some serious attention. This Beat Farmers tune shows just how good this band was live.
I just heard of these guys cause I finally decided to try Redneck Rampage. Makes total sense they would be on Letterman. This was the era he had Warren Z on all the time
Why? Because they weren't vanilla corporate slop like the rest of the crap forced on us by the music industry which only cares about profits. Bands like the Beat Farmers, who likely would have loved to "make it big" were truer to their music than making sales. And for that we love them!
Today in 2022 the “ Farmers “ are playing in a Bar or neighborhood mall near you ….. & Yes they have definitely had their ups & downs during multiple member changes & a few deaths ((unfortunately,)and why they never made it huge on the National level is still beyond me as well. In this particular clip they must have given Dick the Accordion just to keep him occupied enough to stay out of trouble….😏. An amazing time in my life having followed them now for over 40 years , and with the currentline up of Jerry on lead guitar, his son Nate on backup ( & lead occasionally) and Joel ( bongo ) on drums & Chris ( Sully ) on bass , and Corbin singing , they still rock as well as ever . Jerry received the “ Life time achievement in music “ award here at Humphrey’s by the Bay a year or so ago , and as a long time friend & follower of most of the current members am Damn glad He has finally been recognized for the true musician he has always been !! Congratulations Jerry Raney.😊👍. And may you “ Band of misfits “ keep on rocking on .
The only time I ever saw Country Dick was as part of the Pleasure Barons where he sang a song or two. The rest of the time he stood behind the rest of the band making and drinking martinis.
Jerry Raney has always had incredible tone on that guitar of his. It ain't flashy, he just really knows how to work it. He's a great guitarist, as was Buddy Blue.
Jarski J., the American music landscape is littered for decades with great bands that never made it. It's tragic, monetary, and just fowl luck . . . you name it. Loved this band, also the V-Roys under Steve Earle's E-Squared Records. Country Dick on "Happy Boy"! I love my two doggies, but when I hear that song, I laugh my ass off . . . ALWAYS! Cheers!
joey harris is and was a tremendous talent. I remember when he was the lead guitarist in the "loudest folk band in america" with John Stewart. What a great great band that was as were the Beat Farmers.
To me Country Dick was the big star of this band, R.I.P Country Dick, He could of done stupid human tricks on Letterman with his beer juggling tricks..
I LOVE ME SOME JOEY HARRIS, JERRY RANEY, AND DARE I SAY IT ROLLE LOVE, BUT COUNTRY DICK OH MY, JUST BEYOND LOVE AND ADORATION AND HOTS FOR AND IM CLAIMING TO BE THE WOMAN TO GET A LIPLOCK ON HIM. PROUD OF THAT ACTUALLY!! LOL
The Beats never needed Buddy!! He was good but! This was one of San Diego's finest bands ever! Dick was the best w/a heart of gold. He will all ways be in my Life.( RIP) Your Brother from another mother, Franko's Sounds West Studios. San Diego's # 1 Studio of all time. I miss You's Guy's. Joey, Jerry, Rollie, & Who could ever 4 get Tommy,
Lots of bands like this at the time got fucked over by the music biz as in no support or didn't fit the mold. Like groups mentioned below, Southern Pacific, The Desert Rose Band, Highway 101 etc. Some moderate success but not "pushed" like others.
Joey's good, but he's no Buddy Blue. The original mix had something very special... I really think if given more time they were going to breakthru big. It wasn't meant to be. The band was never the same. Damn tragedy is what it was. Rhino Records did not support them at all, and Country Dick just had to demand more of his crazy ballads(great live) being on the studio releases...and Buddy left. Every incarnation has been good, and The Farmers are still great to see today(2018). But I think of what might have been if they had stayed together-- I KNOW they would have broke through! I almost wish Dick wasn't such a force(farce?) of nature in their live shows... if he'd have been happy with one or two ballads per LP, maybe...well shit they wuz tons 'o fun live, and I cherish the memories!
Have to say my two favorite songs off Tales of the New West (besides Happy Boy and California Kid) were Goldmine and Lost Weekend, both sang by Buddy Blue. Great memories.
sigmus61 Yep! Cheap beer, cheap grub, GREAT memories! I still have the cassette tape Buddy gave me with the demos for his solo work(which turned into THE JACKS) that he made after leaving. He just couldn't believe they were going to pacify Dick and allow more than two of his ballads on future LP's...he didn't really want any; wanted every song to be worth a shot at hitting big with a radio hit[i.e.-"legitimate" songs!]. Anyways, I think I might have the only copy of those song versions anymore, and his demo of "I'M MISSING YOU" has got to be one of the best vocal tour 'd forces by anybody ever! It's so much better than what ended up on the album it's not even funny. The greatest song & version he ever did! I miss my old schoolmate & friend so much. That song brings tears to my eyes hearing it...and now it's hard to play, cuz I'll tear up every time-- but it is so good! I still can't imagine why this (demo)version wasn't used on the release! Tragic! The Farmers are still a great band today(but I miss Buddy & Dick).
@@THE-HammerMan any chance you can post that on soundcloud? I would love to hear it. I was listening to Beat Farmers last night and watched live performance of him singing Gun Sale at the Church. What a great story bro, thanks for sharing. Sorry for your loss, sounds like you were close.
sigmus61 I thank you; their passing was a loss to everyone. I moved everything into storage when I came out to NYC for a job 4 years ago. I'll get that posted someday, Lord willing. I also have about 3 1/2 hours of The Rolling Stones in an L.A. recording studio. They let me make some cassettes of everything(non-stop) while I was up there delivering some ah, ah, ah, "inspirational nose candy" on my word of honor I'd never try to bootleg or make money off the tapes--which is fairly unheard of, being given to walk out of recording sessions with any tapes! I've kept my word all these years. There's some great stuff on them too, including the boys making mistakes & jokingly cursing each other out while laughing about how (whoever) "buggered it up again there mate!". Some day I'll get to the point where I'll go through my 6 storage units and dig out the killer rare stuff-- a lifetime spent saving thousands of vinyl and rarities...And flushing tons of bucks down the drain! I wouldn't trade the memories for a million dollars- different world, different times back then! As Edgar Winter said, "KEEP PLAYIN' THAT ROCK & ROLL!".
They did what they HAD to do. I knew Jerry Raney worked like crazy and just never stopped and maybe made some stupid choices early on but it's like one great band leader said, Rory Gallagher, you have to do what you feel is right....even though it's wrong. So Jerry just paid a price and went with fun instead of "Glory" ha ha. Seriously. It's really hard to get by sometimes much less be something. He was weird but he was a good guy

