Don't overlook Adam Rupp here. He was adding another tenor voice. There are several where he sings, anthey are some of their best arrangements (and yes, Adam does some of the arrangements).

Yuri ! So good to see you back with Home Free. We told ya this was a special one ! Even Adam the beatboxer was singing the whole way. Chance might get a better look from you from now on...this was his baby so to speak. He thought of this song (not sure who arranged it, but it might be Tim foust, but I could be wrong) but Chance scripted this & directed it, and helped with the editing too I believe. He has directed a few other videos too....don't sleep on Chance and his talent....he's a very valuable asset to Home Free & I am so glad he joined them after Chris Rupp (the beatboxers brother) left in May of 2016 to pursue a solo career.

Thank you for bringing this up! I think Chance is sometimes overlooked. After he joined Home Free, Tim was able to sing a lot more often and Chance has brought a whole other dimension to them because of it. His smoky voice, musical brilliance and bass are so easy to miss when you have 3 other singers with so much talent. ^i^

I grew up listening to CSN & had their album with this song Helplessly Hoping (full of alliteration). Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. But I must say since I discovered Home Free they more than do justice to all the songs they cover. And this song is perfection to me with the 5 part harmonies. I can't say enough about how great these guys are & humble while still staying respectful to the original song.

Nothing "happens" in the video, yet you can't take your eyes off it - it's pure magic. Darren Rust, Home Free's producer on most of their songs, never ceases to amaze me. Tim does a long sustain that lasts until just before Chance comes in on the 2nd chorus.
"And Choking [short breath] On Hello." (last verse)
He holds that note until joining Chance at the last line of the chorus. There is a short breath just before...
"They are For Each Other." --deep bass, 4th line of chorus.
That is some mighty polished breath control.
Nice reaction. Talk as much as you want, I read all of the comments. 😉

You did such a great job analysing the lyrics. This is a song in which the lyrics are constructed with alliteration and these songs don't translate very well, which is why you probably never heard it before. (The first verse of Let It Be by the Beatles is another good example of this technique.) Home Free did such a great job with this song with the way the put their own spin on it.

I'm shocked and saddened that you've never heard of Crosby, Stills & Young or Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The folk rock group has been hugely influential in the music business and political activism world for over 50 years. Their last tour as CSNY was 2006 and as CSN, 2015 Please look into their music. They've produced a dozen albums as a group and many many more songs as single or duo performers. Look up the group and the singular performers; David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young. You'll hear some of the greatest music that helped influence a whole generation.

Crosby, Still & Nash were the first American "super group". (Like Blind Faith was the first British super group.) All 3 came from very big bands. They added Neil Young for the second album. CS&N (then CSN&Y) OWNED the world rock charts for years in the 70's. Their music, as you can tell, is still being sung today 50 years later.

I believe this song was written by Stephen Stills about the on again/off again relationship he had with Judy Collins. They had a child together - hence the "three together" part of the chorus. Judy was a notable singer herself - Farewell to Tarwathie from the Colours of the Day album is one my absolute all time favorites. Such a pure voice. Stephen Stills was a brilliant songwriter, but the Crosby Stills Nash version of this song is nothing like as drop dead gorgeous as this Home Free version.

The harlequin was a typical character in _Commedia dell'arte_ (Italian theatrical form), of lowly rank, often shown with a lute, who sometimes pursued ladies above his class. Or in this case, Stephen Stills at a time he was a lowly session musician, after the breakup of his first band Buffalo Springfield and before CSN, pursuing mega folk star Judy Collins....

I suspect the 1-4 has a different meaning; The couple is alone together and they are hoping that a baby (the third person) will save the relationship. I believe the whole song is about wondering if a baby is coming and if the baby will invigorate them. Listen to the song again with this idea in mind. It works.

Harlequin - A mute character in traditional pantomime, typically masked and dressed in a diamond-patterned costume. This word is derived from Late 16th century from obsolete French, from earlier Herlequin (or Hellequin), the name of the leader of a legendary troop of demon horsemen; perhaps ultimately related to Old English Herla cyning ‘King Herla’, a mythical figure sometimes identified with Woden.

My understanding of the phrase "harlequin hovers" is that it means either "hidden" or "forbidden" and think either of those meanings give a complete understanding of the soleful, deep meaning behind the darkness of this beautiful work of art!
Another meaning just of "harlequin" ~ By the early 17th century, Harlequin had become a faithful valet, patient, credulous, and amorous. This last quality often led him into difficulties from which he managed to extricate himself by cleverness and irrepressible high spirits. He was amoral without being vicious, and, unlike his fellow commedia servants, he did not hold a grudge or seek revenge against those who tricked or cheated him.

The bass was Tim on that part, Chance dipped down a little but didn't go into the full bass range I believe

This was classic Crosby, Stills and Nash- also worth reacting to! Brilliant songwriting by the great Stephen Stills. Check it out! Thoroughly enjoyed your comments- new sub!!!!!!

Three together refers to the belief that two people who are in love create a "third" person who is the sum of them both.

There is something impossibly lonesome about this song.
The way I interpret this song, it's a man who has lost his wife or lover. He's lost in the sorrow that comes after.

you could also read it as "too alone" as in an excess of loneliness.

I interpret 'three together' as they are two alone plus one person combined; a couple, but also two individuals

Listen to their live performance of this song, and others, and you'll see what difference a studio with finely tuned EQs, autotune and other tech makes.. Not to take away from their raw talent but their videos are all hi-tech productions..
