German fans have been traveling in huge numbers to London to watch NFL games so it was great the NFL finally came to Germany. And what a show! The smiles on Brady and Carroll after the game was something to see.
I've been to NFL Europe games. I told everyone that Germans LOVE American football. It was a party atmosphere, an atmosphere that the NFL could never match at home. No one believed me. I had a blast there. I hope to see more games played in Germany,
Singing Country Roads had nothing to do with John Denver, the US or the football game. They could have played water polo against Czechoslovakia and they still would have sung it, because the song is a very popular party (read: drinking) song in Europe and especially in Munich which is home to the Oktoberfest. Country Roads, Sweet Caroline, Don’t stop believin’ are being played in every Oktoberfest tent for decades. Every half awake Munich resident can sing these songs when the beat drops. Especially in a crowd.
It's not just Europe. I subscribe to a bunch of sailing VLOGs on youtube, and the one constant seems like everyone all over the world knows that song. These sailors could be at some remote island in Indonesia, in a small town, and those people will know it. Very strange.
As a german who had season tickets for the NFL Europe. In fact it is in germany a traditional american Football stadium song. Thats the main reason why it was played!
We german fans waited for this for years. We were ready in 2015 to be honest. But now, in 2022, it was like the NFL opened the gates to a massive toy store who we’ve all waited patiently in front for 7 years. When you look at the ticket market, we could have filled 3 Allianz Arenas easily! It was a great experience. It was a lot of fun. And I think every single German fan is sooo happy we got this great feedback from the american media and fans. This was a big concern. We wanted to have fun, but we also wanted the NFL, the teams, the players, the fans at home- having to watch a game for breakfast… to have fun! Ultimately we wanted to show to everybody: We. Love. Football! ❤

But this event shows that no matter where you're from... whether from Germany or from Russia, from the Ukraine or from Turkey, from the USA or from China... No matter where we / you come from!!! With the 17 games regular season, the math is pretty simple: 8 home games, 8 away games and 1 game on a neutral site for each team. So the degree of freedom is 16 games per season. That neutral site would most likely be an international game, and next to London, Mexico and Munich there could also be Frankfurt, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Tokio, Sydney or Katar, to name but a few. But it could also be Hawaii or San Diego or other former NFL cities in the US, like Oakland or St. Louis. Or a great College stadium, like Michigan or Beaver. The possibilities are endless. And no franchise would have to move, and no home fan base would have less home games than up to 2020. And the stress of travel would be very similar for every team. And the teams could create individual cooperations, like some are doing already.
I am a Fan from german and i waited for this Game for about 15 years after the NFLEurope was closed down. Pls come over here maybe every year or every two years, BUT dont relocate a Team or even worse a Division to Europe. It dont belong here and it would likely kill the aura of Awesomnes around the game. Take the advice fom the OP here and take 8 Games or 16 Games a year abroad or to special places. Packers Viking at Camp Randall would be great and with half of the Teams gaining a 9th Homegame it would be great to bring that games in other Venues.
The popularity of this song amongst Germans is more related to it still being "singable" while having drunk some liters of beer. It is among a handful of songs that is played at a lot of parties past 2 a.m. to keep the people at the party and sell more beer this way. Through singing and drinking people connect, get more loose and enjoy their time together even more. And singing and chanting just belongs to European football/soccer mentality that is played in these stadiums. So it feels rather unnatural and strange to see thousands of people sitting there for hours at a game not keep themselves somehow entertained.

Also, the newly constructed Santiago Bernabeu Stadium (Home of Real Madrid CF) has been outfitted with an interchangeable American Football Pitch to accomodate NFL Games.
I am with King. Play 8 to 10 games there a season and watch the build. Munich, berlin, madrid, barcelona, paris , amsterdam , london, warsaw and maybe stockholm or prague. There you go
I think there should be separate leagues with some potential to introduce games on international levels, like UEFA champions league or the like where the x best ranked teams qualify for the next season. Maybe this could be part of the pre-season then actually. Currently, some top "soccer" teams from Europe visit America as part of their preparation program regularly and play a show-off tournament there. Maybe something like that could also make sense in Europe somehow. NY-Munich is a roughly 10h flight which is quite demanding and as such should only be forced upon teams sparsely.
I totally appreciated the NFL came to germany. And i would love to see a game per season here on a regular basis, like it is in England. And from the NFLs perspective it makes totally sense to try to get more into the german market. U will find no bigger market to sell your merch and other stuff, except maybe for China or Japan (eventhough i dont know how much they are into american football). But i dont think the NFL should over do it with to many games in foreign countries. The shouldnt forget their heritage and their fans in the US.

