How I Met Your Mother scenes that foreshadow and/or justify the ending (part 2 of 5)

  • One of the main criticisms of the How I Met Your Mother finale is that the writers threw away nine years of character development and great storytelling for an ending that might have made sense in Season 1, but did not account for the way the characters and story had evolved over the course of nine seasons.
    This scene compilation attempts to dispel that myth by showing that the ending was on the minds of the writers throughout the series, particularly in the last three seasons. I have also included a few misunderstood scenes (such as the letting go scene in “Sunrise”) that many feel contradicted the ending to show that, in reality, these scenes are actually consistent with the ending.

    Hey guys. So, Part 3 got removed as you probably noticed. Unfortunately I don't know which clip(s) caused it to be taken down and I don't want to risk reuploading it so here are the scenes that originally made that part:
    In Season 8 Episode 21 Romeward Bound, Barney spends most of the episode trying to see the body of his wedding planner. He envies Marshall who could get away with telling her to take off her coat because he "has no stink", implying that Barney DOES have stink. He also says that Marshall wants to spend the rest of his life with Lily and only Lily, but won't admit the same for himself and Robin. Later, Barney accused Ted of claiming to know Robin better than he does. However, Ted's words to Barney are confirmed in Season 8 Episode 23 Something Old where it is Ted, not Barney, who recognises that Robin needs help. After going to help Robin, she tells Ted that she's doubting whether she or Barney are ready for marriage. As it is later revealed, neither Robin nor Barney were really ready for marriage at this point in time.
    In Season 8 Episode 24, Ted chooses to move to Chicago since it is the only way he feels he can move on from Robin. Therefore, Ted's eventual decision to stay in New York for a girl he had JUST MET is proof that Ted had finally moved on from Robin. It is later revealed that Robin chose to move to Japan for the exact same reason that Ted almost moved to Chicago, i.e. that she was still in love with Ted. This proves that Robin never fully moved on from Ted after their breakup. It is also interesting that although at this point in time, Robin had been saying that she was not ready for marriage, part of her still wished it was her marrying Ted, not Stella.

    I always felt like Robin rejected Ted here mainly because Kevin just left her because she can't have children. She knows how big Ted's wish for children is, so she couldn't possibly be with him for the same reasons as there were with Kevin.

      Anna B Kevin still was willing to adopt or have kids by some other way but it was Robin saying that she didn’t want kids at all that made him leave and I feel that’s why she said no to Ted because unlike Kevin she knew he’d love her enough to accept her decision even though having kids was always his dream. Robin chooses to say no and close the door forever so he would be able to find the true woman of his dreams and have the kids he always wanted.

      Plus, Ted said he was willing to sacrifice having children to be with Robin, which she couldn't let him do. Remember the episode with Karen and the lakehouse test or whatever it was called? It showed that them ending up together ended badly. It showed that the writers probably already knew about Tracy, maybe not her name or all of what she's like or that she'd die but that Ted would have children with someone else.

Most felt bad for Barney, but his kid is a blessing in disguise, Ellie proved to us that love comes in different forms, may it be romantic, friendly, or parental. Unpopular opinion alert! I actually like the ending. I mean, okay, it is a little rushed and messy... but that's how real like looks like. You want to have your happy ending and then everything is messed up and you have to choose your path again. Robin loved Ted, I believe she did. She had problems, she didn't know how to express her feelings, but it's her father's fault. The story about the mother itself foreshadows the ending. It should be a story about the mother specifically, but it isn't - Ted finally had worked through Tracy's death and he recalled good memories from his 30s. Even the Barney's ending is satisfying - okay, he lost Robin, but he got a wonderful little daughter that turned out to be the only woman able to change his behaviour. So yeah, I think that this isn't a perfect enging but this it the ending made by life itself and corresponding with the characters of the show.

