    A message to Ms Sanon " When you do films like Aadipurush, Bachchan Pandey and Shehzada after showing so much potential in Mimi, you automatically loose the privilege of actually making a difference. Mimi should have been followed by more strong female characters. We as audience just hope that Crew and Do Patti revives our perception towards you as a talented actor. Vidya Balan, Tabu ,Kangana don't compromise on that irrespective of box office a film will do whereas Deepika, Priyanka balance it out. So walk the talk because you have the capacity to make a difference with strong female roles and not the ones like housefull 4 and ganapath".

      This sounds antagonist but I agree with this comment! An important aspect of equality in society is knowing your worth and demanding your share of respect (regardless of gender). Kriti’s movie choices post-Mimi don’t really match her capabilities. By accepting pathetic scripts like ganapath, it doesn’t appear she respects herself enough. Having said that, I am sensitive that maybe she’s not getting offered a lot of good scripts like Mimi. Or there may be other reasons. I don’t really know what’s going on behind the scenes, but I hope she learns to treat herself with respect and demand scripts that match her worth as an actress. Because she is truly incredible!

      @@aamirhamza5741 please read my first comment again and realize why kangana was mentioned. You may or may not like her personality but she is a very capable performer and that is an established fact irrespective of how she is as a person. Do you realize that as a producer she has tried to project strong female characters in her films? Yes it's a fact most of them were not upto the mark but at least she's trying to portray female leads in a bigger scale even though most of them didn't turn out to be box-office success. So she backs her instincts without thinking only about numbers. This is the reason I mentioned her name.

    • @shk0705
      @shk0705 Před 8 měsíci +12

      Everyone needs to realise that not ALL great or female oriented films goes to Kriti. She has limited scripts to choose from. She chooses whatever was offered to her, good or bad, flowerpot roles or not. She doesn’t have the opportunities and her choices are limited, which is sad. Hence why the questionable movies she has chosen just to stay relevant in the industry. She definitely did not choose bad movies intentionally. These movies might have been the better ones out of all that was offered. There might even be bad ones we don’t even know and of course she would reject them. And also people need to keep in mind that she signed Bachchan Pandey, Shehzada & Ganapath before Mimi was released. She herself said in an interview that she has no idea that Mimi could be the special role for her where she received awards and accolades (which she deserved tbh)
      Having said that, honestly speaking, she did do justice to all the roles she has acted, whether the movies were hits or flops, or whether her screentime were limited. I really do enjoy her acting and she is progressively improving.
      I am looking forward to The Crew and Do Patti. I really do hope these 2 movies will do well and hopefully could elevate her as one of the top choices for better movies/roles/scripts being offered.
      Kriti in Mimi was terrific and she definitely deserve the National Award. But tbh, I really do feel she has yet to show her full potential as an actor. She just need the right script/role to showcase that. Filmmakers really do need to give her the chance because I genuinely feel she can do and offer more. She’s willing to work hard and push the boundaries. Its evident from how she gained 15kg for Mimi, how she trained nunchuks, kickboxing and dirt bike riding for Ganapath. She’s really a hard worker and passionate in whatever roles she potrays. My favs are Bareilly Ki Barfi, Panipat, Mimi and yes even Adipurush. It was a controversial movie and did badly but her as Sita was commendable. Even I feel she’s the only best thing in the movie.
      Its just unfortunate that people are just going to the cinema for the hero and not the heroine. These perspective and mindset really need to change.
      I’m really rooting for Kriti. Imo she’s one of the best in this generation.

Deepika is at the top of her game but she needs the scripts which is good and if you are forgetting let me tell me Zoya and Karan Johar also said that there is a lack of good scripts in Bollywood..... So what can DP do ?? She has to do side roles in Jawan and pathan to be seen or to be in public eyes .... Now things have changed a lot with ott and other things a lot of women are experimenting ...only with few actresses this can happen now i.e who don't have that much of talent and they know they can't carry the film ... This discussion unfortunately was a let down compared to last year. The nuances were just missing and the clashing opinions weren't really addressed out in the open. A few panelists had strong views (which is great) but not a preceptive, open ear for other people's views. I also didn't like the constant "denial" of data- that it's not true about our set so we don't know. That's like me saying that my husband shares home workload equally so I don't know about unequal sharing prevelant in society. You belong to the ecosystem of films and if you are surprised by such obviously one-sided numbers, that's a bigger problem about not being connected to its reality.
    @FilmCompanion: Would be great if you make the raw data and methodology behind this research available. Would be interesting to see those. Thanks.

    This was such a great discussion! I think one thing that wasn’t quite touched upon though was the idea of motherhood (and the motherhood “tax) I.e. of course a woman wants equal rights and to be equally seen in the workplace but what happens when she gets pregnant? I have to say, I am not well versed on maternity rights in India but there is an element, everywhere, of employers discounting women for this very reason. And then when they do push themselves back into the workforce, what about the unreasonable costs of childcare?

