Scuba Tank DECONTAMINATION Process

- In this short tutorial Nick Rinn shows the process of decontaminating a scuba tank.
The reasons a tank can get contaminated are from a compressor that has malfunctioned and mistakenly filled a tank with bad air, a tank somehow getting water in it and created rust, etc... This video shows the process that will decontaminate the pits, rust, or bad smell from the tank.
It is not recommended to do this yourself, it is recommended to take your tank to a local dive shop and or have a dive professional such as Nick Rinn give you advice and how to go about it.
Please remember that the following organizations are available to you or someone you know who might be in need of someone to talk too. Thanks

Although I'm not a diver, I do enjoy learning new things that you bring to the table. Keep adding new things and keep taking us on the adventures with you and friends. Thank you from Sc.
Thanks, will do!
I worked in a dive shop in Seattle. I use to inspect and clean the tanks, help with the classes and run the rest of the dive shop. As a diver myself, I am happy you showed a important part of diving. Thank you Nick. I love watching your videos. ❤
Thank you for watching Ladyhawk!
Thank You Nick, I am enjoying you taking us in your adventures and sharing your knowledge. You and the squad are awesome💜
Thanks so much!
Very interesting to see a service done on the tanks and that place needs a drain for sure as slipping and sliding to come. Cheers Nick
Thanks 👍
awesome video thanks for the content iv never thought about having to clean the inside of a tank like that
Thanks for watching! What state are you in?

Great real time explanation. Thank you.
You are welcome!
Keep doing wat u love to do. We all enjoy them. 💜
Nice to see you again Mr. Jack of all trades 😊😊 I'm sure you'll get a lot of call who would want to learn more and get certified. Merry Christmas to you and your family 👪 ❤️ ♥️
Thanks for watching!
I never realized all that went into “diving!” This was very informative and I won’t be watching diving in the same way again. Thank you Nick. 🙏❤️🤗
Glad you enjoyed it!
I never would have thought Simple Green would be used for cleaning out a scuba tank. 🤔 Cool!
Right?!
Interesting.. specifically using Simple Green.
Really interesting Nick. My 2 brothers were divers, one an certified diving instructor and one certified. Tommy the instructor has passed but use to ice dive and was in part of recovery team for drowning victims in Cook County IL. Thank you for sharing part of what I didn’t know about him. ❤️🐠
Merry Christmas I hope in 2023 can comeback the AWP crew together and continue with the job that really well made.
I don’t know anything about air tanks but this was interesting. Good to see you ❤️
I'm not a diver but I find these kinds of videos fascinating.
I am sure you have seen and heard of lots of bad experiences with minimally trained divers. The one and ONLY time I tried it, already worried about my ears that hurt when I would dive to the bottom of a pool (I was a very competitive swimmer in my home town). I was a newly wed teenager at the time, in the early 1970s. When a friend organized a group to dive at a quarry in Maryland I went along to try. He helped me with the tank and once in the water I could not get any air! Came up and told him that. He replied "You are not breathing hard enough." The second time I came up to say no, I was breathing hard and still no air. He finally looked at the tank and said "Oh, it's empty." After that, I found no interest in trying again, even with a tank that had air. Luckily I recognized that this was not a safe situation and declined any further attempt. You have special skills, both professionally and personally. Your passion and great communication skills comes through loud and clear. Also thrilled to see you all on the recent fabulous Christmas videos. And again, I am always impressed when men show me how to cook because it is definitely NOT my thing. Just let me clean your fridge and wash your dishes! Something that I used to do all the time in the past when I visited friends and family. Now housebound, watching you meticulously clean your tank vicariously met my need for cleaning.
That would be scary not being able to breath! I’m glad you survived that experience! Thanks for watching!
I don't scuba dive but it was still interesting to see all the steps needed to clean the tank.
Good to learn about the behind the scenes things to be able to perform safe diving.
I am not a diver, but I found this to be fun and informative. Things you bring up is something I never would have thought about. I am enjoying your channel.
Thank you!
Very interesting Nick. I never knew you had to clean out oxygen tanks. Be safe and have a blessed day.
I don't five but I've watched you and others over the years since I was fascinated by ocean life as a kid. It never occurred to me a tank might become contaminated. I learned something today.
Never dove, but interesting new thing to learn never the less. Thanks! 😊 🇧🇻
Great video, never thought about tanks needing to be cleaned out .
I enjoy your videos.
Thanks!
Nick great information for those scuba dive....I can't wait until you guys get back to work 👍
Hi @Nick Rinn! Thank you for sharing this process with us. I never even knew that you had to clean the tanks. That's quite the cool setup you've got going on over there. I always love learning new things! 👍❤️
Glad it was helpful!

