Remixing “The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet” Using ONLY the Original Audio Recordings

  • I recently discovered all the drama and cult following that people have for discovering this unknown song from Europe in the 80s.
All the recordings that we have of it are quite bad, having been processed through tape, vinyl, radio, cassette, digital, and digital again.
They’re all mono and are very muddy.
So I took up the challenge of remixing the song as best as I could.
I had to artificially create the audio stems using various software and AI processes, and then further develop the audio tracks with Izotope RX audio restoration software.
While it was very very difficult to get the parts individually separated, it worked ok and I now have a decent stereo mix.
    Hope you enjoy

Good work! Some of the other mixes/restorations have moments of clarity, or one area of focus, but for my ears this seems to be the best "overall package" restoration.

listening to it at several different speeds on several different "remastered" recordings, I hear it as:
    like the wind
you came here running [inferred meaning: your life was off to a (very?) good start]
face the consequence of living [inferred meaning: the consequence of living is dying]
    there's no space
    there's no tomorrow
there's no sent communication / there's no sense for new division [different recordings make the words sound different]
[inferred meaning 1: you died (no tomorrow) and we can't communicate with each other]
[inferred meaning 2: no space/no time = just now, live in the moment; live in harmony ("no sense for new division"); could also refer to E/W Germany or E/W Berlin divisions]
check it in, check it out
the sun goes down in time [inferred meaning: we all die eventually]
    have it all anyway
in the subways of your mind [inferred meaning: regardless, we can imagine a different reality]
    like the wind
you're gone in summer [inferred meaning: you died in the prime of life, if spring=youth and winter=elderly]
let a smile be your companion [inferred meaning: rest in peace]
    there's no place
has there's no sorrow [that has no sorrow]
hear the young and restless grieving [inferred meaning: nowhere/no one is exempt from the sorrow of death]
check it in, check it out
the sun goes down in time
    have it all anyway
in the subways of your mind
    [instrumental bridge]
check it in, check it out
the sun goes down in time
    have it all anyway
in the subways of your mind
    OUTRO
check it in, check it out
it's the summer blues [inferred meaning: because of premature death]
tear it in, tear it out
it's the real you [inferred meaning: you were torn away from your friends/family]

those are some very dark lyrics

    • @user-us1cu4mm9t
      @user-us1cu4mm9t Před 6 dny

I think you got it mostly correct. I have only a few points of divergence from your lyrics:
      (1) Instead of "the sun goes down in time", I hear "the sun goes every time";
      (2) Instead of "have it all anyway", I hear "paranoid anyway".
When it comes to point (1) I can kinda hear "down in time" if I squint my ears, but in (2) it's really hard to hear "have it all", so (1) may be right and (2) wrong.
      Another minor points:
      (a) In "like the wind" it's hard not to hear "blind the wind", but since that does not make much sense, "like the wind" is probably the correct alternative.
      (b) Instead of "face the consequence of living", I hear "take the consequence of living" which is less good English, but basically amounts to the same thing.
As for the rest of the lyrics I think you're probably correct. In fact this is the best transcription of the song I've found so far!

I think it would be at the end, 'Tear it in, tear it down.' Referring to the Berlin Wall, was still up and was a big problem in 1982-1984, the time this was released.

    [Verse 1]
    Like the wind
    You came here runnin'
    Take the consequence of livin'
    There's no space
    There's no tomorrow
    There's no sense communication
    [Chorus]
Check it in, check it out, or the sun will never shine
A long dirty way in the subways of your mind
    [Verse 2]
    Like the wind
    You're goin' somewhere
Let a smile be your companion
    There's no place
    And there's no sorrow
In a young and restless dreamer
    [Chorus]
Check it in, check it out, or the sun will never shine
A long dirty way in the subways of your mind
    [Instrumental Bridge]
    [Chorus]
Check it in, check it out, or the sun will never shine
A long dirty way in the subways of your mind
    [Outro]
Check it in, check it out, it's the summer blues
Tear it in, tear it out, it's the real excuse
Check it in, check it out, it's the summer blues
Tear it in, tear it out, it's the real excuse
Check it in, check it out, it's the summer blues
Tear it in, tear it out, it's the real excuse
Check it in, check it out, it's the summer blues

Check it in, check it out, it's the summer blues

Id you use the full recordings of the cassette this would be greatly improved on the effect of the noise removal.
And if you have time you should use references like the original songs vs the taped ones to make a pure guess or estimate on that one unknown song in the track.
I created a versions with just replaced songs of their originals except the one section containing the mysterious song known as tms.
If someone could make this version based on the rest of the track I'd be impressed, can you make this version also?

    • @jtmotenz
      @jtmotenz  Před 3 měsíci

What do you mean by “original songs vs taped songs”?
Also what full recording of the cassette are you talking about?
I’m always up for improving it, I’m just having a hard time understanding what you’re explaining.

    • @GuyFizzAnything-xm5kb

@@jtmotenz You would pull up the high quality versions of the songs ripped vinyl's on CZcams or you would buy them and make a new list of those songs in the exact same order on the tape.
I'm referring to the tapes Darius had made.
I think we should use the full tape to guess on what the original song might've sounded like before getting record on whatever tape it was playing on.
By training it, with the data of how different the rest of the song are on the tape, compared to the actual songs.

@@jtmotenz Yeah, the AI would understand the gist of the tape warble and flutter, and would be better suited to make an estimate of the songs actual speed.
