We had these on clearance at my store for $39, so I picked one up to try. I'm honestly a fan. I have quite a few Leathermans that I rotate through depending on my plans for the day, and I wouldn't put this up there with the Surge, Wave, P4, or Supertool, but it's half the size and feels much lighter in the pocket. The knife blade leaves a lot to be desired, but otherwise I find the tools pretty useful. It's nice to be able to flip it open one handed, the 3d Phillips is great for light tasks, and the pliers have a lot of leverage and come to a nice point. The bit driver isn't my favorite, but if I plan on needing different bits I opt for a different tool for the day. This works great for warm days when I'm wearing gym shorts and don't want to weigh them down, or for around the house when I want to have something convenient in my pocket but I'm not far from my toolbox.

As a life long construction worker I've bought dang near every multi tool on the market over the last 15 years looking for one that is atleast decent in all areas. As far as im concerned the SOG power pint multi tool (smaller version of this tool i believe)is the winner as of what i edc right now. I don't know if he is just being overtly nitpicky or just hadn't really used many multi tools in the field but I'm in love with this little power pint. It's small and light weight for what it is(18 tools). Yes the metal could be better but i have no issues so far. The Absolute best aspect is the center mounted bit driver. Most multi tools are off center well if your having to screw in a right screw or mess with any flat head screws its a pain and awkward when it's off center. Another ferrite that beats the competitors is the geared opening. It's so smooth yet had enough tension not to flop around doing it one handed. Coming from someone who literally uses a multi tool for hard use on a regular basis(cause im lazy and hate going back all the way to the truck some times) the SOG power pint blows the competition out of the water every time!

While the description says "tool only" it does come with one each of a bi-metal czcams.com/users/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI and HCS blade plus an adaptor plate for non-DeWalt blades. Wish I had known that before I bought the blade kit, but oh well. Since I already have a DeWalt drill, charger and batteries there was no need to buy more of those so this was a great deal. There is one other consideration. DeWalt does't sell the depth guide separately so you need to buy the three parts which make it up -- the N275350 block assy, the N275341 metal rod and the N278801 knob. Amazon does sell all three.

I had a SOG PowerLock and thought it was the ultimate multitool. Then I got the Leatherman Wave+. The Wave+ is the best multitool I have ever used and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I use it literally every day. My issue w/ Leatherman is how they fought my first and only damaged tool. They thought the damage was intentional (wasn’t, happened just after I bought it), and when that failed said it was misuse (maybe?). I actually consider this probably my favorite mt and have been carrying it for about 3 years rough use. I like the size, mainly it's slimness, for the amount of tools you get. I like how the tools can be unlocked with it closed and the array of screwdrivers. For the bit driver, the added material to the jaws prevents the gears from gouging the palm and comes in handy as a light use hammer.

I started carrying a Leatherman when they first came out in the early 90's. I eventually got a Supertool 200 and I used and abused it for about 15 years. When the handles got a little loose, leatherman had me send it in and they sent me a new Supertool 300. I still have the original Leatherman from the 90's (no locking blades) and 2 Supertool 300's and a Core. I have a couple Gerbers and they are ok but for me I will just stick with Leatherman--well thought out--well built--and a 27 year warranty. Good review and about what I expected from SOG

I've only had it for about a month, and yeah the painfully small knife constantly needs tuning up, but it's still quite functional and pretty easy to learn to deploy one-handed. The hotspots don't bother me and the slim and light design make carrying it totally worth it every day, even with an extra dedicated EDC blade. Buttery smooth operation. I wouldn't pay 60- 70 but I got mine for 36 so I'm happy

The Wave is “the way”, but also check out the value of the Roxon Storm. I carry a quality pocket knife as well, so I forgive the mediocre blade on it because the design and other features are fantastic. It goes with me everywhere with the 1/4” bits it came with. I also managed to very easily sneak a 1/4” drive tapered drill bit into the pouch with it, which comes in very handy.

I even tried the Gerber center-drive. I like the SOG better then all the others by far. My main issue with the wave is unless you are careful it with pinch your palm every single time your pliers slip off a nut or whatever you are trying to grip onto. It hurts like hell and you just want to throw the thing at the wall. The Super tool was my favorite for a while but all the tools are on the inside and that gets annoying. I used to swear by the sog. Carried one for 12 yrs. Never liked the leathermans. But could mostly day that was because the sog was a 1 handed open and could do so like a butterfly knife. I ignored the fact that all the tools were flimsy, always broke them, could never get a grip on any bolt for the same reasons you mention and I have big hands as well. The screws kept coming loose making it flimsy and constantly in need of tightening. The compass was nice (drywall) and I liked the measurements (although hard to read) along the handle. But it failed me consistently. I really wanted to like it. I mean that butterfly opening was so very helpful in so many situations. And then, fed up and irritated with sogs customer support, I found the leatherman free p4. One handed open (butterfly), magnetic, free flowing, substantial tools. I was sold. I bought a SOG multi tool back in early 1992 or 1993. The pliers folded over, and there weren't any outboard tools in the handle; all the knife and screwdrivers were on the inboard of the handle. It wqs probably their learning curve multi tool. Many years later , I bought the Leatherman Surge, and it made the SOG MT feel like a toy. The SOG knife blade and file and screwdriver do not have a liner lock or lock back. You have to fold the pliers down down and fold handle back to prevent the knife or other tools from folding over and cutting your fingers off.
It looks like SOG has come a long way from 30 years ago. I keep the old SOG in the glove box to my truck for minor tools like removing the windshield wipers to install new wiper blades.

