    I had a Zafira turbo diesel run away on me once, when the turbo oil seals failed... it was indeed quite frightening at first but I was able to drop it in to top gear, drop the clutch and stand hard on the brakes, which killed it. Then there was just the matter of waiting 2 hours to recover me from just outside Basingstoke. Fortunately it was a company car, and was soon fixed, and eventually racked up 250k miles before being sold!

      @@ryanwilliams6526 I agree - they can be a real pain if they get clogged. The Italian tune-up method works well, as it allows the DPF to heat up and properly burn off all the crap. @aaaabababa Před rokem +7

      @@ryanwilliams6526 honestly, no, dpf's are waaaaaay less of a pain in the ass than EGR Systems, this comes from someone who exclusively works on diesels, we rarely get clogged DPF's, but we see clogged intakes and EGR systems all the time.

    • @ryanwilliams6526
      @ryanwilliams6526 Před rokem +2

      @@aaaabababa That's a fair point.
      It's just that, in my experience, EGR valves aren't usually too bad of a job to clean or replace when they become clogged, but DPFs are a lot bigger of a job.
      Also, it means that you can't really have a diesel if you do short journeys anymore, as it will certainly get clogged.
      I fail to see the environmental benefits of DPFs too, since all they do is collect up the harmful particles, and then waste tons of diesel getting the engine hot, just to release them all straight into the environment anyway.

    Having owned Diesels for year's the best thing for them is a good blowout on the Motorway and the worst thing you can do is short runs especially in winter.

    You shaking the Berlingo to mix the magic juice with the diesel reminded me of an anecdote I once heard when working for major oil company, then one of The Seven Sisters. They'd had a substantial order for a particular blend of oil, but the blending machine was out of order. So they put the ingredients in the right quantities in a tank truck and drove it a few times round the refinery to blend it, then delivered it to the customer. I can not guarantee that it was a true story, but I could well imagine that it was.

      Another anecdote, same oil company as above, but no longer related to this video: They once built a refinery that had one single access road, somewhere in Greece. With a railway bridge over the access road. All went well until the first tanker came to pick up its load. But it would not fit under the railway bridge. So they had to dig out the road under the railway bridge before they could ship products from the refinery.

    So a scary diesel runaway redline from death did the trick!
    What I suggest whilst you have the injector cleaner in, is to the drive Bella like you stole her, really redline the engine and get those revs up, because diesel is notorious for producing particulates
    Given the age of Bella, it's likely that carbon build up in the EGR, plus injectors being a little clogged too that the engine was starved of fuel and air meaning it was missing
    The injector cleaner will clean the injectors and also the combustion chambers too, you may experience additional black smoke whilst that is occurring, I would perform an additional EGR cleaning after the injector cleaning has occurred, to remove any additional deposits that may come from the combustion chambers
    But I'm glad Bella is better than ever, YAY FOR BELLA!! ❤

    Never used egr cleaner but I have used injector cleaner on a 1994 tractor that was blowing black smoke and was hard starting. It worked so well that I did not change the injectors and since then put some in my four year old Mitsubishi L200 (which did not blow smoke) but it improved the running so much that I use it every ten tanks or so, the engine runs smoother and quieter using it, I have since used it on a chinese generator set that was blowing black smoke from new and it stopped that as well. So yes injector cleaner works.

When I removed the EGR oily crud was 5mm thick all round, I cleaned it out by hand as the intake spray cleaner barely touched it but realised the turbo and intake valves were still going to be coated. Using tank additive does help give smother running and better economy.

    You should always build your revs in a diesel, changing to fourth gear at 25 mph is your problem, especially with an already sooty intake. Take all the intake off as well as the egr valve & give it a good decoke as it'll just keep coming back

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  Před rokem +1

      A diesel is meant to lug. These don't really like going beyond 3000rpm anyway. If they didn't think they should be pulling at 1500rpm, they could quite easily prevent them from doing so.