While we Germans might like the game and adore some of it's teams and players, the idea of a league as a closed franchise with teams beeing personal property of Mr. XYZ and no relegation will brush our understanding of sport totally the wrong way. When several big european soccer clubs tried to set up a franchise called Super League along those lines of thinking, the german clubs that were asked to join (Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund) did not dare to do so, knowing the fans would not have been amused. The Bundesliga teams have to be property of the related member owned clubs by at least 51%, so the normal club members are, at least on paper, in control if it comes to the crunch. the one team that sort of circumvented this, RB Leipzig (controlled by the management of Red Bull who hijacked an existing small club), is loathed by many German soccer fans for exactly this reason. Also, the mortal combat at the end of the table where teams have to fight relegation and the connected loss in revenue is always delivering entertainment, emotions and sometimes stories that pass into legend. You might consider partnering with the existing german/european teams and find things you can do together. Some teams on this side of the pond should be competition enough for some friendlies, and in the long run you might set up transatlantic playoffs or something.
German football (we’re talking NFL football in this case) are very much familiar with the concept of franchises and no relegation in closed leagues. The European League of Football is a closed league with almost half the teams from Germany and those teams are very well supported. European fans are not stupid. They recognise great competition and growth when they see it, regardless of the structure. Of course we European fans rebel against the Super League, but we know that different sports come with different traditions. American fans of European football were just as mad as us

My intention was to point out some mentality differences that might present pitfalls for any promoter/association trying to import the American system en bloc. The GFL, to my knowledge at least, is organised in a two-level league with relegation. I certainly did not want to declare anyone as beeing stupid. As long as the fans are happy, it is OK.
I think if they actually go forward with European expansion its gotta be 2 teams. Munich and London and teams playing them over there would always have to stay 2 weeks and play both while there. They'd have to play 2home 2 away 2 home 2 away for most of the season
People are saying that it isn't feasible to have NFL teams based in Europe to the the distance. However, if such a team had a schedule that had four away games followed by four home games and if the team had a US practice facility for the away games, it might be feasible sometime in the future.
I can see it now the Eagles in Germany right around Christmas and it snows and they get utterly destroyed by their opponent. International incident in five, four three.. or better yet make the game against Dallas and and the leader of Germany shows up in Dallas attire, hell you may wind up with a full-blown War. Don't look at everything too closely. We are looking forward to 2 more games this year in Germany. Frankfurt and Munich again. The Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs will play a home game here. Dates are not fixed yet. Coming after the Super Ball.

I started watching the Eagles halfway through season this year, the last NFL game before that was the Eagles Super Bowl win in 2018 three days after it occurred. Why three days after it occurred Because the Night of the Super Bowl my mom was on her deathbed and I couldn't deal with my mom dying and Eagles losing. Yes I know the Eagles didn't lose and also my mom didn't die , she lasted another 6 months. She was 92 and she hung in there long enough to see the Eagles win a Super Bowl you can't ask for much more out of life. I watch the game sitting on the edge of her bed because it was the first day she was coherent enough to watch the replay. Once again thank you for the reply, have a nice day.
I feel one benefit owners could reap would be revitalizing a fanbase, and capitalizing on an entire countries economy. Take a less popular team, or one dealing with less than ideal finances, put them as the ONLY team in a country and continent, they will have an entire continent buying tickets and jerseys
Only problem I see is that our late-night game would be roughly 7-10 hours "earlier" for you then while your champions league final would need to be played somewhere after noon as your prime-time would be like 2-4 am for most parts of Europe.

the answer to why the nfl did a league in Europe and then ended it in 2007 and focused on games just in London was because the only profitable games were in London now yes the NFL Europa league focused on European American football teams but if of them as just tasting the waters buy having a league of European teams the nfl was able to get a good idea of the American football fanbase in Europe eliminating the chances for American fans screwing up the numbers showed that the UK had the biggest American football fanbase so London was chosen to have American team come over to play so the nfl could grow the fanbase the whole reason the nfl started playing games in other countries is because the NFL grew to such a point where it couldn't grow anymore its captured 60% and the hit a point of in which they couldn't capture any more so they looked internationally which started with the NFL Europa league and became regular season nfl games in London and they recently included Germany in the list after being confident that not only did the London games grow the fanbase in the UK but it grew the fanbase in Europe as well

