    Under the "What I wish I knew ..." category, early access modules can take several years to reach some form of completion. There probably isn't a single module that is fully implemented and fully bug free.

    Your videos are an enormous help. I have only started in the last couple of months and have bought the F18 + Persian Gulf + Super Carrier. I am finding the learning curve very difficult. My only real experience in sims is Falcon 4 but that was not as involved as this. So far I can start/shut down the F18 up, takeoff, land, fire - sidewinder, amraam and slamer. Mostly learnt off your videos so thank you.

    I would say pick a fourth Gen fighter. The F-18, F-16, JF-17 then buy only it. Learn that thing as fully as possible. Then find everything you can on air combat, and learn that. After that expand the collection to see what you like.

    • @rossmum
      @rossmum Před 2 lety +2

      I would say the complete and utter opposite, unless you're already experienced with stick-and-rudder flying IRL or in other (good) sims. Too many people come to DCS from War Thunder or with no experience even in that, buy the Hornet because Hoggit told them to, then try the older stuff and complain endlessly about things that are only problems if you never take the time to learn basic piloting skills. It becomes almost impossible for them to unlearn their bad habits, and so they either avoid anything that isn't a 4th gen multirole, or will constantly complain and try to get the older aircraft turned into something more comfortable for them. The systems of the 4th gens also cater very heavily to those with an interest in electronics systems management (IT guys must love them), but aren't going to be for everyone.
      My go-to recommendations for new flight simmers are the F-5, MiG-19, or MiG-21 - FC3 doesn't really prepare you for full fidelity aircraft and becomes limiting as you learn, but is definitely something everyone should buy at one point), or the Huey, Mi-8, or Mi-24 if they're into helicopters. Warbirds are obviously personal preference as none of them really have the same tech gap/assistance gap issue. F-14 is another decent choice, but its reputation tends to cause new players to expect far too much out of it.

    • @TorniQuetHD
      @TorniQuetHD  Před 2 lety +1

      Totally agree with sticking to one module to start with, as to what one that is… totally loaded question that has no right or wrong answer. As long as you enjoy it and learn how to operate it properly is all that matters in the end

    • @TorniQuetHD
      @TorniQuetHD  Před 2 lety +1

      But I was inV3rtED 🤪🤪 I agree that many skills you can learn with the earlier tech aircraft do transfer across to more advanced aircraft and do get missed on doing the opposite. That being said if I had zero interest in flying an F5 or MiG I would not buy it just to learn how to fly. The stick and rudder stuff really only comes into play big time when you end up in the merge and if you are flying a 4th gen aircraft correctly you shouldn’t really be getting into that position regularly so it’s not such a big deal… until you get jumped by some blood thirsty Mig-21 pilot who smokes you in a guns fight 🤪🤪🤪🤪 but that’s when the levels of this sim come into play… you think you know stuff until you realise you don’t know anything haha

    Great stuff. the only thing I would add that wasn't mentioned in the video is that the folks who are considering getting DCS, there's a 50% off for first time users when you download and create an account for DCS. This is also mentioned in the DCS FAQ section. What I didn't know, is that the 50% off is via the DCS user interface. You select the modules you want to purchase after you log into DCS. It doesn't matter if it's just one or more modules, it's for the first order. Initially I was going to get 3 modules and I ended getting close to ten because the deal was so good and I knew I was going to be a DCS simmer for the long haul. One thing to mention for an inexpensive mid-range alternative set-up is the VKB Gladiator stick with the Thrustmaster TWCS throttle. The Paddles on the throttle work pretty good for the Rudder and you'll have more than enough buttons between the throttle and stick. I just never see myself using pedals even if they were free. I have the freedom of using the sim on a laptop supported by a "lapdesk" on my lap while seated on a couch or easy chair and putting my feet up. Very comfy and I don't have to leave the living-room to go to desk. ... I sure don't want the restrictions of pedals.
    My other advice is to skip the Nevada map. And skip the Normandy map too. Definitely buy the Supercarrier with the Hornet.

No regrets, I love DCS, you’ll eventually love it too. Just make sure you got some money to spend it, because one simply can’t save money and expect to get away with it in DCS.

    Really well-done video. My friends and myself are just getting into dcs more because we decided well why not. I bought FC3 a while back since i got it on a good sale but never flew it since i was waiting for me new hotas to come in which it just did recently and i can finally put it together and use. (I got the gladiator nxt premium with a twcs throttle (the one that comes with the t16000 so hopefully setting this up goes all well). I also while the current summer sale is going on may grab a full module to run. Which one not to sure but i really like your comment on get one you're interested in/passionate about since dcs is a study sim is a really good comment to make about it. Still not 100% on which one I like the hornets especially after my local airbase had them out in the local airshow (it was actually a double session the thunderbirds in their f-16s were joint flying in a show with the f-18s of the blue angels) so that got me interested in those little f-16s but my childhood and love of planes originated because of everyone's favorite F-14 soo its between these 3 ive narrowed it down to.

