Finland to apply for Nato membership after Russia's invasion of Ukraine - BBC News

  • Finland's president and prime minister have called for the country to apply for Nato membership "without delay".
The move comes amid a surge in public support for Nato membership following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Finland shares a 1,300-km (810-mile) border with Russia. Until now, it has stayed out of Nato to avoid antagonising its eastern neighbour.
Finland will formally announce its decision on Sunday after it has been considered by parliament and other senior political figures.
Sweden has said it will announce a similar decision on the same day.

Well done. Like the Finish leaders said, before the "big geopolitician" started threatening and invading neighbors Finland was by choice outside of NATO. Once he started demanding to command the Finish politics, and one more Russian neighbor invaded, this changed completely Finish reality. It changed European reality. Finally people read and hear what Russia has been saying and doing for a long time

Russia wouldn't have Invaded Ukraine if it stayed Neutral....Russia is only against NATO expansion... Even if Ukraine, Finland, Estonia , Latvia and Belarus formed an alliance to protect them from Russian aggression... Russia won't mind... But NATO comes with United States...and United States has always considered Russia as an enemy and they have a long history...Hence this kind of aggression is seen....

Sweden's and Finland's policy of neutrality is fine, as long as other countries are willing to accept and respect their neutrality. Unfortunately, with an opportunistic bully like Putin he would not respect anything other than sheer military force as a deterrent to his aggressions. The history of Russia's aggressive expansions and invasions over the centuries in the east and west suggest the need for Europe to have a cohesive and coordinated network of defense to restrain this country's appetite for other people's lands.

The only thing threatening that stability is Putin. Every single country in Europe that is not a NATO member must surely be looking at what Putin has done in Ukraine, Crimea, Moldova, Georgia and Estonia and realise that they cannot rely on him to respect their sovereignty and neutrality. Two major differences between Finland and Sweden's situations in applying to Nato compared to Ukraine's situation.
    1. Both Finland and Sweden have been EU members since 1995, Whereas, Ukraine has never been a member, through open to vagueness EU membership does provide some security, through not as strong as Nato's article 5.
    2. Finland and Sweden's militaries, while neutral have been partners of Nato for decades in joint military exercises and co-operation, Whereas, Nato and the West in particular only begin to assist Ukraine after 2014.
Nato has really got to at its Brussels HQ erect a statue to their number one recruiter Vladimir Putin because instead of weakening the alliance (his number one goal) Vlad has totally done the opposite, Doubled Nato's Eastern flank border, (meaning his already struggling forces have to be spread out over a nearly 2,000 mile border), more military and intelligence assets, plus a perfect listening post to spy on Russia's activities from Scandinavia, Give the man an Oscar! 🏆
Fantastic response from Russia to Finland announcement on applying to join Nato, instead of "Let's speak to the Finns and Swedes as to why they came to their decision and see if we can reassure them that we are not a threat to either." "Finland's Nato application is a threat to Russia and we will response with 'military and economic measures' - only convinces the Finns and Swedes more that they need to be in the Nato fold as quickly as possible.

I don't know about Finland but as a Swede I can safely say that if it weren't for the invasion of Ukraine there is no way Sweden would join Nato. The Swedish parlament has always been firm in their stance of not joining Nato (though I personally think we should have joined years ago). If part of Putin's goals with the invasion was to scare other countries he certainly have succeeded, just not in the way he wanted.
Now all of that being said unlike Finland Sweden still hasn't made an offical announcement on whether to join or not. Though going by what everyone is saying the parlament will make a decision by the end of the week and make the offical announcement early next week and it's most likely going to be a yes to joining.

Why is everyone congratulating the Fins? They haven't done anything for anyone, much less for NATO. They've been saying, for decades now --- even after being invaded by Russia once and having 10-15% of its land officially annexed by Russia --- that they're totally self-sufficient and self-reliant on matters of military & defense...
And prior to Feb 24, 2022, only 22% of them said they ought to join NATO. Now, 76%. why? They're not doing us any favor. We already, as NATO folks, have the Norwegians, who also share border with Russia, in the far north. As founding members, the Norwegians were HONEST enough to know they needed to form alliance with other like-minded people and nations for mutual protection and help, in good and in bad times... one for all and all for one, even at risk of destruction and death...
Again, neither Fins nor Swedes cared about that. They've never wanted to fight and to die for OTHER people... until their asses are literally on the line, THEN they say, Okay, we are in! Get our applications approved ASAP!
That is the classic definition of being immoral, selfish, and shameless: you only do things when you know OTHERS could help you, WHEN you need help the most... if it's you helping others, in life and death situations, you say, Nah, you guys are on your own.... but here's 5 cents and a helmet... Good luck. We are neutral so we can't get involved in your life and death activities.
That is not an attitude or an approach to life and living, among other people, that should be congratulated!
