  • A lot of my readers are new to LitRPG. My friend and muse, Sarah, joined me for a special Believe in Your Story. We discuss the different types of GameLit and LitRPG novels, how they are connected to mmorpg games like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, and some of the challenges I faced writing in this new genre.
    Check out LitRPG Reviews for a more thorough breakdown of the subgenres within GameLit / LitRPG litrpgreviews....

    I'm actually starting my own LitRPG webnovel, The Weaver - A Dark LitRPG Fantasy. Started releasing the chapters in Royal Road. The actual story line itself comes easy to me, but I'll soon need to start adding the whole RPG elements of leveling and I'm trying to figure out the basics.

    I just discovered this genre a week ago (literally) and started reading a couple and was hooked striaght away! THis is like my dream genre. I also decided to immediately start writing a series (I have four novels already). I am a pantser so this genre is perfect for me! The situations just arise, and I can write them. I'm going to get a couple of books out on draft, and sent to Alphas and Betas, and they can tell me how much I suck (or not).

    What an interesting genre. I guess this what usually made video game premises so unique. Knowing gamelit combines sci-fi and fantasy.

    Do all Litrpgs have to be based on MMORPG settings? What about singleplayer/offline rpgs?

    • @gotAngstVlog
      @gotAngstVlog  Před rokem +1

      Not at all. The key is that the world the book takes place in, virtual or real, has gaming elements. Some books, for example, literally have characters roll dice like D&D.

    • @dspprince
      @dspprince Před rokem

      @@gotAngstVlog So then, a narrative paragraph in a LitRPG story can literally just say a character can't use a weapon type due to class restrictions, cooking a recipe has level up character's cooking skill, or barbarian character can take less damage if he or she is wearing no armor and less clothing? Also, character can wield giant weapons like in Dark Souls, and simply stuff them in inventory bags?
      These kinds of elements? Or are there restrictions to what should and shouldn't when it comes to writing LitRPGs?

    • @gotAngstVlog
      @gotAngstVlog  Před 11 měsíci

      @@dspprince The cool thing about LitRPG is that everything is up to you, whether it is giant weapons or how characters gain cooking skills - as long as it makes sense. It's your world to create. Make the rules, stick to them, or break them for a reason. If you haven't already, you'll learn a lot by reading books in the genre. My videos are an introduction. Go read some of those great stories to see what other authors have done :)

      Character progress (leveling, skill trees, etc.) and stats often with a video game-like interface. These elements can be very heavily featured in the story (Randidly Ghosthound or Defiance of the Fall) or kinda sit in the background, giving way to story, character and plot (Super Supportive, mother of Learning, etc.). It doesn’t have to be full on MMORPG.
      The one rule I have learned more than anything is don’t listen to a stat heavy LITrpg on audiobook. Listening to sometimes vast lists of stats read out over and over is just a terrible experience (looking at you Defiance of the Fall and Primal Hunter)

    I’ve read many of these books over the last several years- starting with the legend of randidly ghosthound on the website royal road. Recently I’ve moved towards reading books on kindle unlimited and am currently reading the grand game series. This genre has been an extremely fun time for me and I don’t regret the hundreds of hours I have spent reading LitRPG books whatsoever. Ofc tho finding unique books that aren’t the exact same thing just with a twist has become a challenge but I still find some outliers that I enjoy.

    So these are linear stories 'about' games that also mention RPG stats/mechanics, but I'm not rolling dice, or turning to paragraph X to make choices? At least that's what I gather. The amazon 'look inside' sections on this genre had me confused enough to search this out, wondering if the gamebook genre had a recent name change, or something. Relating to that, the dice and entire intro really helped confuse matters.

    • @gotAngstVlog
      @gotAngstVlog  Před rokem +2

      Sorry if the intro threw you off, just trying to have some fun. You are correct that it's not a choose your own adventure, or a game that requires you to roll dice. LitRPG and GameLit are books that include game mechanics in the story.

    • @patrickcarney6674
      @patrickcarney6674 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @Reaperman4711, I couldn't agree with your assessment more. This genre came up on my Audible recommendations. I was confused as to what it was. I initially assumed a 'choose your own adventure' theme. After twenty minutes of videos and articles where people babble about stats, game mechanics, and leveling up I was surprised to find out it's nothing more than a linear story written by people who lack the creativity to just write a good narrative.

    I have been thinking about writing one but the choices are overwhelming. I don’t like the trapped in game scenario at all. More so there are a few where people escape real world politics or apocalypse into a virtual world and that bothers me immensely . I can not imagine a single digitized mind not taking a huge memory storage and processing power. A game company would notice that or the lag it causes and reboot the game flushing the system to a previous state. Perms death for the Vr world immigrants. Would a company want to run games if they have to keep them going indefinitely for digitized humans? Having had my favorite MMO shut down I don’t think so. I like stat heavy stories. Real fantasy worlds with a game system overlay for the human protagonist is good....less so if NPCs in that world also level up and such. A good story teller can sell some ideas while others fail miserably. One trope that is getting tiring is that writer with a protagonist that bends or breaks the game system with some bizarre combination of skills that seem useless until used in an uncommon manner. Seems like 2 out of 3 series pull this at least once. Like I said. So many choices....

      It sounds like you’ve already got a list of things you like in LitRPG and things you don’t. That’s a great place to start fleshing out the type of story you want to write. I’d encourage you to write one. It’s challenging, but it’s worth the effort, and there are readers who feel the same way you do and would love to read it.

      I decided to go for a middle option... the character has fallen into a world which from the outside looks like a game, but the character is unaware. When he sleeps, he 'levels up,' and I define those attributes based on what happens.. e.g., if he climbs a cliff to get a better view, he gains agility and exploration points, that kind of thing. No idea if it will work, or if readers will accept this 'spin off', but we will see how it pans out.