    • @TorniQuetHD
      @TorniQuetHD  Před 2 lety +1

      Those 3 are all really great modules, the most feature complete ones are the hornet and the tomcat but the viper is getting worked on quickly now so it should be up to speed with the others in the next year or so.
      Hornet and viper are fly by wire, they pretty much for the most part fly themselves, the tomcat on the other hand will punish you if you don’t coordinate stick and rudder in turns and rolls etc, you really have to “fly” it to get good with it all.
      Also understanding jester and what his limitations are as your Ai RIO is big too, I get frustrated with him losing lock on targets but it’s more that I don’t fully understand how the radar works and what jester can and can’t do that is causing him to stuff up as much as he does. The tomcat is essentially 2 modules cuz you have to learn both the front and backseat to really understand how to fly it correctly. It’s a daunting task that I’m almost ready to have a crack at

    This does not apply to everyone, by any means, but I would say that if you were going to get a module, get that module, and learn it FULLY, or as much as you can before going onto other aircraft. I found it was pretty difficult learning the F/A-18C and the AH-64D at the same time. And personally, I disagree that the Hornet is a "Jack of all trades, master of none," because in my opinion, the F/A-18C slaps harder than any other aircraft I've seen. But that may just be some bias in me cause the RAAF flies it.

    Hi mate. I'm new to DCS..Flight simming in general really...though I've had msfs2020 for about a year now. Glad I stumbled across an aussie channel where you speak in laymen's terms and in a language I relate to :)
    In terms of aircraft, I loved the A10, MIG 21 and Harriers as a kid. But I believe that they are some of the hardest modules in DCS. How hard are they to learn in your opinion compared to like the F18?
    Just want to add that I'm not interested in the FC3 pack, but still a bit worried about the potential learning curve 😬
    Thanks for your time in advance.

    • @TorniQuetHD
      @TorniQuetHD  Před 2 lety +1

      MiG-21 is a handful to fly but you will learn actual aircraft handling and stick and rudder control and coordination in it. It is a really fun module but if you fly it against the likes of vipers, hornets or tomcats you’ll be in for a rough time as it’s lack technology really shows.
      The Harrier is very similar to hornet in terms of systems etc so the carry over from one to the other is definitely a thing, you will pick things up quicker after you’ve learnt one and moved to the other.
      The A-10 was my first full fidelity module, it is an absolute beast for CAS and ground attack but it is very systems intensive so the learning curve is fairly high in it to remember what switch does what. A decent HOTAS is needed for it to fully enjoy it as it is designed to be controlled almost exclusively with the joystick and throttle buttons.
      Which ever one you go with just embrace the learning curve and try to learn stuff the right way the first time and you’ll be sweet 👍🏻👍🏻

      @@TorniQuetHD I think you misunderstand. I'm paying off my debts and throwing my spare cash into investments that look to pay off big in a decade or so. The only sims I play on PC are the old X-Wing and TIE Fighter series and I use a 360 and PS2 for the rest. It boggles my mind how the likes of you, Growling Sidewinder, and others get in on this while otherwise satisfying your obligations. I make $50k per year as a skilled tradesman and I allocate my money to paying off all my main shit ASAP (house, car note, etc) but you guys can spend thousands of dollars on software, hardware, and time to make your videos.

      @@TorniQuetHD yea unfortunately the influx of new gamers too it are probably expecting COD with planes and instead find out it’s a deep complex sim that needs actual dedication and time to learn which is the opposite of what casual gamers want. I’ve had friends say it’s boring looking or “who wants to fly 300 miles for 2 min of action”. I call these people instant gratification gamers, meanwhile I like to learn, study, hone a skill and know that I got a kill based on real skill and I like how the action builds to a 2 min finally.

      @@masterman3178 totally agree ^^^ this is also a big reason why there is minimal griefing and trolling on multiplayer servers too because to be able to actually be a menace or pest to people costs you money which most casual gaming trolls will not pay or be bothered to learn. Kinda a double edged sword, entry level learning curve is extremely high which gets rid of a lot of typical COD style troll players.

    CPU is the main bottleneck in DCS, it doesn't look that way in task manager because DCS currently only utilizes mainly one core. Once Vulkan comes out it will address that issue. I have 64GB RAM and a 3080Ti but a busy liberation mission will still bring me into the low 20 FPS.

    DCS has one of the worst ‘onboarding’ experiences of any application I’ve had the dubious pleasure of using. Now that I’m over the worst peaks of the learning curve, I can see why it’s so bad... Being so confusing and without guidance, DCS’ usability acts as a gatekeeper, keeping tyrekickers and children away. Nah, that’s a stupid way to look at it :D. The user experience is just crap!
