  • I assess seven camper options to determine which one is the most affordable, and does the best job of enabling you to go anywhere, camp for free, be comfortable, safe, and secure, and prepared for anything.

I bought a 2005 Suboverland directly from the company. They're in Twin Falls, Idaho. I chose the base model, so I could build it out myself based on my needs (it's a full-time camper). The price was $6000 in 2020 before inflation hit us like a Mack truck.

Thanks for sharing this info. I don't have to use my 4WD often, so good to know 2WD has gotten you where you need to go!

No matter what you choose in one way or another it gets expensive.

We will soon have 4 Drivers in our household, and already have a minivan (which I camp in) and a large truck. We are looking at getting a suburban or Yukon XL as a 3rd vehicle. And, we just ordered a Casita fiberglass travel trailer. This old mama wants a camping / nomadic lifestyle so badly! When / if my life changes I will be ready!

Great comparison. Which option would you go with if you're intending to travel with your partner for several months around the country?

Thanks Ben. Well, we have actually been checking out VW Eurovans lately for my wife, but when I fully retire and start traveling more, it will likely be a small class C or a large class B. I will always have a Suburban as an option for short trips to hard to reach places.

Where did you find built out SUVs for that price? They're all close to or above $20k where I'm looking. I'm considering selling my current crossover and buying a 4wd van to build but a ready to go one would be less expensive at those levels than doing what I want myself/hiring help bc I can't actually do it.

Well AprilDawn, they don’t come up for sale very often - I have only seen a few over the past couple years, but they were around $10k. Keep in mind, used car prices are crazy right now, so even a 9th gen Suburban that is not built out may fetch $8-10k.

@@SuburbanCamping it hadn't even occurred to me prices might be a bit inflated like used cars are right now 😆 I'll factor that in since thankfully I'm at least 6mo from starting to actually get set up, let alone get on the road. I'm hoping all the people who jumped on the bandwagon will start to drop out and I'll be able to buy something for cheap

That's Suboverland from Twin Falls, Idaho. I have one that I bought directly from them in 2020 before inflation hit. I chose the base package so that I could do the build out myself with my own design, and it was $6000. Today that same base model might be $8000 or so. I picked mine up 2-3 months after putting down a deposit, but that's because they didn't have to do all the woodworking and such.
The waiting time for a fully built-out Suboverland is probably about a year or more. The cost used to be around $12,000 for a really nice one (newer year, less miles). Now I figure they're upwards to $15k because of recent inflation. You can contact them for more information at their website. They also have a youtube channel.
Grady and his family and team are great people. I really enjoyed my experience with them and I *love* my beefed-up Suburban. 🤗
