No issues with my locks, which are as old as yours. I mostly keep them on top of my head and try to find the best spot to balance the weight.

i was just about to suggest that. once my locs get long enough for beehive type wraps, ill leave it balanced on my head most of the time , i have tams that keep my dreads on the top of my head because of the brim and they make life very easy🙏🏽🙏🏽

Oh my goodness YES! I finally have achieved the dreads of my dreams after a 19 year journey and now i have a pain in the neck. 😩
I had the amazing thought of possibly strengthening my neck and google took me to your post first off.
I have trimmed and layered my dreads over the years but i really dont want to cut them again.
Im looking for inspiration to continue the lateral journey however I have a REAL pain in the neck!
What did you decide to do?
I will read through the comments

Gentle stretching in the morning will strengthen your neck muscles. Also if you wear a top bun it will take weight of your neck, as wearing in a pony tail pulls neck back. Hope this helps.

You will not cut them....when I start my locks the goal size was shoulder leight....now they are almost belly leight and I still don t have the heart to cut them short...they are my babies🤣 but my neck dosen't hurt, they are thinner then youurs,I think that if my neck start to hurt I will start to trim, bit by bit, untill the pain goes away 😁

I've been debating cutting mine for this reason too .
    My neck hurts so much,
I think I would have been fine with it by just stretching in the morning, however I was in a car wreck a few weeks ago that really jared my spine and I'm thinking about getting rid of the weight to allow my neck to heal .

I cutted my locks and that was one of the reasons. Other reasons were: I have always to plan when I have to wash them and when not, there were heavy like you said, I do a lot of sport but I couldnt wash them everytime after sport, because they take the whole day to dry completelly, I love dreads, but I hated the problems they are coming with. I started to grow my hair from beginning and I let them grow long, but this time I braid them if I want a special look, it also looks very cool when I have twenty braids on my head and it is a lot comfortable then dreads.

The weight is to strengthen the tension is a language of the body communicating. Once I started working my neck with yoga everything aligned.

My locks are to my waist and are 10 years old...I just recently started having neck pain on one side. Sleeping cap helps, stretching helps too but ultimately I am going to have to trim them back...at least to a point where they don't hurt my neck. Peace, Light and Love to You and everyone that You know....

First offf Big ups to achieving ten years of locship! Trimming does help, I found that cutting them lightly over a long time better than trimming all at once.

I don't have neck pain. I never had any neck pain. You've got to be able to move your head freely though, that's one thing that's for certain. Would be a shame to cut them but do what feels right and natural. The reason will always be freedom.

Have to build your neck muscles up. You can put books on your forehead and lay and the head of the bed and go up and down for reps.

Don't cut them. Try wearing them in a bun on top or in a tam.
