When is T Silent in English?

- čas přidán 7. 11. 2018
- The T is a really tricky letter in English. It is perhaps the consonant that has the most variation in pronunciation. And there are many occasions when the T is silent in spoken English. In this video, you learn when the T is silent in English. Find out the correct pronunciation of words like internet, printer and Atlanta. You'll also learn how to pronounce ballet, gourmet and other words borrowed from French.
we Spanish speakers is very important this rule, because we always want to read or pronounce "TL" as it is Spanish, combining in a single sound this letter (TL) for the example Atlantic Ocean. Thanks Nicole excellent video.
Thank you so much for this. I remember this as one of the lessons during our high school days. I'm in college now, and I was checking to see if i remember it right. I was surprised when google pronounced 'internet' as internet and not inernet. Thank you for this vid, I hope you are doing well, ma'am! ❤
Thank you💙
You are amazing! Thanks for the videos!!!
Thank you, I appreciate your kind words.
That was great 😊🌹 Thanks 🌹
So glad you liked it.
But sometimes it is pronounced after an N but I don't know why: contest, mental, dentist. Is there a rule here?
Good question. I don't pronounce the T's in mental and dentist. Some speakers do. T's aren't always silent after an N. Some people pronounce them, some don't. If there's a primary or secondary stress on the syllable (contest has secondary stress on "test"), the T will not be dropped.
Thanks for the explanation, this letter mostly confuses most of the learning foreigners.
So true - I get so many questions on the T.
Can you think of any more words with a silent T?
British
Often
The first bunch of pronunciations with the silent "t" are very much a feature of American accents, not so much in the rest of the world. The same is true of that last group with (Investment etc.).
Thanks a lot! :)))
You're welcome!
Saint Laurent the words sound different when taken apart from each other, but the "T" stays silent in Laurent no matter it being single or as a group.
For my winter is the winner

There are many, but some of them the t is fully pronounced like "intelligence". Other words where the t is pronounced or not it is up to Eglish fellows, it seems that there is no obvious rule: check these:

My goodness. There are different rules depending on the circumstance the nt is found in. One of the bigger ones is when the T begins a stressed syllable, it's pronounced.
Hello how are you? I been searching trying to find out the about the "t" in watch and watcher, is it silent or is there a quick stop and go like "wat'ch" pronciation of it?
No t in those words. -tch endings in English are just pronounced -ch. No difference between which and witch.
I have a question, please.
When I say sports without dropping the T, is my pronunciation correct?
I am an English learner, and I just want to pronounce correctly. My concern is not American or British. I just do what seems to be easy for me.
Yes, pronounce the T in sports.
@@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole thanks. I will pronounce T between the two constants
Hi my teacher thank you for explain the words
Can you explain “ somehow “ and when I use it
Take a look at the entry in the Longman Online Dictionary. There are many sample sentences, so you can get a feel for how to use the word. www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/somehow
@@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole madam my big promblem is pronounce I cannot pronouce correcto so what do i do to improve
What about casual prononciation of "internet" where the final "t" is almost silent or att least not fullt articulated, like "intern'e". THE tongue may be in the position of a "t'" but with reduced airflow. Att least this is My observation.
Great question. Those final T's in American English are very light. It's referred to as a held T or catch stop. Your tongue moves to the position to pronounce the T, but does not release the sound. See my video on that: czcams.com/video/E8L6ROP9KaQ/video.html
Does this apply to both British and American english?
Good question. This is American English. British typical pronounces T's fully.
What about hunter and warranty? Is it hun’er and warran’y? Spanish speaker here
Great question. You hear both with the ones with "er" endings. "Hunter" is like "printer" and "winter". Some people say it with the T and some without. For "warranty", the "ty" syllable is not a weak syllable, so the T is not silent when it starts a stressed syllable. You'll notice that you hear the Y sound fully pronounced, but this is a secondary stressed syllable. The primary stress is on "war".
How to pronounce guarantee and granted..which word we should spell t silent
Great question. Guarantee has primary stress on the syllable beginning with T (tee), so that is a normal plosive T. Granted has the T following an N, so you will often hear that T become silent.
T
Is the t in ( she hates me) a flap t or held t?
Great question. A held T, but blended into the final S, so there's no a puff of air on the T, but a slow release of the S.
The /t/ in kitchen is silent?
Yes, just like in other words like "watch".
When i did Google then i seen "center "
Here obviously t pronounced
But why u have told t silent
I didn't understand why u told so
Good question. You will hear it both ways depending on how careful someone is speaking. In more careful speech, you will hear it. In faster, casual speech, it may be silent. This is American English too. Other varieties of English are different.
@@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole oh i got it tnx so mc
The t in “silent” should be silent as per n rule. We would stay silen 😂😂.
sentimental /senimental/
Excellent, and there are 2 possible silent T's in that word!
@@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole Yes, I now realize : /ˌsen.t̬əˈmen.t̬əl/, thank you Nicole
Thistle....
Great example of a silent T word. Thanks for the comment.
How do you pronounce the t in these words?
Fain(t), wen(t), ren(t), sen(t), cen(t), appointmen(t), assignmen(t), patien(t)
All pronounced! :) like in sport for example
@@gwynneio how do you pronounce the t in these words?
1- i can'(t) eat rice.
2- it wasn'(t) amy.
3- she isn'(t) a good girl.
In American English, they're generally held T's, meaning that they're only half pronounced. Don't release the air on the T. I have a video on the held T. Look for it. It will explain more.
Not really in American English - see the comment I left.

Why is T pronounced in MOUNTAIN ?
Great question. Most native speakers of American English pronounce it as a glottal T, since it occurs before a syllable ending in N. Check out my video on glottal T.