The venues had to apply. If you haven't applied, you can't make a decision and you won't get anything. Düsseldorf had applied and was not selected. And there would not be more than 2 venues in Germany.
I was at the game. As far as I could tell, everyone around me was an American. It was cheaper going to the Munich game than the Patriots game last year. Hotels were half the cost. Flight about the same
No way in hell there is going to be NFL in Europe. Owners want billion dollar stadiums with all the amenities to be funded by the locals. That model does not exist there and if it did the soccer teams would be at the front of the line.
The Division Idea doesn't consider the cultural difference. European Fans usually stick to their teams and are what in the US is called "Die Hard" by default. I personally don't know a single person that would ever switch his supported team. No matter what sport. So new Teams wouldn't have much of a fan base.
I still wonder how the fans in the US see these games in Abroadistan. Yeah, it's cool for us in Europe, but I cannot start to imagine what Bayern or Dortmund fans would make of their team playing a regular season home game in Iowa or Los Angeles. Do they get a rebate on their season tickets?

The fan community is present in Germany and Europe for Football. 3 million tickets were requested worldwide for 72,000 tickets.What does that say? It only takes place once a year. The fans don't miss that.
Regarding the atmosphere: for us Germans and european football (soccer) fans it was just a normal game. That is how we do it in Europe. And please don't forget the NFL Europe days in Germay!

Munich is a sport city with the perfect infrastructure, a 1.5 Million City with the flair of a small city with an old "modern" city center. Also the culture with old buildings, historic beer halls, Bavarian King Resident, etc. Next thing Munich have the experience with big sport events like this. Olympic Games, World Cups, FC Bayern games, UEFA CL Finals, etc. Also other events like Oktoberfest, big fairs and a lot of tourists who will visit Munich the hole year. And the most important for the NFL Munichs have the money. Thats the big problem in South America and also Mexico. 150$ for a team jersey and a cap, no problem for the german fan. In South America and Mexico you will have a problem to sell this. Same with ticket prizes.
I disagree it wasn't munich people alone, nor germans. It was a bunch of european football fans who were celebrating the NFL coming to central europe. I think different places in europe can bring the same excitement for teams and fans.

Seahawks shouldn’t be traveling to Germany or England, they want a game in Japan ok. Have them play NY or som other east coast team in Japan. Seattle distance traveled every year is leaps and bounds more than every other team in the league. Adding Germany is just ridiculous. They will be 20,000 more miles traveled than some teams.
Although I don't believe a European division is going to happen (ever).. Or should, even, it is the "National" Football League after all.. And I am German btw... If they were trying to set it up, I'm not as sure as Peter King is about the relocation issue 🤔 They mentioned Jacksonville, that's clearly not an NFL success story.. But nobody else? Really?? How about the Chargers: they're very obviously not at home in LA and may never be.. I doubt going back to San Diego is in their cards, if they were even welcomed back.. And going somewhere else within the states does not seem like a promising alternative for this franchise anymore either (although STL deserves a team)... Only after the NFL integrates foreign teams in the league you would come close to call the winner a 'world champion'. It was and is a pure US-American championship, no matter if there´s a bunch of players from abroad. The whole team is supposed to be from abroad, play according the same regulation against US-teams, THEN you may have an approach for the world. And then maybe also some challenge, the US teams maybe shortened in total count for the league but that would give space to variety. Think about it. The fan base in some countries like Germany is ready. So, open up for the world to become a truly 'WORLD CHAMPION'. Btw, take a look in the league regulation of football (you call it soccer) and especially the Champions League. Depending on the success in the last season, one or the other country gets their count of teams that will qualify to the upcoming champions league season enlarged or reduced. Imagine that, how would the NFL develop, if maybe 2 German teams, 2 Spanish, 2 Mexican, 2 ... would join in and give the established teams a hard time? Challenge accepted? Or are you afraid of loosing?
Peter King is just showing his ignorance (and that of many Americans). They do realise that Americans have heard of the beatles and other european artists. Music about home doesn't have to be about your home to strike a chord with people. I don't mean that as an insult but even as ultra isolationist and very self absorbed nation culture from Europe arrives in America, of course it happens in reverse when America produces so much media. Plus European nations don't need an excuse to get pissed and sing regardless of what it is.
At your age how do you not know that Europeans sing these songs at their matches(soccer). These songs have been adopted by the fans during historic team runs. Sweet Caroline was all the rage during the English's last World cup run, now most fans will sing it during games throughout Europe. I must say it is better than the drunken dibbling insults they throw when they are not singing. As an American sports fan, we heckle, yell and complain very loud, but they act like caged hungry animals. Vicious drunk fans unlike any pro league fans I have ever seen and heard (everywhere in Europe), hell NY, Philly, LA, Cleveland fans are complete angels, level headed and rocket scientists compared.
Regarding expansion- the league should expand by 8 teams, 4 in Europe and 4 in America- bring back the “Central” division, each conference would be 5 four team divisions

