- 70 years and it still holds the record for the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic. As it sits in South Philly, we've seen the exterior of the SS United States for years. Ever wonder about itt history and what it looks like on the inside?

I really hope to god she gets saved. The really sad part is the United States (country) is usually so good about preserving maritime history, yet our transAtlantic flagship continues to just sit there looking like... That. As grateful as I am the conservancy has been able to save her this long, I really hope something like having her become a federal monument happens so she can be restored and preserved for future generations.
My family sailed on this ship to Germany in 1960. I was 20 and loved this ship and everything about it. Those were the days of true elegance. I hope this treaßure can be made in to a useful and proud location for people to enjoy.
Martha, amazing that you had the chance to ride on this magnificent ship. You should watch Jake Williams' new video about this beauty: czcams.com/video/EuBKewWTag0/video.html
Mine did too in I think 1965? My sister was really little.
My family including our cat sailed home on the SS United States from our 3 year military assignment in Germany in 1967. We were guests of then Ambassador to Luxembourg under President Johnson, Patricia Harris, later the Secretary of HHS under President Carter. She and her husband became life-long friends of my parents when my Dad was the Base Commander at Bitburg Air Base. The ocean crossing on this magnificent ship was an adventure beyond our wildest dreams! I still have menus, tickets and various memorabilia from the ship. I hope she can find miracle and live again. If not, I have many wonderful memories of a great trip and a great and gracious lady of the seas and a wonderful icon of the United States of America.🇺🇸 ❤
I have a crystal sphere from one of the chandeliers that were in the ballroom. I treasure it.
I sailed on her in the 1950’s. I still have my passenger list. I was 10 years old.
Deserves a restoration.
Art Deco interiors? Clearly the reporter needs to do his homework. It was American Modern interiors typical of the 1950's, the decade she was designed and built, not the 1930's typical of Art Deco.
This design is my favorite in all Ocean liners fleet, love it👏🏻
Same problem as with the Queen Mary. Hasn't had a fresh coat of paint below the waterline for 50 plus years, and the rust would be so bad that the all the outer steel plates need replacing. And if putting her in dry dock and giving it a fresh coat of paint is cost prohibitive what chance is there of giving her a new hull?
The queen mary looks way better than this sht
The Conservancy that is taking care of her has been getting boat loads of money for the past decades and they are criminally negligent in maintaining her.
@@dutchymonThey are spending all that money just paying the rent for the dock, there’s nothing left to do any real maintenance. But, to be fair, he hulk is sound; she’s not leaking anywhere yet. The fresh water is really helping her
Queen Mary’s hull is sound below the waterline. She’s had proper cathodic protection. She could use a dry docking, but that’s not going to be cheap or easy.
Sad,sad,sad...unbelievable ship...cant be lost..all the money this country gives away and we cant get this done.....it should be in nyc as a hotel,shops....that would be beautiful...
So they have spent almost $30 million in docking fees since 1992? They could have restored it for that amount. 🤦♂️
MAN 50 SOME ODD YEARS AGO I SEEN THIS SHIP IN NEW PORT NEWS HAMPTON VERGINA. COOL.
What a magnificent piece of history to just watch it rust away. Probably a likely sad reality that it's real value is only in its weight for scrap metal.
Best ship in United States its beautiful
SS USA should belong in the Washington DC's Smithsonian Museum, but docking at the Washington DC's Harbor as a Hotel Museum Ship!
I thought it was going to get turned into a casino.
...and hotel
18 Million Dollars someone has been paid just to dock this ship.
Thats what im saying, and where are they getting the money?
sad to see her sitting like that hope she gets saved soon
El transatlántico united estates deberian renovarlo y aser viejes seria todo un exito ,para todos los que gustan de los viajes clasicos
I say put it on land and build a museum around it with a roof covering the ship
It's been dormant for 54 years. 25 in philly at the time of this doc. Time to scrap it yesterday.
I’d have to disagree with you on that, yes she is old and unused, but she still is our country’s flag ship. In my eyes that’s like saying we should tear down the Statue of Liberty
I think that it would be great of she was turned into a floating hotel and restaurant. Also have a spot where her history is provided. Old pictures, mementos, stuff that passengers left behind, old uniforms, and other stuff like that. I know that I would stay on her. Give her back her her uniform, and give her a new purpose. People like these types of things now. Anyone who is a maritime history buff would love something like this. I really do hope that she can be saved. She deserves nothing less. Good luck to them.