      He loved her, that's sure! Tracey was the perfect woman for Ted! She had exactly what he liked to have in a partner. She understood him perfectly and shared him the same tastes and point of view... Ted was happy with her, he had what he deserved with her (a calm life full of love and happiness) BUT his true love was Robin! Robin wasn't the perfect woman for him but he still loves her and that's the real love (no logic, no compatibility, time can't kill it...) maybe it doesn't make sense, but love doesn't have to be meaningful or make sense to be!
      Robin wasn't the best one for him but he always wanted Robin! Even all! ♥️

    2:18 actually I think that at that time, Ted was right, for once in his life he understood that he can’t cling onto the idea that one day he’ll win the lottery with Robin
    You just can’t blame it all on timing, it’s like what that German guy said, true love can’t be obtained by one over time, if it hadn’t happened yet, chances are, it won’t, it’s just doesn’t work that way
    Love, the real true kind of love, happens in the moment, you just can’t force it

    • @efoxkitsune9493
      @efoxkitsune9493 Před 5 lety +10

      I'd argue that that's precisely how Ted felt about Robin all this time... I mean, from the first moment he thought "one day, I'm gonna mary that girl." And I believe it's how Robin felt too, deep down, only for a long time she was too scared of making herself vulnerable like that, of admitting it to herself and allowing herself to feel that way. I'm convinced they both truly loved each other. The only thing preventing them from being together was the fact that they wanted different things - Robin wanted to travel and to pursue her career, Ted wanted to settle down and have kids. But by the end of the show, both of those things are taken care of... Ted's already had children and the family life he dreamt of, and Robin has made a career for herself, travelled the world and now is finally ready to settle down... So, for the first time ever, there's nothing standing between them. I'd say that's what the author meant by "timing".

    • @mansurmamdani2896
      @mansurmamdani2896 Před 4 lety +4

      Mark Williams I agree with you. What Ted was saying wasn’t bullshit at all. I think he was truly in love with Robbin at that time. In fact, I think he’s been in love with Robbin since they broke up, but he pushed it aside and buried it because he knew that it wouldn’t happen. He had to move on, and he tried to, but things never worked out for him. That’s why when he found Robbin on the rooftop he threw his feelings out there, everything he had repressed. Then when he found out that she didn’t feel the same way, he gave her that ultimatum. He needed to find a way to move on, and find someone that would help him move on, and the only way he could do that was to give Robin that ultimatum. The only way that he could move on was for Robbin to unequivocally tel him “no”. The only problem was that he didn’t move on. He couldn’t, yet. He was still in love with Robin even after she said no for like the hundredth time. Thats why he stopped spending time with her at until Lily gave birth. It was just too hard for him. That’s why he went crazy trying to find that locket for her, that’s why he said no to Victoria when she gave him that ultimatum, that’s why he was so distraught when she said yes to Barney. He just couldn’t understand why it was Barney and not him (they make a whole episode about it, band v DJ). But the thing was that he had to go through the wedding and everything, because now, seeing Barney and Robbin happy, he was finally able to let go. And in doing that, he was able to find his love.

    Saying that Ted put unfair pressure on Robin in making a decision on whether or not she truly loved him is bs in my opinion. It is unreasonable for him to wait until they're both 40 before the possibility of them being together becomes real, and in the meantime he has his own life to live. It may be a lot to throw at someone, but entirely justified. If she loves him and needs to take time to make that decision it's valid to feel that way, however to expect the person who's subject to that decision to just aimlessly wait for you to make that decision is ridiculous. There is a time limit to this sort of thing, and to suggest otherwise is just plain unrealistic. That time limit varies depending on the person and situation, but here it has clearly been reached and perfectly acceptable to be addressed.

      Alok Otta lol I completely forgot about this drunken rant of mine.
      I see the point you’re making but I’m still inclined to hold my original position. The wishy washy (for lack of a better term) nature of their friendship/relationship was one of the most frustrating things to watch about the show. There’s an argument to be made about the poor writing decisions, but I was touching more on the immature/unrealistic nature of these character decisions. After a certain point you just have to move on, there’s wisdom in the old adage “shit or get off the pot” and the characters and the overall story would have benefitted tremendously from letting it die when it could have. That would have been a respectable story decision, and would have added a nice touch of realism about growing older and finding ourselves in this uncertain world where all we strive for is our happiness, whatever shape it may take. But instead what we got was “wait for the right time, even if it’s a lifetime” and I just think that’s some bs.
      No disrespect though, to each their own.