Just like to ad. The walve do be taken apart and cleand to. Maby shange teflon and Oring seels. Thay tend to be wear out. And if use hot wather as a one minut rinse in the end on the tank. You blow the moist out alot faster.
😉 (Have been working as a proffesional tec, in a dive shop for more then 15 years.) 🤭
I don't dive, but this was interesting to watch. Thanks, Nick
Nick, really enjoy listening to you - you have a great presentation style. Keep those videos coming!!
Thanks, will do!
Great video. Very informative
Thanks Nick I always wondered how they cleaned those!.Great Video!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year's!!!🤶 🎅⛄️🎄
Same to you!
Great video Nick. It's nice being able to watch this demonstration on you teaching us so we can better understand what it takes of the importance to cleaning the air tank. Thanks for sharing, I learned something new😉Becca from TN
Glad it was helpful!
So cool! I didnt even know this was a thing, and my dad is a diver.🤔🧡
have you ever considered doing a video showing some of the dangers of this type of equipment? I'm not experienced but for instance taking a old tank and break the valve off to simulate getting dropped or other scenarios.
I haven’t but that’s a great idea! Thank you!
@@Nicgyver no problem i just always think of that one because i had an accident once with an oxygen cutting tank getting knocked over broke the valve off and spun and rocketed thru a metal garage wall and was sitting about 100ft away nobody was injured but always think about it anytime i deal with pressurized tanks.
Well I be dipped in simple green! Thanks for the hot tips Sarge! Keep um coming!!!
You bet dude man!
Cool video nick. I learn new things everyday 👍
Great to see you and appreciate you sharing the process.
It's worth the cost and effort to get it done right plus certify the tank. Safety first.
Happy holidays to you and yours. Loved the video with Josh seeing all of you together and serving your chili you provided the recipe for.
Take care and stay warm
Thank you, thanks for watching our videos!
Nick just wanted to let you know I fixed your Chili and it was Awesome! ty for sharing it!
Oh I’m so glad you like it! Did you add the secret ingredient?!
@@Nicgyver I did just like you had on the video, Awesome please keep bringing food videos I love to cook and like to try new things and different for the old ones.
Way cool that you showed this. I always wanted to go diving and never had the time or the money. I am jealous you get to see the wonders of the water.
Loving all the videos you guys r putting out. It’s interesting to learn about the added expenses divers have to incur in order to be safe. most people r not aware of all the costs involved. Thanks for teaching those of us that don’t dive everything that’s involved in keeping you safe.
Pretty much how I used to do it when I was testing cylinders at the dive shop I worked for. We had a drying rack with a manifold with a bunch of tubes that you invert the cylinder on, there was a fan that forced air into the manifold to dry all the cylinders.
How can you tell if a tank is contaminated? Thanks for all you do.
The air will smell or taste bad (not normal), or the inspector will discover that it’s bad. The inside of a scuba tank has to be visually inspected once a year.
Thankyou
Very interesting...love learning new things! Thank You! Looking forward to more new things!
I’ve never gone diving, but watching you do these things is fascinating. It seems so creative!
Hello from Baltimore MD That was very interesting to watch. I Enjoy watching your videos. 🙂

Had no idea tanks even needed to be cleaned like this!
Not very often but sometimes yes! Thanks for watching!
Love videos, the informative and the entertaining. The videos with the 4 of you are hilarious. Just wondering are you married? Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
Haha not yet no.
So interesting.
Informative. Something I knew nothing about, but...I learned how to clean an air tank tonight 😀

Thanks for the information.
You bet!
Nick Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Thanks, you too!
Glad your doing videos
Thanks, I love it!
Really good to know. Nick , you are in great physical shape and very handsome, what's keeping you from marriage? Not to mention your great personality and humor ☺️❤️ I'm happily married and I could see alot of women falling for you 🤷
Thanks you’re to kind!
Do you have to sanitize the nozzle from contamination also?? Interesting!! 👍
I guess it depends on how bad it’s contaminated. Might even have to replace it. Thanks for watching!
Nice! Nick, it seems like you can do everything. If that's true will you please send warmer weather down my way? 😁
It’s miserable here as well!
Nick Merry Christmas.
Thanks, you too!
Cool.👵❤
Hi ! Great job ! Not that I know anything about it !! LoL ! How heavy is a tank ? ! Does the water keep it lighter when you wear it ? Take care ! Deborah Canada 🇨🇦
Anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds normally. Depends on size, if it’s made of steel or aluminum, or if it’s full of air or empty. The air inside a full tank is about 5 pounds. Thanks for watching!
Would vinegar be helpful in the process or would it be too acidic? This is fascinating. Thank you.
Not sure about the vinegar 🤷♂️
What about the other parts of the equipment?
The valve may have to be flushed or replaced.
Can you elaborate on the correct mixture to use for different tank sizes? I can't see what size tank you used for the demonstration because my cell phone screen is too small. Was it an 80?
Yes it was an 80. You might use slightly more SG if you have a 100 or bigger.
@Nick Rinn thank you so much. Always nice to learn from a professional such as yourself!
💞
Hey Nick how you doing man! 👍
I’m doing great!
@@Nicgyver good to see you haven't seen your dive in Truckee......good to see and hear your well man! Airborne Paramedic here! Yup I dive too! 👍
