Nirvana was never about staying to a specific style. Kurt was always about doing something fresh, and I think this song has a very different taste. It's unique in it's own way. And at it's least Kurt would've respected it for that.
Great cover, I listen to it a lot. For me the only Nirvana covers better than this one are Civil Twilight (Come As You Are) and Patti Smith (Smells Like Teen Spirit). I’m still waiting for good covers of other classics such as Lithium, About a Girl, Drain You and All Apologies.

Besides it being obvious that Cobain was singing "knows not what it means", the official lyrics published by EMI list the line as being "knows not what it means." Have a listen sometime to a performance in In Bloom by Nirvana.
