Alex Ovechkin's 49 Goals In 2017-18 (HD)

  • Maybe switching back to CCM was the secret. 2017-18 ended up being one of if not arguably the best seasons of Alex Ovechkin's career. We all know how it ended - a Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe trophy, and the (undeserved) choker label gone forever. But don't let the end of season hardware distract you from the Great 8's incredible achievements in the 82 games before April. After a 33-goal "down" year in 2016-17 Ovechkin, at age 32, responded with a 49-goal year - 1 shy of his 8th 50-goal season and the second time in his career he fell fewer than 5 short (here's an incredible stat for you: just 5 goals separate him from being tied with Gretzky and Bossy for the most 50-goal seasons in NHL history). Those 49 goals led the NHL, not only tying Bobby Hull for the most seasons leading the league in goals (7), but also making him the oldest player since Phil Esposito in 1974-75 (age 33) to lead the NHL in goals. A large reason for that increase was that he doubled his even-strength goal production from the prior year, scoring 32 at even strength. He also led the NHL with 19% of his team's goals, and led the Capitals in points for the 11th time in his career. 2017-18 was about silencing critics, ending frustration, and as usual, scoring a whole lot of goals.

    That last game against NJ he was so close getting the hat trick for 50. I recall he had a late breakaway that the goalie made a nice save on. Ovi is insane, no one shoots it like him. He may not be scoring as crazy highlight goals as he was scoring 10 years ago, however nearly every goal he scores is sick as hell. Most entertaining hockey player I have ever watched. No one stands out on the ice like Ovi does with his skill, power, physicality, & speed. He just has such a presence while he is on the ice. I would bet that the broadcasters say his name far more than that of any other player during games.

    I feel very blessed as a hockey fan because I've seen #99 work behind the net, Kocur's right hand, the KLM line, Lemieux on the breakaway, and Ovi snipe from the left circle.

    3:38 A goal like this I can only assume can be scored at all, no matter who scores it, because of a lifelong experience at playing hockey. The awareness and skill it takes to place this shot where you want as you are turning basically 360°, amazing.

    Watched the game when he scored 2 goals to get 49. Had a breakaway to get number 50 but it just went wide. They were trying everything in their power for him to get 50. So close but the real prize is more important. Bring home the Cup!🏆

      Anthony Apodaca if I remember, didn't the Devils not pull their goalie so Ovi couldn't get number 50

    • @averagefella
      @averagefella Před 6 lety +4

      JJ Comet Cat It's true. No team wants an elite player like Ovi to reach a milestone on them, just like when Ovi got his 600th goal against the Jets lol. I'm sure Vezina nominee Connor Hellebuyck was not pleased, especially when he allowed two goals from the Great 8 in that game. Either way, the Devils did stop him at 49 but Ovi got the last laugh in June 🤘

      @pena380 Před 3 lety +1

      @@averagefella he got 51 season after that. But then again in last season he got 48 goals in 68 games... NHL didn't want him to get the record of most 50 goal season maybe he would gotten 50 without suspension in one game... This season no chance to get 50 cause they only play 50 games. Ovechkin is also year older so it's nlt getting easier. His average this season is 0,50 so is he declining? He has more assist than usually thought.

    Sickest one-timer. Later on in his career he’ll still have that. Plenty of 40+ goal seasons still in the tank, I anticipate he will surpass Mr Hockey but fall shy of The Great One.

      Ove Will Beat gretzky

    • @pena380
      @pena380 Před 3 lety

      @@e.t926 yeah if he wants to play long enough. Now it's harder thought cause of covid. He would gotten 60 goals last season without it being cancelled. Which would make it look easy. But this season will hurt him even more he has lost 30 games this season 4 of those ecause stupid suspension. He has only 5 this season at the moment. He needs 184 more now which looks hard. This season he probably end up around 30-35. So maybe he is 152 goals behind after this season and then he needs 3× 50+ goal season to get it. But if last season was not cancelled and this season would been played normally. He would gotten 60 last season and around 50 this season. So then he would been only 127 goals behind. 25 goals does not look that big but in this case it can be. Maybe he gets 50 next season but then he is still more than 100 goals behind so then that 25 goals matters if he start to decline. If he gets 30 and 20 it's still 50+ goals. In this scenario he gets it if he wants to play long enough but he maybe does not want to and goes to back KHL. I think he will get the record but that debends if he wants it.

    • @dl3988
      @dl3988 Před 3 lety

      @@pena380 Totally agree it really depends on whether Ove wants the record badly enough. 5 more 30+ seasons and he should pass Gretzky. But the fact that we're even considering the possibility of someone playing in the modern low-offense NHL passing Gretzky is nuts to me. It's like someone in modern baseball coming within touching distance of Cy Young's win total.
      I just checked and Ove has scored nearly 300 more goals than his top rival Crosby (who's admittedly had some injuries in his career)! Truly in a class of his own...

    • @pena380
      @pena380 Před 3 lety

      @@dl3988 yeah now he needs 164 more goals to tie it. But his 30 goal season streak may end this season cause he was just injured but will see if he plays today islanders. 24 goals in 43 games would equal 47 goals in 82 games so in normal season he can still get 50. He has dealed already with some injuries in this season so I think he will do only better next season if he is healthy. I think he gets like 28-30 goals this season if he miss games now cause of the injury. 160 goals is lot to ask but if anybody can do it's him. I think Gretzky scored his 730 goal at 31 and Ovi did it at 35. But every year since Ovi turned 30 he has scored lot more than Gretzky at same age. Gretzky also started playing NHL at 18 and Ovi at 20. If Ovi would started at 18 he would be at 800 goals right now.
