  • 70 years and it still holds the record for the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic. As it sits in South Philly, we've seen the exterior of the SS United States for years. Ever wonder about itt history and what it looks like on the inside?

I really hope to god she gets saved. The really sad part is the United States (country) is usually so good about preserving maritime history, yet our transAtlantic flagship continues to just sit there looking like... That. As grateful as I am the conservancy has been able to save her this long, I really hope something like having her become a federal monument happens so she can be restored and preserved for future generations.

My family including our cat sailed home on the SS United States from our 3 year military assignment in Germany in 1967. We were guests of then Ambassador to Luxembourg under President Johnson, Patricia Harris, later the Secretary of HHS under President Carter. She and her husband became life-long friends of my parents when my Dad was the Base Commander at Bitburg Air Base. The ocean crossing on this magnificent ship was an adventure beyond our wildest dreams! I still have menus, tickets and various memorabilia from the ship. I hope she can find miracle and live again. If not, I have many wonderful memories of a great trip and a great and gracious lady of the seas and a wonderful icon of the United States of America.🇺🇸 ❤

Same problem as with the Queen Mary. Hasn't had a fresh coat of paint below the waterline for 50 plus years, and the rust would be so bad that the all the outer steel plates need replacing. Old pictures, mementos, stuff that passengers left behind, old uniforms, and other stuff like that. I know that I would stay on her. Give her back her her uniform, and give her a new purpose. Thankfully, the water she's sitting in is part of the reason why she's been is such great shape. She's protected in Philadelphia Harbor on the Delaware River. You take her out to the mouth of the Delaware and she's a vulnerable ship that could end up like the SS Atlantus (which is also wrecked in the mouth of the Delaware River). The SS United States' kind of sister ship, the SS America wrecked off of the Canary Islands when people were trying to save her.
She might be rotting and deteriorating on the outside but structurally, she's 91 or 92% structurally secure.

They have 60,000 dollars just to keep her docked yet have no money to perform any sort of maintenance to ensure her hull stays sound? If anything they are paying to just let the ship rot and then continue every year to talk about all of these plans they have and then they never happen.
