  • At Intertraffic Amsterdam (April 16-19) , TTi editor Tom Stone gets a ride in Stella Terra, the solar powered car created at Eindhoven University of Technology. Here, Bart van Beusichem, an electrical engineer who is part of the student team who designed and built the car, explains the concept behind the vehicle and how it works. The car has off-road capability but is also road-legal. On a sunny day the car can drive for 710km.

If this is the same group that made the solar RV I saw recently I'm hopeful that they can bring both vehicles to market. The RV was quite large, and folded down panels from the sides, so it can generate quite a lot of solar power. I can see this car as a pair with the camper, using it's cells to supplement it's own charging.
I'm curious as to how much energy the solar panels provide. The builder says it is totally solar powered, but I'm pretty sure that's with a few days taken to charge up the battery first. As a wild guess might I speculate it's about 10% of the battery per day? That would mean this car is getting around 12.6 km or 8 mi per kWh. That's pretty impressive.
I assume once this is out of the prototype stage the tubular frame will be covered by the interior. As it is, you can see how lightweight it is. I hope to see this in Europe soon.

I'd buy one. The offroading capability is really cool but it would also work as a regular city vehicle for people mainly driving short distances. Park it on the street, no need for chargers.

What is the discoloration (whitening) in the solar panels? Delamination possibly?
