I feel like I should put this here as everyone seems to have a problem with the whistle. This isn't a "rape whistle". It is a survival whistle. Some animals are scared off by the whistle, some won't be. Each animal is different there, but that's not the only purpose of the whistle. The sound of the whistle carries a lot better than your voice does, and is unmistakeable as to what it is. It effectively alerts other people that you are in distress. Say you slip off a trail and become injured, a survival whistle is a great aid in helping people locate you, and is far easier on your throat than trying to constantly shout at the top of your lungs; something that will quickly tire you out.
Even in this video, another hiker arrives right at the end, who no doubt heard her whistle and probably picked up his pace to find out who was in distress ahead of him. Nobody ever claims it's a miracle fix; it should not be your only defense against wildlife. But it is a useful tool that every hiker should carry.

I used to hike on trails and fire roads pretty often but never saw or heard one, except for the day I saw two and heard another while on a two-hour hike. Made we wonder how many times I was within a few feet of one but I just didn't notice. One of Mountain Lions' favorite hunting tactics is to wait in the undergrowth near a game trail (or ANY sort of path or road) and suddenly spring out and grab an animal or human. Never saw one of those, either, but I wonder how many saw ME. If they're hungry enough they have NO fear once they decide to go for a kill.
