@@Carl_in_AZ I worked for IBM for 30 years. I was there when they made the biggest loss in corporate history, though I can’t claim all the credit! When I joined, they had 70% of the mainframe market, which was effectively the whole of IT at the time. They made a series of strategic blunders. They assumed that they would control 70% of the PC market, as they had for mainframes. However, they built an open IBM PC platform based on Intel hardware and Microsoft software. They let Microsoft have all the royalties on Windows running on non-IBM PCs. It got to the point where Intel and Microsoft controlled the market. Unable to make a profile on PCs, they sold the PC business to Lenovo. They did not invest enough in mainframes, so mini-computers (servers) took over. Hardly any businesses use mainframes these days - only banks and some retailers. IBM invented relational database, but lost that market to Oracle. IBM decided to build a software business, but only infrastructure software. They left the application software field open for Oracle to dominate. Now Oracle has slightly less revenue than IBM, but 50% more profit. IBM went into the outsourcing business, which is low margin and very tough. I know, because I worked in it. Eventually they got rid of that as well. I left a long time ago. Looking on the web, IBM seems to have reinvented itself in new areas, which is great to see.

Japan auto industry is in trouble, it's too rigid in its own ways, really don't like change or admitting they got something wrong.
Honda for example, they're so deluded they think selling a base model Civic for $48k is a good idea. No more Jazz, no more City, no more Odessey. Basically, nothing under $40k if you want a Honda vehicle, with piss poor options, and one of the lowest warranty on the market, then they wonder why people look elsewhere.
I loved my little 2013 Civic hatch, zippy little 4 banger that was cheap and cheerful motoring with a 6-speed manual box. Now that it's time to move it on, I'm saying hello to a BYD Seal soon.

Many countries recognize that foreign oil dependence and the resulting trade deficits is undesirable for economic autonomy over the long haul. Thailand is a net oil importer, mostly from the UAE and Saudi Arabia. It makes total sense for these countries to move away from fossil fuel imports ASAP. One would think that Japan, a huge importer of foreign oil, would lead the way with high tech EV adoption. But this resistance to progress underlines the massive global economic and political power that the oil cartel and multinational legacy automakers exert to maintain their current profits and "business as usual" existence.

I think it is a good thing that Chinese EVs are flooding the global car market. For years, we have had to put up with stupid, money-hungry, and now low-quality European vehicles. Although Japan produces high-quality cars, they are also overpriced. Now that Chinese EV cars are entering the market with gradually improving quality, better design, and lower purchase prices, I believe this is a good thing and a game changer. I see some European and Japanese car manufacturers going bankrupt if they do not exercise caution and begin to consider competing with Chinese car manufacturers, as Tesla is currently doing. So European car manufacturers, such as Mercedes-Benz, which currently produce very low-quality engine cars, must get their act together. I believe BMW and the Volkswagen Group will be the most likely European car manufacturers to be around for a long time. I don't see Mercedes-Benz surviving for too long due to their poor quality, cost-cutting of their engines, and now too many plastic interiors. My advice to Mercedes-Benz is that it is one thing to design a beautiful car, but what lies beneath the hood is very disappointing to many of your customers around the world. Electric vehicles are the next big thing, and the Chinese car manufacturers are doing an excellent job of developing them.

@@hardi.howdy.983 At the end of the day, the Japanese are not stupid. If nothing else, after their defeat in WWII and the nuclear bombings the Japanese know all too well that they cannot control world events at all, no more than they can control the weather.
The Japanese are quickly realising that their petrol (and hybrid) car industry is rapidly and inexorably declining to zero relevance, as these legacy cars are utterly pointless, expensive and obsolete in the 2020s and 2030s.
The Japanese have been down this technological disruption path before with the demise of the once almighty Japanese 35mm film camera industry.

I am currently in the process of buying a car in Thailand. I'm considering between a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and a Chinese SUV EV, such as an MG or BYD. If I could start over, I would likely choose a brand-new Chinese SUV EV instead of a used Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. New Chinese SUV EVs are significantly cheaper than Japanese combustion engine cars here. Additionally, Chinese electric vehicles have been marketed in Thailand for at least two to three years, so there are plenty of reviews available on CZcams for me to watch.

I owned a Honda Civic for 10 years and bought a BYD Seal 5 months ago. It is a brilliant car, 308 BHP beautiful interior, nice to drive, running costs are a fraction of an equivalent ICE with 1 unit of electricity at 4.4 Baht. I did a road trip from Chiang Mai to Phichit last weekend, a round trip of 1000+ km and there were chargers every 30 to 50 km, I was worried when I started the journey but it is so easy. I only used PEA Volt and EV station pluz but I am registered with Elexa and EA Anywhere. The PEA chargers where very reliable whereas the EV chargers could be a bit temperamental and having to reset the app and plug in plug out to get it going. I have absolutely no regrets buying a BYD and am very happy with it....recommended. I could have paid cash for my Seal but BYD have a 2% loan deal and with the Bangkok bank paying 1.6% on a deposit account there is no point....worth considering unless MG are offering the same.

Toyota’s CEO sounded exactly like all the CEOs of Nokia, RIM and Microsoft back in the day when iPhones came out. They had absolutely no foresight and no new innovations but to make phones smaller. Fast forward to today’s automobile industry, the US and Japanese car makers are all very short sighted, no foresight and rested too long with confidence that they will never be taken over. Classic tale of the Tortoise and the Hare.

As far as I can see, any country or manufacturer wanting to compete on EV with China faces a daunting task. Unless they are willing to JV with the Chinese manufacturers, including the supply chains to start production plant in their own country (like what Turkey is doing). Or Spain's EV Motors JV with Chery to open its first European manufacturing site in Catalonia.

Governments around the world are pivoting away from importing fuels when they can actually use renewables to power their own country. It makes complete sense not to send $billions to foreign countries but rather build out an ecosystem that keeps the money local. Building and selling EV's locally are just one of the first easy changes to make to reduce reliance on others. Ethiopia, Thailand, China, micronations and more to come.

most japanese cars now are providing less for more money. Build quality dropped across the board, fitting felt cheap and fragile. Features are limited, increased the price but somehow you are getting less value. In Southeast asia, Japanese auto safe bet is only the cheap and low end cars, middle class are now opting for EV for they are considerably cheaper and gas prices is expected to go up even more. On a zenix toyota still used a rather cheap camera but the chinese counterparts used much better resolution camera and 360
