#Chile #History
There is one glaring mistake at 2:55. The origins of the War of the Pacific can be a bit confusing. But here is what happened chronologically:
Bolivia increased taxes on nitrate exporting entreprises (which were virtually all Chilean and based in the Atacama region, the littoral) in 1878. Chilean entreprises (notably the Compania de Salitres y Ferrocaril de Antofagasta based in Antofagasta) refused to pay it. Chile stated that this measure was a breach of the Treaty of 1874 which included a provision stipulating that Bolivia was not to increase taxes on Chilean businesses in Bolivia for 25 years. Bolivia stated that it was an internal matter and that Chile shouldn't intervene. Basically tensions escalated and the Antofagasta company was supposed to be auctioned off on February 14th 1879. On that day Chilean troops disembarked at Antofagasta and seized it. Bolivia formally declared war on Chile on the 27th of February 1879. Between that date and the 5th of April 1879 Peru intervened diplomatically and attempted to stop the tensions. Here I have to mention the secret alliance between Peru and Bolivia which dated from 1873. Basically while discussions were going on the Chilean ambassador in Lima sent alarming notes to Santiago claiming that the Peruvians were just trying to gain time and arm themselves and that they were not genuine in their attempt at negotiation. The Peruvian diplomat was asked if such a secret treaty existed and if so to proclaim neutrality or return to Lima. Thus, Chile declared war on the 5th of April 1879 on both Bolivia and Peru.
I would recommend to go more in depth on that subject. There are still some discussions surrounding the secret treaty between Bolivia and Peru (did the Chilean government know about it or to what extent ? Chilean historians, for example Gonzalo Bulnes, usually maintain that Chile had no knowledge of this treaty until April 1879. Thus, from a Chilean perspective this seemed more like a defensive war. However, Peruvians and Bolivians perceive Chile as an aggressor and view this secret treaty as a legitimate defensive Alliance). But in order to have a fuller picture you have to also include the early border disputes between Chile and Bolivia which got amplified by the discovery of guano and nitrate deposits in the Atacama region as well as the internal political situation of all three countries. Basically it's simple but complex at the same time lol.
Also, why would Bolivia and Peru declare war on Chile suddenly? Most guano and salitre deposits were located in Atacama and Tarapaca anyway. Their internal political situations left much to be desired. As for as the armed forces are concerned things didn't look bright for Peru and Bolivia and Chile too. But I won't get into details about that here otherwise my comment will be way too long.

As a Chilean student studying for the equivalent of the SATs I appreciate this English explanation so much! Spanish makes no sense to me lmao.
Hello I’m Chilean. You forgot something. Argentina stole a large part of southern Chile from us. Chile had more territory before the Pacific War. They stole that territory from us when Chile had its entire army fighting against Peru and Bolivia. That is why Chile later helped England for the war between England and Argentina in the Malvinas/falklands war in 1982
buena esa
Nice
Sabes mas que yo y eso que soy chileno🇨🇱
i feel like Schneider deserves a mention
You jumped pretty fast between Spanish abandonment of 5 cities to Spanish Chile in 18th century
Allende didn’t commit suicide, he was killed by the military, good video overall though! I like the upbeat summary
You are wrong, even if he committed suicide, he himself had said many times that he would never be like those presidents of banana countries who give up easily. In addition, the Chilean army is very professional, assassinating Allende would have been shooting himself in the feet, they had it more than clear... I am Chilean, that's why I know the story well.
@@jonathansaavedra8135 banana counties? What type of talk is this?
You could bring up the 2011 autopsy to back up your claim, but nothing you have stated here is evident.

Caution with liar Mr History in explanation about the war Perú Bolivia Chile is very false. Chile declared war for tax raising on products from Bolivia (salitre and guano) but the real reason was take territory of Peru and Bolivia. Abuse, brute force. Agreements were taken under military superiority and defeat. I'm Mexican.

Thanks. Chile is no Peru
hey! Chilean here
just to say that the way you showed the dictatorship of Pinochet is gross at best and pinochetista at worse
3:53 that was a lie Pinochet used to say on tv to show Allende as a coward
labeling pinochet's opposers as just "communists" is just... wrong, he was a fucking murderer
also, you talked about how chile's one of the richest countries in the Americas, without mentioning the fact that it is also, one of the most unequal countries in the Americas, and how thats a HUGE factor on the 2019 protests, not just the costs of living
i know this video is supposed to be simple and quick but oversimplifying facts like this is just wrong
Peru and Bolivia only declared war against Chile nvaded Bolivian territories in 1879 withou a formal declaration of war from Chile 🤷🏻♂️....by the way, the English support to Chiole during ths connflict is still in debate, most probably the crown's nterests were so big that England do helped Chilenean government during this conflict....we all do know England Imperal ways🤷🏻♂️.