    • @alokotta5466
      @alokotta5466 Před 3 lety +2

      What I mean is that had Ted allowed her to recover from her breakup than she would say a yes when he did ask her. She just wasn't ready to say "yes" at that point in time, as her entire world had been destabilized at the point in time. The 40 years deal was their way of locking each other down, even if they got together earlier
      Their relationship was so strong as they put platonic first romantic second. Their romantic feelings at least until 2024 were always badly out sync with each other. To get a sense, Robkn was expressing feelings for him before her wedding day, on her wedding day, after her wedding day(it became solid and unshakeable) after that.
      To conclude their only problem is that they were always out of sync.
      As for her and Barney, their relationship was built on getting each other's pants and was always like that. They were incredibly toxic, always fighting and I never believed they loved each other. It's a sheer miracle they even lasted 3 years.

    At the end of the "Weekend at Barney's" episode, Barney makes a pretty solid point about how lying and deception is part of his nature and how their engagement ultimately came down to misdirection and lies as well. He made a similar defensive point about his lying nature at the rehearsal dinner. With that in mind, his wedding vow to always be honest to Robin means that he's giving up a pretty big part of his personality. That always seemed like a major hint to me that their marriage is not meant to last. You can try to change your personality like that for some time, but you can't escape your true self forever.

      Un Viewer Random She doesn’t just keep him as a backup, it’s more the idea that by the time they’re 40, she’ll likely have done what she’s already wanted to, and possibly ready to settle and have kids. That’s because they’re both in love with each other, but like it’s said multiple times, the timing is off. Robin hasn’t traveled the world, or had a successful career yet. Ted wants kids, but she isn’t ready for that, and we learn that she can’t have kids. She only says that she doesn’t love ted to spare him, so that he can hopefully find someone else, and won’t cling on to her. You can see how much she doesn’t want to do it. And all of the characters are build to be like real people; flawed. All of them can be bad people, or just annoying, but that’s what makes them so great

      Jairo Melchor A. Just because ted ends up having kids and then his wife dies, doesn’t mean that she would just be a baby incubator, and i was saying that robin wasn’t ready to have kids, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t adopt once she was ready to settle down (and by ready to settle down, I mean in a point in her life where it makes sense to settle down)
      B. That’s a deleted scene, and is one for a reason. Even if it was only cut to make the last episode shorter, we’ve seen her do the same thing when he was with Victoria the first time, where she invited him over to “make juice,” with the desire to sleep with him, and after she finds out that he lied about breaking up with Victoria does she realize what she asked him to come over and do, without believing they were broken up; because she was lonely and life sucked that day. It doesn’t excuse it, but she’s done it before, and regretted even attempting it afterwards

      @@evildrhobbes5974 See, the issue is that you claim that they are flawed, which is a factual statement on the characters, but you totally forget that by the end of the series none of those flaws end up costing the characters anything.
      Robin was the person who despite loving someone, she was willing to force that person to forfeit relationships if she was lonely, keeping that person as a toy you can leave in a box and open it up when you're ready.
      That very big flaw was shown through out the series, with Robin being a key factor in two cheating moments (with Ted and Barney). That very same flaw didn't end up being an actual flaw because, the ending makes it seem as if it was destiny, that their love was pure and that it was a GOOD example to be learned from, when it was actually not.
      Robin cheated many times, and the actual realistic ending would have been her ending alone, or might as well meet with someone else, thus actually giving the lesson that your mistakes will have consequences. The same with Ted, the moral of his story would have been to move forward with an open ending.
      If anything, the ending we got was the worst fairy tale ending you can come up with. Robin making soo many mistakes, as well as Ted, and those mistakes never paying off anything. Ted ends up with two kids, and Robin doesn't have to feel bad for him so they get together yet again. It is the perfect example of a clearly happy ending (not a realistic one) for Robin that doesn't match the other lessons shown in the series.

