- Turbos and superchargers: pretty expensive, right? We think so too. We were looking at a fan setup in one of our offices and thought to ourselves "hey, we could make a turbo/supercharger out of that for 'almost' free". But the big questions is... will it work? Or will it set on fire? Thanks to Scumbag Labs, these questions can be answered.

My thoughts exactly. Good running engine first, dyno'd and sent down track for baseline BEFORE ever installing some janky crap like that. This video was a waste of time and proves nothing at all.
@@chanceloney9679 I mean, it's the Hoonigans. The whole point of this series is just goofing off thinly veiled as scientific experiments. I don't think they mean to prove anything, so long as they get to do dumb shit with cars, but yes, they should have gotten a mechanically sound car.
I'd wager the restriction they caused is why it ran so poorly and that they actually cost 30hp and made nothing significant.
@@velyse It definitely wasn't firing on all cylinders. Note that it still ran like absolute shit with the fans on, which should at least provide atmospheric pressure.
You could at least get it running on all cylinders first....
They should just pull the probably 307 out and put a 350 in then try it again

Watching brad build exhaust for this live was great... Safety squints, welds the exhaust 3 times, holds for a second, breaks off, then he knocks over the argon tank. It was like a one man three stooges, and I loved every minute of it.

Im pretty sure the reason it made more power wasnt because it was making boost, but because the fan blades while running were less of an obstruction on air flowing into the engine. It sounded like it was running crazy rich. So I imagine if you ran an open carb it would have made more power.

New cap rotary button wires and plugs on top of the carb rebuild would run a heck of a lot better
No shit, it sounds like it's running on 6 cylinders max. The way it's cutting out sounds like lack of fuel. Probably just a plugged fuel filter. $15 at Autozone and it's fixed.
I don't think that carburetors there right kind of carburetor for a turbo car to begin with and it wasn't held and an enclosure. Therefore it will not run if it was making any kind of boost above 7 pounds because it would not receive any fuel

Crescious and imagine if you could upgrade the car to actually make power, but you can turn the turbos on and off. Imagine it’s like turning on nitrous where you get a huge boost of power. Not true to life but cool.

TheOdd101 nope. A 1000hp engine typically uses 200-250 to drive the blower, leaving 750 to 800 useable hp at the crank. So basically that would require a Tesla motor just to drive the blower + battery system etc.
A regular exhaust driven turbo is much simpler, smaller and lighter and uses mostly wasted energy in the exhaust system to drive it.

Yea it would go harder if your ripped off the twin turdos completely but we all love the hoonigans for their insane ideas lol, even with them activated they're still loosing power boost is "PSI" it's a pressure not fan propellers blocking the air intake mighty car mods and roadkill have done similar things using leaf blowers and the only way they made power is if they had a valve to pressurise it then open the valve, so to summarize what they done:with turdos on =less power then stock, - with turdos off = even less power then turdos on haha

Matt L It's funny you say that. Back in '04 we bought an '82 Corvette with the Crossfire Injection. It even had a Badge on it advertising that it was a Crossfire as if Chevrolet was proud of what they made. Needless to say the speedometer only went to 85 and only way to bury it was a long (very long) straight away. It was a complete turd. It looked good as far as body lines and design but completely useless unless you were drag racing a Mini Cooper in the other lane. And even then the good ole emission standards of the early 80's design would allow a Corvette to get stomped by ANYONE'S average daily driver.
Peggy Caudle I mean the f body engine itself is borderline OK if you ditch the intake manifold but it’s still a 305. The corvette version is a little better because it’s a 350 but like you said they’re all choked up by emissions gear and terrible cam specs. It’s much easier(and cheaper) to go for a vortec 350 or even a junkyard 5.3 for the amount of work needed to get any power out of them

At this point I still have no idea how the heck did you guys come up with the term 'turdos', but TWIN TURDOS FTW CUZ WHY NOT?!
Suggestion to make the turdos more powerful: make a Y-shape over-the-carb 2-to-1 piping instead of the T-shape you're having now.. Y-shape pipe offers less turbulent air than T-shape pipe, which equals to better air flow, and equals to bigger power potentials..

Speed? What speed? This POS is prolly running on half its cylinders.
If that thing was going 300 Mph, you could be right. Otherwise not. There is nearly no ram air effect at lower speeds.
@UGU Zach - Aerodynamics start having a small-but-noticeable effect on race car aero at 60 MPH and ram-air does have an effect - albeit a small one - at even lower speeds. Whether or not it could overcome air resistance to provide some tangible numbers; that I don't know.
@@sarrassgaming1537 - Aerodynamics work at any speed and they scale with speed and ram-air can be utilized at speeds as slow as 30-40 MPH. Vintage racers knew this as, for a brief time in the late 1920's; racing drivers would often fit modified radio horns to down-draft carburetors to achieve a ram-air effect.

I don't know the history behind this car, but a few things are off on this test.
You guys should do a dyno run without the contraption on the intake and see how much power it makes then. My reasoning for the main difference in power is that you're restricting the airflow and remove the restriction when you turn on the fans.
The fans themselves don't really build that much pressure, and you need pressure rather than flow. Flow is needed of course, but without pressure it does nothing.
To 1up this thing you should do RAM intakes!

The T joint for the air manifold is a big flow restriction. You can convert the electric power used to run those engines and compare it to the horse power used by real turbos. That would give you a ratio of the kind of boost you get from the real stuf to begin with.
Those Turdos are clearly exhaust fans from Brad's grow room!

Rounded off cam lobes. Firebirds had flat-tappet cams till 1987 or 1988. Oil companies took all the Zinc-phosphorus additives out if motor oil in like 2008, without warning anybody. So now we need ZDDP additive in our old motors