    • @zubeystinzen540
      @zubeystinzen540 Před rokem

      @@HubNut yes I fully agree but this concept is challenged on your diesel engine because of the add on of the egr & also the dpf.
      These anti breathing systems choke a diesel engine & as such you have to find it's happy spot in its power band. Older diesel engines without a turbo are slow but have loads of torque, newer diesels with turbo's still have the torque but you have to be in the rev band for the turbo to operate, add the egr to the equation & you're using second hand dirty air that again operates at a certain rev band. Now,put the dpf on you need to operate at a higher rev band to generate the heat so the regen can perform.
      Constant driving at low revs is the best for mpg but you have to attain the speed first as you put undue stress on the cranks.
      Put all this with the way they build modern engines well it's a recipe for failure, especially with heat pressed cranks.
      They stopped making decent diesels in the late 90s IMHO 👍

    What I found on an 02 belingo van (2 litre hdi), I had some time ago, was that the cheap diesel sold at supermarkets was extremely bad for the engine. Coked it up something awful. So I started using the 'supreme' diesel at other outlets. Yes, it's more expensive, but in the long run, the engine runs so much better and fuel consumption becomes so much better too. The 'supreme' diesel has cleaners in it. I recently bought an mpv similar in year to this vid. Now I alternate between adding a cleaner into the tank when I fill up and using the most expensive diesel at the pump (not at a supermarket). The car goes like a rocket. So the moral to this story is....... Fuel consumption is between 57 and 65 mpg locally. Not bad for an old car. And it's a 2 litre HDI.

    Some advice I found when I had my first Fiat Multipla diesel in 2002 was to drive the car like a petrol. Use plenty of revs setting off and always use the engine quite hard by making sure it revs. This beds the engine in better, protects the dual mass flywheel and does a better joke of keeping the EGR clear. So many people drive a diesel like a tractor, then complain when they have problems related with judder and poor breathing.

    Oh yes. And I changed the oil every 3 thousand miles. That keeps the turbo clean too. Also, when stopping the engine at the end of a journey, leave it on tick-over for 10 seconds, before switching off. This allows oil to get to the turbo. If the engine is switched off straight away, the turbo bearing, which is still spinning, is doing so dry, as no oil is being pumped round. This will defo shorten its life.

    I have done this often with my Ford 2.0 tdci. When the EGR and Turbo is a bit dirty it could help.. The most important thing for using of that stuff is, the engine must me warm and do not arise 200 rp/m when using that stuff. After a while, stop the engine for 15-20 minutes and after that take your car for a 'test run'.

    I removed the EGR cooler and whole EGR system just a couple of days ago, because I had to do it to get access for changing the thermostat and water pump om my BMW.
    Took the opportunity to clean them and the intake pretty thoroughly with a vacuum cleaner and scraper tool. Didnt really make a difference that I could tell though, I think it wasnt all that bad beforehand, just a millimeter of carbon buildup along the edges or so. I guess some regular high speed autobahn driving and relatively low milage of the car was to my benefit.

    Great result !, very few people understand that common rail diesels of this era (DPF & EGR) need to be worked very very hard for really long periods if you want them to stay healthy, I have had similar results spending an hour on the motorway in third gear at 3000 rpm, conversely pootling around for months on end usually causes big problems. Great that the cleaner worked though.

    I've always done that with a few revs held on the engine, it stops that awful bogging down noise and it takes the cleaner through the system, rather than letting it sit as yours did.

    Hi guys. I had a citroen guy recommend Cataclean8 for my c4 after it started throwing up faults for egr, lambda sensors etc. Worked miracles, seriously, both the fuel line in to the exhaust, including the combustion Chambers. Pricy at £18. Its a tank additive. But saved me from having to replace my egr, lambda sensors and catalytic converter! They do a petrol and diesel version, and it's the best of anything I have tried.

    Well done! I wish I'd had somebody suggest spraying this Lucas stuff into the EGR of my 2002 C5 2.2 Hdi Exclusive 136 about 10 years ago when "Sarkozy's Revenge", as I began to call him, started misbehaving and limiting himself to barely 3000rpm (and that was the least of my problems; don't mention the dual-mass flywheel failing, been there, got the T-shirt; and his oil incontinence all over the starter motor from the turbo...) I'm sure he would at least have stopped going into limp-home mode, which was positively embarrassing on a motorway or dual carriageway with a modest incline... and then he was a right bu**er, he would get up to over 80mph (130 Km/h) with gravity assistance on the down side beyond the crest of the hill...