    Robin did bad to Ted and Kevin.
    She has never compromised for any of her partner.
    Kevin was willing to marry her even after he knew she did something bad to him, he loved her and wanted to marry her when she revealed she is barren. However she didn't even want to discuss the idea of adoption. She later made herself sound like the victim when talking to Ted. 'He couldn't look past this'. Unattractive personality. Robin is who you befriend or date, not s girl you should marry.
    I wont even go into every shit she did to Ted. Too numerous to count.

If they did have children despite her not wanting to, she'd resent him. If they didn't have children, he'd resent her.
      That being said, I agree that Robin wasn't deserving of everything her boyfriends did for her... Then it's not a good sign that Robin told Ted "You know babies were never part of my plan, but if were to have somebodies babies I'd have your babies". She straight up told Barney and Kevin they wouldn't have children with her
      She was pretty upfront with Barney's mom saying she won't be having any grandchildren, and she had a very testy relationship with her. Even before she told Ted she loved him, she asked Ted's mom "Why don't you want me to have your grandchildren?"
      She felt neutral about Barney's daughter, but oh boy when Tracy told Ted she was pregnant Robin wasn't smiling and got estranged from the gang saying "The guy I probably should have ended up with, with the beautiful mother of child". Yet she loved Ted's two kids as her own having an immediate liking of Penny(luke wasn't there) and it's pretty evident given that she was a central feature of his children's crayon drawings keep in mind she had an aversion to children. In bad crazy, future flash forwards show Robin and Lily having drinks all events are after her divorce from Barney, and only one happens when Tracy is alive. Oh yes, and Robin barely spends time with Lily and Marshall's children and she is talking of an incident with Marvin that was very hard-hitting for her. I can understand why it's hard to see how little time we get to spend with her on screen, and yes she was perfect for Ted, she was everything he needed and wanted, but Robin didn't have to be perfect for Ted to love her, he just loved her unconditionally. It makes sense in the long run, Tracy wasn't scared to die, she was ready to. Finding Ted was like finding a reason to live life again, but when faced with death Ted was far more heartbroken than her. Robin regreted letting go of Ted, she knew he was the one for her, but she couldn't be perfect, her not being able to bare children is a real thing some women struggle with and somtimes love doesn't come as easily as a career does, but at some point a human needs love. Ted never stopped loving Robin, he just had to learn to let her go, but then he had to let Tracy go too, yes she was the mother, but she wasn't his end game, Robin was.

      She ran off to Argentina in order to deal with it. As she said she was "crying her eyes out" and was merely trying to "survive" it, and also they had to hide it as Lily and Marshall were getting married at the time. When she and Ted had their first proper conversation she told him he was 'bigger'. She and Ted broke up it was only because they had differing life goals and Ted was holding her as both of them cried. She ran off to Japan again when he almost married Stella, and came back telling him not to marry stella as she hoped there would be a chance for them in the future.
      When she and Barney broke up she only cried because she felt like another number to him. When they broke up she stuck by her marriage pact with Ted she proposed as Barney proposed the same thing for them. Barney and Robin broke up because they were miserable together. Her reaction to nora was of estrogen fueled jealousy.
      Robin didn't mean it, but said so because Ted pushed her into a hard to get out of situation. Her response would have been very different had he helped her recover and then asked.

