  • This video is a bit tongue-in-cheek because life really wouldn't be so gay without all sizes of ukulele, and truth be known I will always have soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles in my collection . . . but it really does seem to me that just owning a baritone could suffice quite well! The three best reasons I give are: 1. Baritone ukulele with capo can play five amazing tunings including low G,CEA 2. Playing one size ukulele all the time would prevent the difficulties presented by playing soprano one minute and baritone the next! As I say in the video, that's like playing one hole of golf with a kids' set of clubs and the next with an adult set. Adjusts have to be made! 3. Money saved by not having to buy many instruments!
    So, which baritone ukulele do I recommend? I have several caramel baritone ukuleles including rosewood, ebony, acacia, and spalted maple. All are good.

    It may be that the perfect ukulele for you is not the same as for me, but for my buck I don't see how I could do better than buying a baritone!

    This is one of the best videos ever for me, due to my obsession with baritone ukuleles. I play mine with capo on fifth fret since I don’t want to learn the actual baritone chords. I have been seriously thinking about getting rid of all my other sized ukes because this sounds better than all them. I might keep one soprano tuned with the high g. Thanks Rich for this.

      Capo on the second fret of baritone also sounds very good using regular ukulele chords. You play the same chord shapes with baritone as with concert, it's just DGBE chord names are different. 😊😊😊😊

      @@zoozooe 😊😊Everyone should play and enjoy the ukulele they have. If they want another size, that's great too. My video here just provides one option! You can do the exact same thing with a tenor ukulele if it is tuned DGBE. For most people starting out, they should just be happy with the ukulele they have and learn to play it!! Rich

    yup! i did something similar with a travel banjo. i put baritone uke strings on it (same scale), so i can tune it in standard banjo tuning. i built meself a little muffler for the chanterelle at the top. so with a flick of a wrist, i can tune the banjo d-string up to e, muffle the string at the top and strum and pick it like a baritone uke. very handy for busking!

    I just got a spruce top Ohana Bari-tenor hybrid and I LOVE IT! Baritone body with a tenor scale, and Ukulele tuning. I had a wound low G string installed and it sounds really nice. I like switching to different sized instruments for practice, because it challenges me and I think it improves my playing. I've never used a capo, thanks for the tips! And thanks for giving me an excuse to get a Baritone! 😁 Ukuleles are like potato chips, I can't have just one! Lol!

    Agreed with all, Rich. Great video! Another cool thing about putting a capo in the 5th fret of a Bari is that it sounds sonically different than a tenor with the same tuning (GCEA). The bigger body of the Baritone lends to a bigger sound with way more resonance (and more comfortable playing 😊).

      @richdavis4007  Před 5 měsíci +2

      There are pros and cons to both. If your voice is specially suited for GCEA or Low GCEA and your hands are not large like mine, concert could be the one for you. Some chord shapes require a finger stretch on baritone that don't at all on concert. The basic chords are very manageable, though. 😊😊😊

    Dear Rich, I understand your recommendation about Caramel however, they do not ship or sell overseas are there other comparable ukulele that you would recommend along the same price range for a Baritone Ukulele, The Horse ukulele that you have recommended seems to have some inconsistencies in manufacturer from what I have read of the manufacturers review, so it seems they have not cleaned up thier manufacturer process or maybe there is just a lot of old stock floating around

      The baritone ukuleles I own are Caramel (4), Kala (2), Kmise and one vintage York. Your best bet is likely to find ukuleles that are available to you. If you can find a reasonably priced Kala, that would be super. If I was looking for an inexpensive baritone, I would have to go with Horse or Kmise. Possibly you have other choices I don't know about.😊😊

    What do you think is the best ukulele investment for an over 70 year old petite female with small hands, who has been playing for almost 16 months.
    Everybody loves the Concert size. I presently have only soprano ukuleles. I find it difficult to stretch to reach certain 3-finger chords. I can't decide it I should get another soprano or a concert. There is not much difference in size between soprano or concert. Do you think I am ready to move up to a concert?

    • @fiendishthingy1630
      @fiendishthingy1630 Před 7 měsíci +2

      The concert is not much more of a stretch than soprano. I say buy at least one concert for your collection.

    • @richdavis4007
      @richdavis4007  Před 7 měsíci

      I would think the soprano the more difficult instrument. It may take a few days adjustment, but I do think you should give concert a try and probably make that your main instrument. Concert ukuleles usually are priced better than all the others so you could get a good bundle for not much money. @@richdavis4007 Thanks. That is an excellent deal. But, it is not exactly what I want.
      I already have a solid top Enya ukulele: a soprano in blue matte paint over solid mahogany. I bought it exactly a year ago on a pre-Xmas Amazon deal. It is lovely, but I find it a bit heavy to hold. I prefer a good laminate. Because of limitations of space and money, I don't want to acquire too many ukuleles.

      @@richdavis4007 I do plan to give a concert size ukulele a try. Right now
      the soprano size in brand I am looking at is a better buy than a concert.
      When I first started learning to play ukulele 16 months ago, I was such a naive beginner. I choose a soprano
      instead of a concert, because I thought I was not qualified or entitled
      to have a concert ukulele, since I was not going to be performing concerts.
      I thought a concert ukulele was for
      a professional player.

    I like baritones, but they don't sound much like ukuleles, more like small guitars. Also they are usually not in reentrent tuning like the smaller ones, it is basically the four top strings on a guitar. If all you ever get is a baritone then you're not really getting the full ukulele experience (who does this anyway?)

    • @richdavis4007
      @richdavis4007  Před 7 měsíci +2

      I will give up GCEA tuning (high G) in exchange for DGBE, Low G,CEA, D-Tuning, and a couple other lovely tunings I've found. As lots of people know by now I'm not doing things exactly like everyone else! However, I notice guitar players, banjo players (the better ones) use capos. Yes, baritone ukulele is definitely a small four string guitar, but with capo transforms into whatever you want it to be! Is this a fad for me? Time will tell! Thanks, Keef. Rich
