I was a teenager in the 80's and hated most of the 80's music. In my opinion, there were countless "artists" for whom their outfit and blow-dried hairdo in their video were much more important than their music and who hid musically behind walls of reverb, computer sounds and synthesizers. Fortunately there were also a few exceptions like the Police, Dire Straits and Queen. Great stuff.

    • @80s_kid
      @80s_kid Před rokem +2

@@stefan_becker Yes, there were weaker and stronger works. I also think that for example Queen has more value than one or another 80s pop production, but I was thinking more about the entire era and scene (music, movies etc.) because a huge amount of good songs were created at that time and even for the simpler pop productions, attention was paid to the instrumentation and for the good and memorable choruses and melodies. As for music videos, the 80s is the OG era of music videos, see MTV - in this decade (up to about the mid-90s), a music video was very important from a promotional point of view. It is no coincidence that this can also be called the "MTV era". Hair and visual exaggerations can be funny in retrospect (guys with girly hair:)) but I think it's a matter of taste again.

You kinda looked like a big question mark when they came up. Especially Pet shop Boys had many big hits in the eighties. Not that Gabriel was a slouch he had big solo hits and a duet with Kate Bush and was the lead singer in genesis prior to Phil collins.

I was born in 1963 but I have come to the conclusion that the 90s were the best music decade. I've come to have more appreciation of the 80s, but it's easy to look back with rose colored glasses and forget the horrible disco and a lot of synth pop after it became trendy and bland, way too much emphasis on hair spray and eye liner, etc... Suddenly almost every guitarist was playing a PRS and plugging directly into the console with these thin, wimpy guitar tones.
There was some good experimentation in the New Wave stuff, and the good synth pop stuff. The Cars, the Police, Elvis Costello, Prince, and folks like that were doing good stuff. And of course there's always stuff that is completely disconnected from its era, like U2's Joshua Tree and Meat Load's Bat out of Hell.

I'm a teenager of the 80s, and I think I'm like anyone else who grew up in that time... You just took it all for granted, thinking great, new music coming out every month on the radio or the soundtracks in the movies, and endless new releases of albums or tapes to collect, was all just a normal thing, and you thought it would go on forever at that same high level and we could be hearing iconic music into 90's and 2000's and beyond. We never knew the time we were living in was to be a golden era of rock: the 80s combined with 70s and 60s too. Sure there's been GREAT music out in the decades since, I'm not trying to be totally bias, but it just doesn't have such depth and such dynamic range of sounds, and the wide difference between artists breaking new ground today as it did back then. They were on hyper-drive back then, creating such new sounds and beat and rhythms. I'm glad we have it all recorded to be enjoyed for the generations to come. And again, I'm not bias just for my own generation's of music. I liked some of my parent's music too of the 40s and 50s .. some great stuff. But yeah.. nothing beats the 70s and 80s. I think many agree. I hope a new golden age is ahead.. maybe ?

Tbf 83-84 was a hell of a time. To me it had the most bangers out of any of the other years with the songs that were in this video. 80’s in general had many bangers but 83-84 especially. But yea if that’s the case Jump probably should’ve been the most been the most popular for either February or March. Considering girls just want to have fun is March I would say it should be in February and replace Karma Chameleon cause girls just want to have fun is just too iconic. Then again it was technically made before the 80’s and wasn’t written by Lauper (but idk if we would count that).

I was born in the 60s. I was a child in the 70s, when I was introduced to rock music by my older sisters. The I was High School and College in the 80s! I was more of a hard rocker and Hair Metal guy, but 80s music was just an explosion of new sound in every direction. The list of great bands is endless in the 80s.
I feel bad for kids now. It was a great time be alive, just for the music!! Oh, and no cell phones, so you could get away with anything. hahaha

1983-1985: so many killing hits on the radio. What a creative explosion.
Pity it wasn't a particularly happy period of my life.
But the good music helped me get through it all.
Thank you all artists for sharing your passion and talent with us all.

I just turned 58 and some of the best music ever was from the late 60s through the 80s with a few early 90s songs.
So many of these songs bring back memories of various times in my life.
The song HEAVEN by Bryan Adams was my ex-girlfriend and my song. We certainly both moved on with our lives but that song will always hold a special place in my heart.
I'm a brand new subscriber and I'm looking forward to seeing more videos from you.

Impressive how many 80's songs you know. Keep in mind these are only the #1's on the Top 40 list. As far as growing up with 70's and 80's music...as well as some 60's and of course the 90's too; it's like a double edged sword... so many great songs and groups from these decades, then the 2000's onward and mostly just complete crap.

Yeah with the rise of Internet and Smartphone the music quality has decreased massively since the 2000´s.
With some exceptions of course for example The Weeknd Blinding Lights and Dua Lipa´s "Future Nostalgia" Album gave a kind of modern 80´s feeling.

Listening to this, I was just comparing the 70's and the 80's, and I realized that the 80's were specifically a time of _songs._ It was very much a singer's decade. The groups of the 70's often did instrumentals - hell, some bands were mostly instrumental, and if not, they commonly had long instrumental breaks in their songs. This wasn't a thing in the 80's; there was a reaction against the "overblown" and "long-winded" style of 70's rock. New Wave wanted to jettison that, and married the short, sharp ethos of punk with a smooth synth-driven sound and flashy visual style. But yeah, when I think of the 80's, I think of songs. I can't remember off the top of my head any music from that decade that didn't have lyrics and a singer.

Impressive. Reacting to almost every song. Verdy's music aptitude is quite encyclopedic which means she has a remarkable sonic or music-related memory, more likely derived from having paid attention to the timeless pop (=good, hummable) music, like pop royalty Abba or Madonna, she heard while growing up (musical family). Had she been raised during that decade one of her favorite hangout places would have probably been Tower Records, namely the store's listening booth, at the hinge of vinyl and CDs and what brought the 80s sound. Pop(ular) music and the rock of the 1980s will be remembered today as having a “sound” that is somehow unified and generalizable. The '80s sound is tied to the electric piano preset of the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer.

Verdy, October 1989: no Shakira, no Jennifer Lopez. Kaoma is a brazilian band that became famous with this beatiful song "Lambada" (sung in portuguesse), but the original song "Llorando se fue" ("Crying he left" from 1981) is sung in spanish and it belongs to the bolivian band Kjarkas.
