I owned a Sony XB33 and my sister has JBL Charge 5...as I've observed, the JBL has sound brighter while my Sony sound more bass-kicked and less vocal. But unfortunately, JBL sounds monophonic while Sony has stereo and I can hear its left and right channel separation especially when I set the Sony music player app to Studio effect. And through the EQ preset I have, it sounds perfect.

How come no mention of the "Priority on sound quality" mode that the Sony XB33 has! It playbacks using the higher quality AAC and LDAC codecs with compatible devices that support them. The XB33 is better than Charge 5 with my iPad Pro and the audio sync (latency) is absolutely superb! Charge 5 seems not as perfect in my opinion, may be cos it only uses SBC. If you watch videos I would definitely go for the Sony. Have to press the Vol + button and then the bluetooth button to flip from the normal SBS codec to the higher quality one. 3 blinks indicates regular and 2 blinks indicates the better sound mode. It does get a bit louder and clearer with my iPad Pro and I am happy. I think for Apple iOS the Sony is better as most Apple devices will automatically support the AAC codec. Whereas most Androids will support LDAC which is supported by Sony XB33 too! For Android, have to go to the Developer section in Settings and choose a different bluetooth codec. Please share experiences as this has made a difference for me. It is hard to find reasonably priced bluetooth speakers that support AAC and LDAC - Sony XB 33 seems rare in that respect and is a winner in my book!

you can get usb audio through the charge 5 in demo mode the problem is its for stores so none of the buttons at the top work (no party boost) and it charges the speakers while its plugged in However jbl can push firmware updates to the device and if the usb c on the charge 5 is a smart in/out usb c they should be able to push a firmware update with a toggle for audio over usb this would also allow you to use a usb c to 3.5 mm adapter where as it sits right now in demo mode the port needs to detect power from another device to wake up where instead they should be able to code it where when you toggle on the usb audio the port wakes up an listens for any incoming audio.

I’ve had the xb33 for two years and I got tired dragging it around the house so I decided I wanted another one for downstairs. I love the Sony but it’s now a €100 more now then what I got it for two yrs ago. So I bought the charge 5 this week. I connected this to my phone and it blew me away. The sony is no match to the JBL. I just turned the mids down by one in equaliser. The sony I had to change everything and it’s still now as clear. The bass is fantastic on both. But the JBL produces more sound. It’s a matter of taste. If you prefer a warmer sound, the Sony would be better. But I prefer a more realistic sound which is why I prefer the JBL. It actually amazed me straight from the box. I just hope the battery is as good as the Sony’s because I’ve heard ppl complain about it and the Sony’s lasts forever

I thought 2 of the speakers working in tandem would allow for more volume but I'm guessing stupid E.U. rules put that idea in the bin because having 2 speakers connected at the same time makes no difference to volume. Idk how better is the charge 5 compared to the charge 4 and I keep hearing nothing but good things from it.

Another important thing that many youtubers miss in speaker comparison, is the sound quality in low volume, like in morning time during a breakfast or a romantic dinner or as a background speaker.
