@@DonnieBAllDay What are you doing here? Its a short tactical spear for home defense in confined spaces like hallways and rooms. Its a niche and specific use item. This is not a multi function tool. @DonnieBAllDay I think you are missing the point entirely. This is a spear meant for stabbing a person. It's not meant to baton wood or break through doors. This review was ridiculous. It's kind of like testing a sledgehammer to see how well it will fire a bullet and complaining when it doesn't do well. By the way, interior doors are weak and can be easily kicked in. So, wasting time trying to bash or cut through with this spear is just as ridiculous as this dudes review 😂
Where you grip the spear depends on the situation you are in. Sometimes choking up is necessary in very close quarters. Also, a reverse grip can be used for striking with the staff portion while having the blade in reserve for a finishing blow. Also, it's a short spear, so yeah, it's short. Not all spears are long, nor do they have to be. There's all different kinds of spears for a variety of situations and applications.

Very.good and objective revue .The mighty United Cutlery M48 Talon Survival Spear appears to be a attempt to improve on a weapon that the designer knows nothing about . And it does not matter one bit , it's designed to look cool and sell .
@Donnie D All Day I know you expressed your misgivings and displeasure with M48 products in general, but I don't know - this Talon Survival Spear could work for guys of shorter stature (say, 5'7" and below). The 48" length could work very well for shorter guys. What do you think?
It could work well for anyone really. It isn't bad, I just wish it was more. Its terrible in tight quarter combat. Its terrible from a distance. It needs ideal situations like close quarter with open boundary
@@DonnieBAllDay Hmmm, I see. Well, history tells us that the short(er) spear actually did quite well in military combat. For example, we know that infantry (light infantry?) used them quite a bit all over the world - knights, when unhorsed, would deliberately shorten their lances, so this gives us a powerful clue about the use of the short spear - they were definitely used by foot soldiers on the ground.
@@DonnieBAllDay The next thing I would say is that we know that Shaka Zulu, one of the greatest African kings ever and whose military tactics are still studied today, practically invented the short spear over there. Called the Iklwas, it ranged from two to four feet (hint, hint) with a rather oversized spearhead that was used for close quarter melee fighting, short spear in one hand, shield in the other. The longer spears that his warriors carried were for use as missles (thrown) and for keeping the enemy at bay when they tried to charge.
@@DonnieBAllDay Agreed! Question: Have you ever done a review and/or put to the acid test the Zulu spear? That would be a very interesting video to see!
The reality is a short spear is a tactical spear. It's obviously useless against someone with a gun, but you outmatch someone with a knife and ALL wild animals become prey; alligators, bears, wolves, wolverines, coyotes, pumas, dogs, and snakes. Finger groves looked to be for casual walking (short people) and ease of retrieval from alongside a pack. I would have preferred grips at the top, the middle, and the bottom, or the top and the bottom. The wooden door test is enough for me. Frankly, that thrust is the main purpose of the spear and I'd trust my bowie knife to handle sharpness, alongside my machete. Thanks for the review.

Great review. As far as length, the must successful warriors who used spears as a main weapon, the Zulus of south Africa used a spear that was about the same size in CQC, the "Iklwa". They had long spears also that thew would throw from a distance, but in close this was it. It's never a good idea to throw your weapon at your opponent since it will be the last time you see it, and it can be used against you now. The Romans did something similar, throwing a long thin spear that would stop the enemy from using their shields, and they would go to their short gladius short sword. Enough of the history BS. This spear can be just what you need in an emergency. If you're out hiking where up can't pack a piece, and a hungry bear starts to make advances on you, this might be a great help. I think this spear was meant for Close Quarter Combat,if any at all. Not to pricy. Somethings could better built, but worth the money compared to what's out there.
