Jaedyn Shaw bagged a first half brace to propel the United States to a 4-0 victory over Argentina in Group A of the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup on Friday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
With the result, the U.S. have punched their ticket to the knockout round and currently sit in first-place in the group with six points, two ahead of Mexico. The U.S. and Mexico will meet in the Group A finale on Monday.
Argentina started by putting a big scare into the U.S. when Mariana Larroquette hit the crossbar from long-distance in the ninth minute.
That kick-started the U.S. into gear and a minute later in the 10' they grabbed a 1-0 lead when Lindsey Horan played a quick free-kick to Shaw, who fired in a shot at the near post.
Shaw was back at it in the 18' with a sizzling left-footed volley into net off a Rose Lavelle cross to double the margin to 2-0.
A minute later in the 19' Alex Morgan scored her 123rd international goal with a looping header to stretch the advantage to 3-0.
The U.S. never gave up control of the encounter and came within a whisker of a fourth when Emily Sonnett's shot deflected off the post in the 72'.
On the play, though, a handball was called after a VAR review, resulting in a penalty in favor of the U.S. and a second yellow card for Argentina's Miriam Mayorga. Up stepped Horan to take the spot kick and she confidently fired into net to round out the 4-0 scoreline for the U.S.

Shaw is the future of the WNT. A player who scores. Exactly what the team needs. They should drop forwards who can’t find the back of the net or pass the ball. If you watched the U17 games there are some young goal scorers coming soon. Just what the team needs most.
Even other U20 forwards need to be integrated. The US has tremendous depth and talent coming through. The sooner they are integrated the better the team will get. Emma Hayes can’t come soon enough with a plethora of options at her disposal.

Sigue sin gustarme el criterio q se utiliza para pitar penales con manos totalmente casuales y sin intencion de cortar la jugada, deberia la FIFA revisar esta regla y modificarla, si soy delantero/ra, simplemente le apunto al brazo de la defensora/sor y si le da en la mano solo tengo q esperar q el arbitro/tra revise el VAR y pite penal, esto desvirtua el objetivo del juego q es convertir mas goles q el contrario, sumemosle apuntar y "hacer blanco en la mano de las defensoras,res"