Its to late...ALL of her interior including the bridge etc has been Torn OUT...so its just a rusting hull now
@@justaname1862That just makes it an even blanker canvas to be turned into a restaurant/hotel. The problem is money
@@sirboomsalot4902 But it's Lost ALL of its HISTORY and Nostalgia wich is really it's draw card...like the Queen Mary wich has 90% of its original fittings etc is it's draw card...otherwise it's just an Old ship hull...I absolutely LOVE History and Nostalgia...it's only real chance is if it was fitted out EXACTLY the same way it was on her Last Voyage
@@user-fx2sh6pk9uShe would be fairly easy to refurbish considering her modernist interior which is still fairly popular today.
The ship needs a poet like Oliver Wendell Holmes, who saved Old Ironsides.
I am not worthy, but here is a bit of my effort: Needs more verses, though
Oh, tear her tattered ensign down
Long has it waved at sea
And many people have danced aboard
The US Queen of the Sea
Her decks once filled with society
Beneath the clouds so high
And many passengers have danced to see
The celebrities on riding high
She absolutely MUST be saved
I hope she gets saved!
Why dont they speak with the city to make a pier park ( or even just a permanent spot ) where people can walk and shop and then go on board- maybe a few restaurants inside or a clubroom - with the new overpass park in philly it would be a good opportunity.
Its crazy how philly has a potential future attraction but cant even see it.
By far the largest ocean liner built by the United States
Also the fastest
Grandfather old rules for these ships so they can sail under the old rules.
I know that ship
Steve and the other character need to set up fundraiser to save the Big U.
Iowa class engines in this ship
Actually more powerful. These engines ran out 1000psi
Princess lines should just buy it
I hope that at some point a rich ceo from Tesla/Apple/Microsoft or another big company will come up with the idea of putting a lot of money into the ship so that it can sail across the Atlantic again. With enough money and people, the seemingly impossible becomes possible. :-)
As much as I don’t like thinking it, I believe the end is here for this famous ship. Kind of like having to put the family dog down at the end of its long loving life. Nobody wants to do it but somebody has to. 😢
What actually is happening with RXR Reality ? Some of the comments sounds like this arrangement has stalled .Anyone know .
Nothing has happened. Nothing is going to happen.
Time to sink it.
@@rcpsammy7186 sure just put one of the greatest ships at the bottom of the ocean great solution!
@@rcpsammy7186 That or scrap her. It's time to call it a day with this ship.
I wish i could go on her..
I’m heard they only pay 800 a month for the slip …
I'd rather see this ship go to a scrap yard then see the Fate that is sister ship had to go through before it just rotted away on some beach the history of these two ships were astounding they served this country well. Unfortunately for SS America had some bad owners which sealed her fate on some Beach unfortunately.
EVERYONE FLOCK LIKE A PACK OF GEESETO THE COURTHOUSE IN PHILADELPHIA ON TUESDAY JANUARY 16TH 8AM😢😢😮
60K a Month?
And I though NYC rents were expensive lol. How can they ever get ahead? Think of what $60,000 a month in repairs would do that ship! This is just to keep her docked!
Thankfully, the water she's sitting in is part of the reason why she's been is such great shape. She's protected in Philadelphia Harbor on the Delaware River. You take her out to the mouth of the Delaware and she's a vulnerable ship that could end up like the SS Atlantus (which is also wrecked in the mouth of the Delaware River). The SS United States' kind of sister ship, the SS America wrecked off of the Canary Islands when people were trying to save her.
She might be rotting and deteriorating on the outside but structurally, she's 91 or 92% structurally secure.
@@cliff9685 they keep relying on a single personal donor to give them money to keep it there when they don't have enough.
Dreamers, all.
Time to sink it as a reef.
So sad that interior gutted way back when?
March 11, 2024
I enquired to Ukraine if Mariupol, Ukraine would be able to re-paint the ship if she is towed to there.
It should have been taken care of since the day it was retired. It has now reached a point of no return and will likely turn into swiss cheese in several years.
Nah, she’s still incredibly structurally sound. All the rust is simply cosmetic. She has no leaking at all.
Sad, Not sure this is going to be able to be saved.
All of this talk about hopes and dreams isn't going to save it. And one day her hull is going to rust through and she will sink in the port she has been left to rot in basically.
They have 60,000 dollars just to keep her docked yet have no money to perform any sort of maintenance to ensure her hull stays sound? If anything they are paying to just let the ship rot and then continue every year to talk about all of these plans they have and then they never happen.