    I feel your pain. I have an Alfa Romeo 159 2.0JTDM with an EGR valve that's stuck open (NO power below 2000rpm!). On these cars with the 1.9 engine, the EGR valve sits right at the top and takes about 3 minutes to remove. In my 2.0JTDM engine, it is literally three quarters of the way down the back of the engine, with a tiny gap that even a new born baby's hand could not fit in. It's just impossible. I can't even see how a garage could get to it. Way to go Fiat/GM..... place a valve known to get clogged up needing regular cleaning in the most inaccessible place in the engine bay!

      I suspect some of the issue is where the EGR meets the intake - all manner of goop in that area.

    • @Xyleksoll
      @Xyleksoll Před rokem

      The problem with the EGR on diesels is that the soot coming from the exhaust is mixed with the fine oil mist coming up the intake. This oil usually comes from the PCV - diesels have a lot of blowby that is returned in the intake airstream. Some have oil separators in the PCV, some don’t. Also, turbo seals might leak. Anyway, the oil mixed with soot makes for a nasty sludge that gets deposited on the EGR and in the intake.

    Back when I was a child, my parents used to have a late 70s VW Golf Diesel. The poor thing suffered from a lot of issues during its life; one of them was we frequently had some really bad runaways. The first one occurred on our way home from a trip to Luxemburg. Sitting in the back, I was listening to my little portable radio and suddenly, as my father wanted to change gears, the enigine started screaming and stinking very badly. Turning off the key eventually stopped the engine after antoher 5 very long seconds... But, I really was very scared; my heart beated the same RPM as the engine I geuss. :-) After we (and the poor engine) recovered a bit, my father restarted the engine, but as soon as it started, it imediately went to full blast again, stopping after 5 seconds when turned off. So, it took us a few more tries to get the engine back to normal, so we could continue our trip. Anyway, as you told us about the runaway of your Berlingo, I seemed to be able to feel exactly the same as you did. :-) Glad to hear your Berlingo is fixed, that is of course the most important of this all.

      @@HubNut Yep, they don't put them in the easiest of places to get to and replace!
      I had a bit of a drama with my focus 2.0 duratec oddly it has an EGR, even though it's a petrol engine.
      I cleaned mine with a similar aerosol cleaner and it worked, for several hundred miles...
      Then clogged again, I just unplugged it, problem solved, it will actually run just fine as long as it is closed, obviously it throws up an engine light, oddly it didn't when the EGR was actually faulty and plugged in!
      In the end a rather fussy MOT tester didn't approve of my unplugging EGR solution, several others previously didn't bat an eyelid at my fix, in fact they mostly agreed it probably runs better without it and my emissions were always well within tolerance.
      So I had to replace it, just getting to it is a major pain and full on 'open heart surgery'.
      Once you get access you have to unplumb the coolant, as mine is tied into the coolant temp.
      Of the 3 bolts that good it on, 1 is quite easily undone, the next is a world of hassle to undo and the final one underneath, requires the fingers of an orangutan, double jointed ones at that and the dexterity of a Romanian pickpocket, it also requires the holy grail of sockets as every one I.have is just a fraction too long, a spanner is no good, a ring spanner impossible, luckily I found a socket, literally in the road, so low profile it only just fits, it still fouls the thermostat housing but at a slight angle you can get just enough purchase on it to very slowly undo it without rounding it off.
      You can only turn it about 5⁰ before you have to relocate the socket which is on a flexible joint, a small extention, another flexible joint and a longer extention on to the socket wrench!
      So to turn it one full turn takes around 70 repetitions of the above, it takes lots of swearing, scuffed knuckles and sweat 😓
      Replacement is just the good old reversal procedure process...😲😁
      I managed the seemingly impossible, next time it fails, I will just delete it, apparantly there is a blanking plate, I guess the EGR just stays plugged in but not attached to the engine for the ECU to 'think' it's still working? 😳😁
      I found 2 used EGR gaskets in and around where I took the old one off, so counting the one that was on it and the one I just put on, that's 4 EGR replacements in 130k miles but probably 20k of those miles were with the 3rd one on but faulty and I just unplugged it, so expect about 27k miles per EGR, on my car anyway.