ALIA proved her acting skills from highway not soty...because whether you are a good actor or not, that doesn't gets proved from movies like crew, tbmauj, but from mimi, and bareilly....I am sure alia played an air hostess in badrinath ki dulhania, but she would never agree to the script of crew...also because alia being selfish for showing her acting skills and supremacy, when the credit goes majorly to kareena , then to tabu, there also jitna vi nanad ho, she would not have done it...because alia knows and does such films only where the full credit will go to her, exception was soty, and kapoor and sons

    Anupama, I really hope you read my comment. This is a good “first” discussion of many. It’s missing an important piece though. Diversity and inclusion mean nothing because you dont talk about equity. Expressions like “my bubble is perfect”, “Im a woman so of course I want more women”, etc. are clear indicators that the larger point is completely missed. I also sensed minimization of the statistics by most of the outspoken people in the room. You cannot deny numbers!
    Not knowing one’s privilege, is another important discussion. How can women be born to the best talented fathers so they become the best gaffers? There is an obvious equity piece missing and you need to bring that E into the picture.
    I love that you discussed affirmative action - that is needed in the Indian film industry and proven to be successful (such as in the case of reservations in colleges and other jobs).
    Also, why do the panelists think they should comment on and decide other people’s career choices? I dont think career counseling is needed. These are all intelligent adults who can pick their own careers and dont need to be told “go become a gaffer/cinematographer/spot girl/etc.
    You’re fighting the good fight Anupama, I love that you do this every opportunity you get. May the best woman win! 💕

    Women in creative industry is a deep rooted issue. The statistics are painful but here the question is how many girls/women are encouraged to join creative/film business as crew.
    After crossing point 1 comes the question of how many filmmakers would have women in their crew. Even if they take women in crew does the set behave respectfully??
    On a different note, I felt, everyone in the panel is already trying to bring women into the creative space. It would have been ideal if the panel had filmmakers and production houses who are not doing it or are making films that highlight men, and machoism and ultimately are making crores.
    While interviewing Anupama mam asked that even in marketing women speak less. This exactly shows how the makers look at the film and the fact that even audience want that as these trailers cross X million views.
    Also, women/actresses as Zoya mam rightly said should show interest and confidence to lead a film and say no to films where they are just an element.
    As a viewer, I feel that women's participation/importance increasing in creative space should not be looked at as a mission but as an evolution wherein awareness is created where people know the crafts and opportunities that are there in the industry, making women understand/realize that these opportunities are lucrative and paying, make the makers realize that filmmaking is an art of storytelling that is beyond gender, caste and more. As Zoya mam rightly said, look at the craft without bias and give opportunities on merit. If a woman suits as your DP take her. Don't take someone based on gender.

    Beg to differ with Zoya where she said that women do not want to carry the burden themselves. If I specifically talk about action genre, how many women-led scripts have been made? And even if they have, have they been mounted at the same level as a Pathaan which had zero plot sense. Also, citing the example of Sanjay Leela Bhansali does not make sense to me here. His movies have always carried a certain aesthetic, which follows through when he makes a Bajirao Mastani or a Gangubai. While he deserves due credit, is he not an outlier in a world of War, Pathaan, Tiger Series and any Tiger Shroff movie which comes out there. So, women can carry the load, if we have those movies more frequently and are budgeted at the right amount. Also, the question of women asking, "Who is the male actor" is also true the other way around. Male actors not only ask this question, but sometimes make decisions of females' casting in the movies. :P

There might even be bad ones we don’t even know of. And also people need to keep in mind that she signed Bachchan Pandey, Shehzada, & Ganapath before Mimi was released. Adipurush has the potential to be good but it was handled poorly by the filmmakers. It’s not her fault that the movie did badly.
Her role as Sita was commendable. Even I feel she’s the only best thing in the movie.
    I’m really rooting for Kriti. Imo she’s one of the best in this generation.

    • @tanvimishra18
      @tanvimishra18 Před 8 měsíci +14

      This is a very flawed approach btw--the "best" person for the job is often a combination of factors such as their gender, caste location, ability, sexuality etc. As such, more often than not, the "best" person ends up being someone who comes from immense social privilege (able-bodied, upper caste etc.). This argument is rooted in meritocracy and often used by employers when they don't want to admit to a lack of nuanced understanding of these factors and their interconnectedness. Or when they understand it perfectly well but choose to ignore it anyway.

      @drdev456 Před 8 měsíci +8

      @@tanvimishra18 Yes. Definitely the "best" Person is a combination of all those things you mentioned and much more. So? so what? The best person is the best person. All we can do is encourage people with different permutations and combinations of such factors, to apply for the job but we can't give the job, for example, to an incompetent woman over a competent man or vice versa just because we need representation of a particular sect in the market place. We need to give equal opportunities to people without considering their gender or other factors you mentioned. We truly need to be absolutely unbiased while hiring someone, without swinging pendulum to one of the extremes.

      In a male dominated industry like this, “I only want the best person for the job” is in a way subtly saying , “I support the status quo”. While I agree that having the best crew will yield best results, if you want to change the status quo, you need to take risks and give opportunities to those who haven’t had the chance to showcase their brilliance.