Greetings from Germany
You have good taste in music!
County Dick Montana on the accordion. God rest his soul.
Amen
Anton Figg taking his place on the drums...ahh, memories, memories
I can’t hear the accordion.
So tell me you, why this group never made it big ? I have all of their albums, dig them since - 87.
Jarski J. No support from their record label at all! Zero, zip, zilch!
Bands like The Beat Farmers, The Replacements, Long Ryders, The Blasters, and X were never thought of as "big" by the record companies. They all had cult fan bases, but nothing that would make them shine with the bean counters.
Frank Holly Too true; well said.
Because they would do something like play Letterman and play without their drummer Country Dick!
@@jtwjg1 Dick was playing accordion
Letterman always gave good exposure to some less mainstream musical acts. He’s a good man.

Oh, god I love this band ,.. when I was young these guys fill up all..love them in these days allso..
Better live than recorded, I'd say. Wish I could have seen a live show.... the vitality and musicianship really comes through here.

Letterman actually did go on the road with them.
If I should have to get a real job, I'm going to work with the Beat Farmers.
Typical of Paul wanting to steal the spotlight.
Love the Beat Farmers, but I think they could have picked a better song for the TV Debut
What year did this air? Man, this smokes; and five guitars?! Holy shit!
These guys exuded COOL
Checking in!
Jerry Ramey. Shreds
