I don't agree with the licking part. My dog does lick me when I put lotion on or I'm eating, but she also licks me when she's being affectionate. When I tell my dog I love her and say kiss kiss, she acts all goofy and gives me a kiss. I don't care what you say, it's a kiss from my dog. LOL

I've had many dogs through the years, and in my 60 yrs on this planet, I have come to the realization that my dogs licked my face, hands, head, neck, etc., for a multitude of reasons, including, but not limited to: showing affection, welcoming you home after work or being away, to get whatever sweat or salty residue might be on my skin, trying to get my attention (probably to be let outside), waking me up if something is happening in or outside our home. There's nothing "NOT cute" about it. I loved all my dogs, and I know they loved me, 'cause they would get up from where they were and move closer to me no matter what room I'm in. Begs the question if it is not affection, have you ever seen a dog lick the face or hands of somebody that they dog didn't like? Of course not.

There’s no question dogs give licks as affection. My chihuahua loves to climb up and just blip the end of my nose. Same spot, multiple times. There’s not sweaty salt there. And then she wants to tuck her head into my chest.
My heeler will climb in bed with me and kiss the back of my bald head, ritually, in the morning just before wake up. THAT one may be enjoying a bit of salt taste, but when he does that, he rests his whole head on my neck and cuddles. There’s definitely affection there.
There’s not a one-size-fits-all answer to these questions. Dogs are living and loving beings with their own thoughts as varied as people.

He also has many doggie behaviors I asked him why do dogs like our face? He said many reasons but he thinks the main one is they are showing love. When I look my dog in the face an talk to him in a loving voice and pet him, he ALWAYS responds by licking my face and only my face, for a long time and wags his tail and seems very happy. It's true that there are many reasons dogs might lick their owners, and it's not always easy to pinpoint just one. Dogs can lick for affection, to show submission, to get attention, or even because they like the taste of our skin. It might also be a way for them to communicate their needs, like hunger.
Paying attention to the context when your dog licks you can give you more clues. Is it close to their mealtime, or are they trying to get your attention for a cuddle? Each dog is unique, and their behavior can vary. You're right that more research can help us understand our furry friends better, but sometimes, it's also about knowing your own dog's personality and habits.
In any case, it's important to look at the whole picture and understand the context rather than relying on one explanation. Your insights are valuable and remind us to always question and learn more about our beloved pets. 🐾😊

I'm quite sure the licking is a message of "I'm no threat to you, please don't hurt me, I don't want any trouble right now." but its easy for humans to put it in their own terms and just say its kisses or affection which is fine too, and natural. But at it's core it's like how a horse foal will gape it's mouth at another adult "please don't hurt me, I'm just a baby."

Dogs lick for multiple reasons. They may smell something that interests them on your body like food on your mouth, lotion, or another animals scent that you just rubbed. But dogs also show affection and expressions through their mouths. For instance if they’re hot they’ll pant because that’s how they cool down, or if they want your attention they’ll grab your hand with their mouth or play bite to tell you they want to play. Dogs use their mouths for many purposes, including licking because their tastebuds are super enhanced and they taste 10 times greater than humans, plus your scent and taste is a way to them remembering you.

She became really annoyed by his behaviour and brought him over to veterinarian for a neurological examination.
