    It ain't cheatin' to mount the pole in the best place you got.
    And, good that you were careful soldering on Mrs. TO's table. High risk there, son.

    1. Good stuff!
    2. The things that you're calling "binding posts" are, in fact, called banana plugs. The things that you're plugging them into incorporate binding posts, in that you can unscrew the colored plastic cylinders, wrap a wire around the revealed metal post, and re-tighten the plastic cylinders to "bind" the wire in place. If you loosen the plastic enough you will also see a cross hole into which you can insert wire or other things not flexible enough to wrap around the post, or things messy enough that it would pooch out if wrapped, like stranded wire, and then, of course, tighten the plastic cylinders.
    3. Soldering the banana plugs means that you can't re-use them (at least not easily) if you have to replace a broken wire. (Breaking at the end of the solder flow being an especially likely.) There may be small enough non-insulated crimp on butt splices available, but you could also use a cut off part of a tiny crimp lug, or small diameter brass (etc.) tubing to crimp (and possibly solder) onto the end of the wire, giving you something that the screw will bite into and hold really well (or that you can insert into the cross hole of the binding posts).
    4. Have you tried over/under winging on the turtle winders, seeing if there is a good finger placement to get it pay out smoothly> (Tomas is sure fast with the figure 8 winding method, but those turtles sure look cute.
    5. Work on squeeze keying. "C" doesn't require 4 paddle presses, but just 2. The only letters that require either paddle to be pressed more than once are "P" and "X".
    6. Separate video, but, "Skywave" in NVIS means reflected off of the ionosphere. The ionosphere must be thicker for this than to reflect a glancing blow (such as for DX), so you must use a frequency well below the MUF, since thickness required increases with "photon energy" (frequency). NVIS seriously beats ground wave when there's a mountain in the way, but you mid-westerners wouldn't know about that.

    Great ideas! I agree with those who question soldering the ends of the antenna leads. I tend to break one of the ends about weekly. I also recently picked up a 4 band KX1 to go with my KX2 and KX3. The KX1 isn’t the most versatile of the three radios, but it is without question the most fun. I use 58 feet of radiator with a 12 foot counterpoise and it tunes up on all four bands.

      Good tips John, I'll have to do some more testing to find out... thicker wire means bigger winders too!

    Now I'm going to have to make one for my KX2! Recommendation on the banana plugs. Plug them into the cobra before connecting to the radio so as to not put too much torque on the radio's BNC while fiddling with it.

      That's a great suggestion! I'm looking forward to pics on TOADs when you get your KX2 box built!

    I love this. You saw it, you wanted it, you made it, now you have it. That is the hardest hamming of all, my friend. Carry on.

    I have a KX1 with 30m and auto tuner. You do want to run with 12vdc gives you 1 to 2 watts more. I used it back when I would go backpacking (pre POTA) and was quick to set up and have fun. I found that a upright V that terminated right at the rig was the easiest and operates without ground losses. Not going to carry and install 40 radials so eliminate the need.

    Great video and excellent project. One question: did you measured the box? See if it can go into a bigger Go to Box or Backpack.

    I love these. It really hones your radio load out to participate in these exercises like this. I am continually asking myself do I need this, will I need it. If I don't have it and need it, will I fail. And it is okay to fail. You learn from failures. This kit I can tell is one of those that has been honed and I love that you did your own. Would it be ok to put in there like 10 foot or 5 foot of rg -316? Is it weird for you to be working with it without some kind of feedline to give you room to work?

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  Před 10 měsíci +1

      You might be able to stuff some light coax in there, sure. its not /that/ weird, but it is a little different than normal.

    The antenna wire will break off at the solder joint in the binocular/BNC connector so you will have to solder it again, and again, and again, especially that fine wire. Screws alone will hold it and it can be easily repaired in the field. Just my opinion and experience. I do carry a butane soldering pencil but that’s an extra thingy to have on a trip to the field. Good show my friend even though you talk too fast for my old ears. Dave K8WPE since 1960.

    Steve. Do you think this would work with js8call?

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  Před 10 měsíci

      I don't think this radio would work out, its CW only. Take a look at the QDX from QRPLabs.com - I have some videos on here about it - same size, no tuner, so you'll want the ANTTuner to go with it or a real N7DDC ATU-10: newdiytech.com/products/atu-10-atu10-qrp-by-n7ddc-atu-10-the-tyny-qrp-automatic-antenna-tuner
      It would be interesting to see if it would fit in this case.

    You would be better off with 3X18650 batteries. This would give you 12.6V after charging, then falling to 11.1V.
