  • Headquartered in Tarpon Springs, Florida, Armaly Sponge Company processes natural sponges from the Bahamas, the Florida Keys, and Tarpon Springs. But in recent years, supplies to the factory haven’t been consistent.
    Sponges are harvested off the seafloor. However, a growing number of severe weather events are threatening their populations and making it impossible for fishermen to go out.

    I did a bit of research because I was concerned about the sustainability of sea sponges and they are actually an eco-friendly option and can be harvested in a sustainable manner. This company complies to federal, state, and local fishing guidelines and claims to be sustainable however they haven’t elaborated on what this sustainability truly looks like so that’s a bit sketch…At the end of the day sea sponges are way better for the environment and all ecosystems than plastic sponges.

      As long as it is allowed to harvest eggs from chickens in very small cages by law, I give a sh*t about their guidelines. “It’s within the guidelines” is the most common gaslighting used by governments since governments exist.

    • @Angel-nf4nt
      @Angel-nf4nt Před rokem +3

      It is an eco-friendly option because sea sponges are living creatures that can decompose. Unlike plastic which is a chemical compound that does not break down.
      However, people concern is that sea sponges are animals not plants. That means if their population continues to be slaughtered, will there be enough animals to reproduce? Are we taking into account if using sea sponges are a sustainable solution?

    • @mattks1001
      @mattks1001 Před rokem +5

      First of all, the animal is not destroyed when it’s harvested and sponges regrow fairly rapidly. Secondly, most sponges that are used now are grown on artificial reefs. In the regions around Tarpon Springs at least, there are more sponges now, then before. Sponge harvesting has been regulated since the early 20th century and is one of the most eco friendly products in the world.

      Sea sponges are antimicrobial and don't come apart nearly as quickly as "normal" sponges, which are essentially made of plastic. The sponges in the ocean also propagate from their own tissue, so the little particles that come off when they're harvested grow into new sponges as well.

No matter what happens, we must take into account our reckless actions towards the environment.
