How would a pulley just all of a sudden become misaligned? I been driving my car for years and all of a sudden this happened...
Do i just need to realign pulleys by tightening bolts? Or is it much more likely that there is an issue with the pulley causing it to wobble and the pulley and/or bearing internally needs to be replaced?

I suspected something like this after replacing the waterpump two weeks ago...when the engine start and the belt spin - it generate some noise...besides it also cause the car to vibrate somehow..and it feels like the belt hitting something all the time when it spin ...despite checking there were nothing stand in the way of the belt except on the waterpump pulley belt is a little off track bulging out on one side while the other fit deeper inside its track...

I only have belt squeal when I am in any gear other than neutral or park and only when at idle. Engine temperature does not matter. Once RPMs come up the squeal goes away. Brand new belt and tensioner and I recently replaced my power steering pump/pulley. The pulley was pressed as far as just a regular bolt and washer went to because that's what I thought was meant to be but could that be wrong? I read that alignment may need to be within 0.5mm but I doubt most shops check that with such accuracy during a pump swap.

How can you fix this at home?

    • @davidwheeler3831

Hi Leonardo, fixing this at home is possible but very difficult without using a laser alignment tool to verify which pulley is out of alignment and whether it is due to a bent accessory bracket, etc. After you have located the pulley that is out of alignment and why, fixing the problem may be solved by replacing the mounting bracket but could also require repositioning the pulley on the accessory shaft. In any event, finding the pulley that is out of alignment is difficult without a laser alignment tool. See this link for how to use one correctly to identify the pulley that is out of alignment and why: czcams.com/video/a5HzocYbKSQ/video.html

Every mechanic I ever go to always returns my car with a misaligned pulley. It seriously pisses me off.

Robert Wilson III I'm paying a mechanic to install a new tensioner, so it better not be misaligned lol

Yup just happened to me with 2 cars, both went in just for oil changes, both came out with pulley mis-alignments (chirping), great way for shops to create more revenue since most people won't have any idea of the cause or how to fix it.

I thought the intro was actually pretty slick. Low budget filming will always be somewhat cheesy.
