Excellent and very interesting comment about this cinematographic masterwork. As always, Criterion offers to it's audience so much precious content, without saying the meticulous care you generously give for each movie you keep in hands. Watching this visual gem after you worked so brilliantly on it is like watching this movie for the first time, even if we watched it many times. I'm eager to buy my copy. Thank you.

Excellent review and overview, thank you! Have seen Picnic... several times already on Criterion Channel, so I'll have to let some time go by before ready to see again, but it will be this 4k when I buy, love the film. As for other Criterion titles, the one I yearn for the most recently went out of print a year or so ago...Babette's Feast. Do you have any info or rumors on when or if Criterion resumes again? Thanks.

thanks for taking time to comment - I have Babette's Feast in my collection - they haven't announced anything yet but I'll keep my ear to the ground.

Thanks so much for this very fine review. I do own the Blu-ray combo edition from some years back, which included Joan Lindsay's novel, but it sounds like the 4K upgrade might be worthwhile. Do you own the Second Sight edition as well? Curious to know how the two UHD versions compare.

I do have the second sight, it also has the Joan Lindsay novel, it is the same restoration but the encoding Criterion uses is slightly different, there has been some criticism on how it has been re-graded on 4K colourwise as it does look different to the Criterion Blu-ray transfer.
