FIRST DAY of the brand-new low cost Lumo train: WOW! (TRIP REPORT)

- Good morning! The date is Monday 25th October 2021, the launch date of brand-new low cost operator Lumo. Owned by FirstGroup, Lumo is an open-access operator who operates trains between London and Edinburgh, as a direct rival not only to London North Eastern Railway (LNER), who have always had the monopoly of the rail corridor, but also to easyJet and British Airways - indeed, London to Edinburgh is the UK's busiest "air bridge"!
So, will Lumo manage to compete with these well-established companies? Their main selling point are their attractive, unbeatable prices, and for this ride on the inaugural northbound service I paid under £10. Worth it?

Very balanced video. Thanks for highlighting the luggage problem which is even worse than I thought! I managed to get a window seat on one of my trips by specifying a table seat. But there are only 2 tables per coach! The timings are not that much faster than LNER as they have to use existing spare paths. The loading chaos I observed at Newcastle was merely passengers trying to find anywhere to put their luggage.
These are minor niggles, which once it gets popular, will smoothen out (hopefully)

This cheaper service will actually attract more people who will travel more often to visit families, like a weekend commuter line

Excellent video Ben. Very comprehensive and well filmed! God how noisy was it onboard 😂 And someone near you had a corona cough 😷 I really enjoyed it but just some advice, to keep audience retention, try and cut it down to around 15-20 mins as that's the sweet spot for 'our' type of videos ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻

High speed railway makes more sense in Europe because the countries are small and distances aren't huge.
Airlines seem to hold you hostage and you actually spend more time reaching the airport than actually flying

Its all in the seats. if GWR and LNER replaced their seats with the same seats as on Lumo, then 80x trains would be instantly more liked.
Seats without windows are called laptop seats
They let you work without glare from the window
I think there's way too much of those on this train. That's why they should provide a seat map showing the arrangement of the windows!

Agreed. That's really required, and with alloted seats it will reduce the chaos at boarding the train

That's true - but their main aim being to compete with LNER on the London - Newcastle/Edinburgh, it'd make sense to make a limited amount of stops, which can save a good 15/20 minutes compared to LNER!

Lumo could of ordered few more Class 803s so that they can work their trains as 10-Car formation between Edinburgh Waverley and London Kings Cross. Same with Hull Trains Class 802 Paragon. As LNER operates services using 1-Car and 2 5-Car Class 800 and 9-Car Class 801 on services they operate on. Same with the GWR Class 800 and Class 802 that operates to & from London Paddington.
The trains so far have all been quite packed. 5 cars doesn't look like it'll be enough...

Indeed. Maybe Lumo and Hull Trains could of ordered the 9-Car variation of the Class 800 and Class 801 that would allow more extra capacity.

It’s don’t like like Lumo consider disabled people with the door level access so assistance would be required which is disappointing for a 2020/2021 built train. I hope in the future it will be law that all trains will have level access with the platforms.😞
I do worry about capacity on these trains though with it only been five cars with people possibly preferring Lumo over other train operators.
Other than that a Morden & low cost way to travel which is how it should be in in the 21st century!! 😊
Yeah, in the UK we've mainly got high-floored trains, sadly. The trains were extremely crowded in the first week or two it seems - my train being the first, it was reservation only, but many of the services after that were full and standing. No doubt Lumo will consider ordering more trains in the future!

Haha, that would have been fun, but I guess that completely prevents them from changing their brand identity if they so wish to in the future.
Those cheap Lump fares didn't last long. I've just checked and over the next month or so their either the same as of even more expensive than LNER. Nice enough trains and staff but there's no back up if something goes wrong. At least with LNER there's always another service to catch
It's strange they are not keeping to their promise of low fares... I'd assume you can get an LNER train if a Lumo train is cancelled (or vice-versa) depending on the situation
@@trainlagged the really cheap fares were an introductory offer for a month or so. Generally there isn’t really that much of a difference in price if you have a good look. I did get a single from Newcastle to London for 19 quid as part of the promotions but the cheapest I’ve seen it since is about 29 which isn’t that much less than LNER.
When there have been delays or cancellations they usually tell you to jump on Hull Trains or even Avanti West Coast, I assume because they’re all part of the same company.