Playing a finals tournament against American teams eg. 8 division winners each... 16 teams knockout. I'd rather say they already maxed out their potential in the American market and more and more people got broke in the past few years which led to a decline in revenue. So NFL is doing what business do in such situations, they expand to new markets.

75,000 fans were singing Country Road and Sweet Caroline in Germany for an NFL game! Loved it.

While we Germans might like the game and adore some of it's teams and players, the idea of a league as a closed franchise with teams beeing personal property of Mr. XYZ and no relegation will brush our understanding of sport totally the wrong way. When several big european soccer clubs tried to set up a franchise called Super League along those lines of thinking, the german clubs that were asked to join (Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund) did not dare to do so, knowing the fans would not have been amused. The Bundesliga teams have to be property of the related member owned clubs by at least 51%, so the normal club members are, at least on paper, in control if it comes to the crunch. the one team that sort of circumvented this, RB Leipzig (controlled by the management of Red Bull who hijacked an existing small club), is loathed by many German soccer fans for exactly this reason.
Also, the mortal combat at the end of the table where teams have to fight relegation and the connected loss in revenue is always delivering entertainment, emotions and sometimes stories that pass into legend.
You might consider partnering with the existing german/european teams and find things you can do together. Some teams on this side of the pond should be competition enough for some friendlies, and in the long run you might set up transatlantic playoffs or something.
German football (we’re talking NFL football in this case) are very much familiar with the concept of franchises and no relegation in closed leagues. The European League of Football is a closed league with almost half the teams from Germany and those teams are very well supported. European fans are not stupid. They recognise great competition and growth when they see it, regardless of the structure. Of course we European fans rebel against the Super League, but we know that different sports come with different traditions. American fans of European football were just as mad as us
@@alessandroacquistapace2321 Thank you for pointing out to me that the EFL is a franchise without relegation; I was not aware of that. My intention was to point out some mentality differences that might present pitfalls for any promoter/association trying to import the American system en bloc. The GFL, to my knowledge at least, is organised in a two-level league with relegation. I certainly did not want to declare anyone as beeing stupid. As long as the fans are happy, it is OK.

I think if they actually go forward with European expansion its gotta be 2 teams. Munich and London and teams playing them over there would always have to stay 2 weeks and play both while there. They'd have to play 2home 2 away 2 home 2 away for most of the season

The NFL in foreign countries works as long as you keep it an event. Not sustainable over a long season with multiple games.
People are saying that it isn't feasible to have NFL teams based in Europe to the the distance. However, if such a team had a schedule that had four away games followed by four home games and if the team had a US practice facility for the away games, it might be feasible sometime in the future.
I can see it now the Eagles in Germany right around Christmas and it snows and they get utterly destroyed by their opponent. International incident in five, four three.. or better yet make the game against Dallas and and the leader of Germany shows up in Dallas attire, hell you may wind up with a full-blown War. I started watching the Eagles halfway through season this year, the last NFL game before that was the Eagles Super Bowl win in 2018 three days after it occurred. Why three days after it occurred Because the Night of the Super Bowl my mom was on her deathbed and I couldn't deal with my mom dying and Eagles losing. Yes I know the Eagles didn't lose and also my mom didn't die , she lasted another 6 months. She was 92 and she hung in there long enough to see the Eagles win a Super Bowl you can't ask for much more out of life. I watch the game sitting on the edge of her bed because it was the first day she was coherent enough to watch the replay. Once again thank you for the reply, have a nice day.