    scene 2. robin literally can't bring herself to say I don't have feelings for barney perhaps she could have deeper feeling she doesn't want to admit to herself, and the marriage pact is I guess a sign that she still has feelings for ted I more so took it as her trying to make sure ted still had hope (something she knows he needs), your third point doesn't support the ending, it isn't complete bullocks you can't just label scenes which disagree with your point complete bulloks (seriously do I have to be disagreeing with one of my people), or maybe robin just doesn't love him like I'm all for different interpretations of scenes my first point was a scene interpretation that i felt made sense based on the context provided but this is like a level of mental gymnastics i didn't expect, the last point covered the same thing you said perfectly
    scene 3. the door has closed forever he probably knows in the back of his mind the truth that robin is in love with barney (and that's blatantly obvious if you aren't looking to just justify an ending that you only like cause it supported a bad relationship that you liked) and ted knows that soon they'll both realise the truth of each other and oh yeah that robin doesn't love him, marshall believing otherwise was i believe trying to be ending foreshadowing but that doesn't make the ending better it just shows that the creators were panicking about the ending as well
    scene 4. bro if people are doubting that claim I'm sorry you've managed to find someone with less art literacy than you, seriously though how does this support the ending
    scene 5. yes he had trust issues with quinn i don't know if watched the end of that episode but it's explicitly shown he doesn't have those same problems with robin
    scene 6. yeah and i kinda hate this i will probably agree with you in this scene but just a reminder of the bit in season 9 where he shows that she can trust him, oh wow you still managed to mess it up by missing the part where barney blows up the other playbook like seriously this is going from mental gymnastics to just dishonest very quick

    Robin only ever wanted Ted when she couldnt have him. Once she realized what she was doing to him she helped him close the door and stopped being selfish then she moved on to Barney and clung to him even though he lied and they fought all the time. Even his proposal was wack. He had cold feet the entire relationship right up until their wedding day. It was doomed to fail but killing tracy so ted and robin could be together was the absolute worst way to end the show. It was just a complete let down that it's called how I met your mother and shes there like a few episodes and then she dies and he ends up with manipulative ass robin anyway. What was the point of all these seasons and stories just to have her dead in the ending. I really couldnt stand robin at all. From episode one to the last I didnt like her. Shes super manipulative annoying and kept ted on her hook for years. That's all. Them ending up together is like hey so my wife died and I dont want to be alone will you be with me and the fact that he has kids and she wont take that from him is probably the only reason she said yes because she didnt want to be alone either. That's not the same thing as love. Or to me it's not. Him ending up with barney wouldve been a better ending lol

    • @bookraccoon
      @bookraccoon Před 4 lety

      Okay, hold up, Robin wasn't manipulative. And the point of the show wasn't actually Ted and Tracy or Ted and Robin or anything like that. It had to have a plot to drive it, but the show was really about friendship, the fact that everyone has flaws (aside from Tracy, but she was shown as this woman that Ted had always been looking for and like it was him telling his kids so he wouldn't be very critical of her anyway) and acceptance and humanity and other important life lessons.
      Also, Tracy's death not only helped show the realities of life but also provided happy endings for the characters, including Tracy since she died happy and (I'm sort of an atheist so I disagree with this but when talking fiction I adopt characters' beliefs to see their point of view, like in Romeo and Juliet I see how their double-suicide was their happy ending because they were together in heaven - arguably Romeo might be in hell since he killed Tyballs but you get the point) she seems to believe in an afterlife so I imagine she's reunited with the person she loved that was shown to die in the episode "How Your Mother Met Me"

      Robin objected to tracy/victoria/stella in which cases she cried in a washroom for th ed first time/ ran of to Japan/ roamed all over the world and tried running off with him on her wedding day. Consequently this makes Ted the subject of Robin's pursuit and not the other way round as he was realistically after her in season 1 and No pressure only. He pushed Robin to Barney only for her to spring back at him.

    Oh I call bollocks myself. No, Ted doesn't put Robin under immense pressure when he asks if she loves him. He has every right to get closure and move on with his life. After he gets his "no", he lets her go and even sends her to the arms of his friend.

    • @bendowson3124
      @bendowson3124  Před 4 lety +3

      My point was that Robin DID still love Ted but was not ready to get back together with him. However, she knew that if she admitted her feelings, Ted would still be holding on to the possibility of being with her and it was THAT pressure that Robin couldn't stand. Robin knew that either way, she couldn't give Ted true closure so she might as well give him false closure instead.
      I strongly advise you watch the Season 9 episode Platonish as it clarifies what Ted was really going through at the time. While it was true that Ted was no longer "holding on to Robin" after being told she didn't love him, that state of "not holding onto her" completely disappeared once he got the slightest hint that Robin may still have feelings for him.