Sad to say but she is turning into Titanic. A ship that will soon be lost to the tests of time.
Her hull isn’t going to rust through for quite a few dacades. She’s in fresh water; for comparison, the USS Olympia, within walking distance just up the river, has been in the water since 1945 and she’s just started to spring leaks in the last couple years
I feel like it's too far gone. Its completely stripped and rotting. If it was the last ocean liner, I would understand, but at this point, I feel like the ocean liner community should just invest in the Queen Mary instead
Queen Mary has the city to Long Beach, and she just completed a huge restoration effort. And it’s not too far gone; her hull is sound (she’s in way better shape than SS Great Britain was at least). The problem is money.
If I was someone like Bill Gates or Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, I'd offer up the money to save this ship one way or another so that it ends up being of some use and not just waiting for scrapping.
Scrap it I’m surprised the EPA hasn’t drop the hammer for all the rust and lead paint dropping in the water.
So...we know how much it costs to keep there
But how much money would it cost to even turn into a museum...if people know...maybe they would be interested
Bezos, Gates…for fuxache …
Oprah, Nina Simone.... Tina Turner.... Vita Boheme.... I too can say random names ominously.
Elon Musk needs to buy her and make her return to the original glory.
If the Federal government diverted funds from the three hundred or so million dollars donated to Israel, each year projects like the refurbishment of this grand old lady, S.S United States would be possible.
I think the problem is that she is too far gone. Hull in bad shape and interior is pretty much gutted out.
She was inspected about 5 years ago and they found the hull to be sound. Despite outward appearances, the bones of the ship are very solid.
my fahter was one of the engineers and i tryed to save the ship with military personnel specifically the coast guard and navy with McNamaran i contacted George bush who was the director of the CIA who personal said to me that "I DONT GIVE A FUUK about your ship" what makes the ship great is its speed which actually is 42 knots not 38 thats an average for the crossing the reason she is so fast is her engines room 250 thousand horse! in California our PGE plant has 140 thousand horse the ship is twice the size of an average electric company! and its mobile! all lost for $1 million paid in CASH! at marid by hadley! because he thought he would lose the ship which was true i existed! for 1 million dollars our country lost an electric company! the ship was taken to turkey were it was destroyed looted and its hull was bent. now a total lost cause!
MY PARENTS SAILED ON THE SS UNITED STATES FROM NEW YORK TO BREMIN GERMANY IN JULY 1958 . SHE WAS FAST SHE HIT 36 KNOTS 2 UNDER THE RECORD. TICKETS ON THIS SHIP WERE EXPENSIVE. MY PARENTS WERE UPGRADED FROM SECOND CLASS TO FIRST CLASS THE SECOND DAY THEY WERE ON BOARD BECAUSE OF A TRANSFORMER ISSUE .
THE GRAND DINNING ROOM WAS AMAZING AND SO WAS THE BALL ROOM.
SPECIAL CHINA DISHES WERE MADE FOR EACH TRIP. ORIGINAL CHINA DISHES FROM THE SHIP ARE WORTH A FORTUNE AT AUCTION HOUSES. I IS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE THAT THE US FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOESNT FIT THE BILL TO REFIT HER TO A MARITIME HISTORY MUSEUM.
The government sent all our money to China for "global warming" indoctrination and brainwashing.
Let her go. Like trying to keep an old relative on life support. The allusion is something grand. She lived her life. Let it pass.
Just scrap it
Sadly...this old shell should just be scrapped...all of its Historical interior has been gutted...so its just a rusting shell....no historical value really...unlike the Queen Mary wich has its interior still intact
The SS United States is America’s history And the queen Mary is not. It’s ironic and said that the United States preserved the Queen Mary but not its own history the United States
The reason why it was the interior was gutted was asbestos. It was a fireproof ship.
Running out of money going to be evicted.
Not much in the way of history here, other than speed. The ship was gutted and all the quality furnishings long gone. I do not see SS United States being worth restoring.
Why can’t it be turned back into a cruise liner?
“Democrats the answer is democrats”
Not cost effective. Wish it wasn't so.
It was never a cruise liner. It was an ocean liner. There’s a difference. But I agree with you. Put her back into some sort of service.
Scrap it
Too bad, it has outlived its usefulness. 😮 Maybe it should be scrapped. 😢
Elon or Jeff need to finance the restoration of this amazing ship
Scrap it