I feel one benefit owners could reap would be revitalizing a fanbase, and capitalizing on an entire countries economy. Take a less popular team, or one dealing with less than ideal finances, put them as the ONLY team in a country and continent, they will have an entire continent buying tickets and jerseys

While noone ever came up with the idea of a Super Bowl outside the US, there were serious debates of having the Champions League Final in Katar.
Only problem I see is that our late-night game would be roughly 7-10 hours "earlier" for you then while your champions league final would need to be played somewhere after noon as your prime-time would be like 2-4 am for most parts of Europe.

the answer to why the nfl did a league in Europe and then ended it in 2007 and focused on games just in London was because the only profitable games were in London now yes the NFL Europa league focused on European American football teams but if of them as just tasting the waters buy having a league of European teams the nfl was able to get a good idea of the American football fanbase in Europe eliminating the chances for American fans screwing up the numbers showed that the UK had the biggest American football fanbase so London was chosen to have American team come over to play so the nfl could grow the fanbase the whole reason the nfl started playing games in other countries is because the NFL grew to such a point where it couldn't grow anymore its captured 60% and the hit a point of in which they couldn't capture any more so they looked internationally which started with the NFL Europa league and became regular season nfl games in London and they recently included Germany in the list after being confident that not only did the London games grow the fanbase in the UK but it grew the fanbase in Europe as well

The venues had to apply. If you haven't applied, you can't make a decision and you won't get anything. Düsseldorf had applied and was not selected. And there would not be more than 2 venues in Germany.

I was at the game. As far as I could tell, everyone around me was an American. It was cheaper going to the Munich game than the Patriots game last year. Hotels were half the cost. Flight about the same

No way in hell there is going to be NFL in Europe. Owners want billion dollar stadiums with all the amenities to be funded by the locals. That model does not exist there and if it did the soccer teams would be at the front of the line.

The Division Idea doesn't consider the cultural difference. European Fans usually stick to their teams and are what in the US is called "Die Hard" by default. I personally don't know a single person that would ever switch his supported team. No matter what sport. So new Teams wouldn't have much of a fan base.

I don't think you can easily compare them. The NFL organization and the owners of the teams think about business. The fan community is present in Germany and Europe for Football. 3 million tickets were requested worldwide for 72,000 tickets.What does that say?

Regarding the atmosphere: for us Germans and european football (soccer) fans it was just a normal game. That is how we do it in Europe. And please don't forget the NFL Europe days in Germay!

Munich is a sport city with the perfect infrastructure, a 1.5 Million City with the flair of a small city with an old "modern" city center. Also the culture with old buildings, historic beer halls, Bavarian King Resident, etc.
Next thing Munich have the experience with big sport events like this. Olympic Games, World Cups, FC Bayern games, UEFA CL Finals, etc. Also other events like Oktoberfest, big fairs and a lot of tourists who will visit Munich the hole year. And the most important for the NFL Munichs have the money. Thats the big problem in South America and also Mexico. 150$ for a team jersey and a cap, no problem for the german fan. In South America and Mexico you will have a problem to sell this. Same with ticket prizes.

Seahawks shouldn’t be traveling to Germany or England, they want a game in Japan ok. Have them play NY or som other east coast team in Japan. Only after the NFL integrates foreign teams in the league you would come close to call the winner a 'world champion'. It was and is a pure US-American championship, no matter if there´s a bunch of players from abroad. The whole team is supposed to be from abroad, play according the same regulation against US-teams, THEN you may have an approach for the world. And then maybe also some challenge, the US teams maybe shortened in total count for the league but that would give space to variety. Think about it. The fan base in some countries like Germany is ready. So, open up for the world to become a truly 'WORLD CHAMPION'.
Btw, take a look in the league regulation of football (you call it soccer) and especially the Champions League.
Depending on the success in the last season, one or the other country gets their count of teams that will qualify to the upcoming champions league season enlarged or reduced.
Imagine that, how would the NFL develop, if maybe 2 German teams, 2 Spanish, 2 Mexican, 2 ... would join in and give the established teams a hard time? Challenge accepted? Or are you afraid of loosing?

Peter King is just showing his ignorance (and that of many Americans). They do realise that Americans have heard of the beatles and other european artists. Music about home doesn't have to be about your home to strike a chord with people. I don't mean that as an insult but even as ultra isolationist and very self absorbed nation culture from Europe arrives in America, of course it happens in reverse when America produces so much media. At your age how do you not know that Europeans sing these songs at their matches(soccer). These songs have been adopted by the fans during historic team runs. Sweet Caroline was all the rage during the English's last World cup run, now most fans will sing it during games throughout Europe.

As an American sports fan, we heckle, yell and complain very loud, but they act like caged hungry animals. I'd rather say they already maxed out their potential in the American market and more and more people got broke in the past few years which led to a decline in revenue. So NFL is doing what business do in such situations, they expand to new markets.