The smaller plier opening is the trade off for the gripping power. Simple physics. You just can't get twice the power out of nothing.

  • @dimensionalencounter3689

Something to keep in mind about sog, they were bought out a year ago. There is no more repair dept and they do not warranty the old lifetime warranties sog had prior to being bought out, now it’s a 1 yr manufacturer defect warranty. They still offer knife sharpening for 10 dollars. But for the price of these multi tools warranty is key. Leatherman and victorinox has the best warranties out of the big 4 including gerber in the big 4.

I carry a Gerber centerdrive. For me, a multitool is pliers first, screwdriver second, and everything else is a bonus. Most tools have decent pliers (looks like the power access doesn't, sadly) but the off-center drivers on most cramp up my hands after a while.

Great job 👍 as always. I agree I can't compare SOG to any of my Leathermans' and many of my Gerbers. I have a Powerpint and it's okay. It fills a niche similar to the Juice series now discontinued from Leatherman but just the feel of the Leatherman's multitools inspire some confidence while using them and over my career as a professional mechanic (I mean I get paid 😅) I've used Leatherman's warranty maybe a half a dozen times in the last 30 years and they've always came through, Gerber too. So if a company produces a good product then in turn is true to their customers with a good warranty they earn my business and I'm not knocking SOG's customer service I just don't have any experience with them but I just prefer a Leatherman or Gerber's feel and quality and that comes from personal experience. Thanks for the review.

I rock the skeletool every day at work and has the blade in 154 cm does everything I need and I still have stuff I haven’t had to use yet but one day I know I will need everything it has on it. No it doesn’t have an awl or can opener but if I needed to open a can I think I could make the skeletool work for that. They had put the skeletool in 154cm blade steel on the discontinued list on blade hq so I ordered a backup just in case. Lol love my skeletool & if the skeletool doesn’t cut it the wave has a plethora of tools that get it done. Yes I have a wave and a crunch and an original multi tool that still works just fine. 😁

Honestly, I want to like SOG’s products, but I’ve had bad experiences with their QC. My Switchplier is essentially useless because the plier mechanism is stripped. My Trident had so much wobble in the pivot (even after adjusting it) that I never used it. And my Visionary 1 had so many loose screws that I had to take it apart and loctite every single one. On the other hand, I have several other SOG products that are awesome. I feel conflicted about the brand as a whole.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 Před 2 lety +1

Okay interesting, I liked the look of the Powerpint but the compound leverage pliers I thought may perhaps be overengineered, at least to the extent of there being more working parts which can go wrong. Looks the same is the problem with the Switchplier. That's another reason I'd avoid power assisted opening knives, sooner or later you're going to have problems with the mechanism.

I purchased one about 2 years ago primarily for the accessible tools on the outside and lesser degree the pliers & driver bits. I have had no problems at all - for what I need. HOWEVER 1) as you point out the blade is junk. If you are looking for a multitool that has a usable blade - look elsewhere. 2) the metal is soft and the pliers strip out easily. So if looking for hard use pliers - again look elsewhere. For most people a multitool without a decent blade or pliers is just a chunk of metal in their hand.

Well, the Leatherman surge out beats the Leatherman wave plus because I have it, the SOG original multitool has always been the best in my opinion, because of the power pliers with the gear driven technology, they have a patent on it.
I also have Gerber’s and SOG’s that were issued to me while in the military, and I still use them very much and all three still do very very well.

Excellent video. The Sog brand is quite an issue..... On the one hand, I really like the concept, even more so in the case of the compact size ones for EDC; but the finishing details often require touch-ups or modifications with a mini lathe to a recently purchased tool. I have a Leatherman WAVE+ and a MICRA, and I am extremely satisfied, although I saw in several forums that several people had breakage problems with Leatherman. I also have two Victorinox multi-tools and I think they are of superlative quality. Greetings.

The compound pressure from their geared pliers is amazing it quite literally can provide more grabbing pressure than any other multitool of its size range and even many larger! So in that one way it is quite literally superior to every other multi tool available…
And it’s inferior in every other way. I just want to slap them around and shout “why? why! why? Why!”

  • @mariusengelsen7194

LOOK at that compared to the Skeletool!
Multi tools have sevaral problems. Two of them are:
1: The more tools you put into the tool, the worse the individual tools are. I would much prefer a few good tools, that can do a lot of different jobs, than a ton of tools that really can't be used to very much.
2: WIRE CUTTERS are crap. Why not put in a regular side cutter in the pliers? They outlast a wirecutter by far, cut most things better (like electrical wires, especially fine-stranded), zip ties, screws, nails, staples and they cut muck nearer an object.
The skeletool seems very good, but shoud have a side cutter instead of a wire cutter. I has a good knife (this way you do not need a serrated knife, a wire stripper, belt cutter scissor and so on), and the bit driver is great compared to internal bits.
