  • My first ever Grasshopper! 😁 (Although my boys had Grasshoppers many years ago.)
It's hard to think of a better kit to give a young person just getting into RC for the first time. Cheap, simple to build, robust and plenty of tuning opportunities. Even for a veteran builder, the Grasshopper offers a great blank canvas on which to customize your RC buggy. And they are a total hoot to drive too. 😎😁
The buggy is completely stock (though I do have a sport tune motor to go in at some point).
The body is painted - in Matte white!
I hope you enjoy, and as always, thanks for watching!

I think both you and Matteo (from Matteo's RC movies) make the best RC running videos on YT. 😎

They are fun buggies and I love driving mine! It is one I drive the most. I loved the slow motion beside the car shots to be able to see the front shock shafts working up and down in the mounts!! Very cool to see it working like that, you miss it most of the time when you are driving it. Thanks for all the time you put into making these great, entertaining videos!!!

Thanks as always for taking the time to comment. 🙂You're right about the slow motion stuff. Truth be told, one of the reasons I enjoy shooting and editing videos is just for the opportunity to really see the buggies suspension and vehicle dynamics, something you can't fully appreciate while driving.
I thought exactly the same thing about the 'hopper front suspension - when you're building it, you'd be forgiven for thinking it is going to be pretty ineffective, but the slo-mo reveals just how well it is working! 👍

Highly recommended! For the price you can't go wrong and they bring a smile to your face. My local circuit has Hopper themed races and they are an absolute hoot! 😁 Thanks!

Great capturing of this yet again amazing evolution of Tamiya's strange but legendary rear axle mounted motor drive. I watch in awe your slowmotion bits how the Grasshopper 2 performs, and I notice some improvements over the Hornet and the original Grasshopper. But I still cannot understand this particular design of Tamiya. How did they imagine the rear suspension to work? Did you put some weights on rear of the chassi, or the body, perhaps you use a heavier battery? This one certainly has a less bouncy rear than the previous models of similar character.
Have you tried Mad Bull ? Another variant of the 'RAMMD' but with a slight twist, it has a pivot joint between its rear module and the rest of its chassi. However its wheels and tires are so big/heavy that they dominate the complete physics of the car :(

Thank you! My Grasshopper II is completely stock, but I do run heavier NiMH batteries in my buggies. They may help to reduce bounce at the rear end.👍 Tamiya's vintage suspension designs were often somewhat...unusual. 😁 And a lot of times didn't really do much. I always wondered with Tamiya, which came first with their buggies: Name or design? Did they design the buggy, realise all the suspension did was hop over the bumps and then name is Grasshopper. Or start with the name first, and then design the suspension to match? 😁 🤔
I've never owned a Mad Bull but as I recall, back when I was a kid my brothers and I would mod our Grasshoppers and Hornets by mounting Monster Beetle tires. 😁

@@KaiCityRC Wow, monster beetle wheels on a Grasshopper? Then you made your own "Mad Bull" even before Tamiya thought of it ;) Mad Bull is practically just that.

As I recall, it took forever to start moving, didn't stop when it was and the battery died even quicker than usual! 😁
