Hi do you ever conduct blind listening testing?
Great post - thanks! Agree that people should try both digital and vinyl and see what they prefer. For me, I like having both and probably listen 90% digital / 10% vinyl
The system of Jay is so precise, exacting and analytical that it exposes the shortcomings and flaws of digital audio and does not mask it. On the other hand, analog audio is an organic, natural simple process and a decent system, (doesn't have to be expensive) and has a beautiful sound. But digital audio is super convenient. Well made AAD cds sound very good.
the secondary distortions are different between analog and digital. Human hearing didn't evolve to process digital audio artifacts , so the illusion of hearing has a different result from the two sources.
DSD is the next step in digital. MoFi and other high-end audio media providers often use DSD in their mastering process. What does Jay's Audio Lab think of DSD audio? Please do some reviews of DSD recordings. I bet many of your viewers would be very interested in that.
Jay, I think you got things turned around here. A turntable has many ways to be setup. Digital playback is literally plug and play. What is there to “tune” with digital.😅
You’re trying to take the edge off the presentation. Digital hardness, bright-ish?
Cannot wait for more high quality integrate amplifier introduction from Jay!!😁
You and me both!
one has got to be a true believer to support the concept that a power cord will effect anything more than what sound you expect the brain to report after adding such a visual effect.
Gryphon finally heard your praises on their amazing amps you've owned. Congrats on the Gryphon 333 tryout! Cant wait to hear your review on it. I currently own an old Gryphon Diablo 250, warm sounding amp. Hoping to get your recommendation on a US receptacle, US 3 prong & IEC plugs.
Hello Jay. I really like your current channel. The thought of another channel for more budget minded people is interesting. Keep up the great work.
Thanks! Will do!
I have a very good analog rig and about 3,500 records. It’s true that some records do sound much better than digital. Overall, in my opinion, far more music I stream sounds better than vinyl. I have no problem
listening to streaming for hours.
Just keep doing what you are doing and what you really like and people will come in the end....or not and so be it.
Sorry Jay gotta call BS on vinyl . Coming from a family who worked at a pressing plant for London records and seeing first hand the quality control or more like lack of quality leads me to think that the audiophile Industry has no idea what good sound is . Firstly I can assure you that vinyl was the streaming of that time . Vinyl was the most convenient and cheapest way to mass produce music at that time . QUALITY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT !!!! VERY FEW PEOPLE HAD ANY IDEA ABOUT ELECTRONICS AND SOUND QUALITY ! Sound quality took off in the 1960" a bit then more in the 1970"s and so on . I grew up with vinyl and when digital came along 99 percent of the people went along with it . Why ? Because it was easy . Same reason that people liked vinyl when it first came out . Is digital better yes ! Is streaming better again yes ! Not because it sounds better . What sound are you talking about ? I still listen to vinyl and if you put aside the fact that you are " a better audiophile " vinyl is not better . The reason why digital and streaming is better is because of accessibility . Sounds better ? NO Looks better NO ! Vinyl looks a lot better . I understand someone of your age group being glamoured by Vinyl but older people from my age group should know better . Jay you are living in the golden age of audiophile's and you are in a spokes person for new technology . Enjoy because there is no better time than right now to listen to music .
@marclajeunesse3890,
I dont think you have heard a good analog setup , please note not expensive , i do mean a good setup analog “System “ ...
Sound is subjective so what you think a good set up is might not be what someone else thinks a good set up is . What can't be debated is that the older technology is inferior . I have nothing against vinyl but it had it's time . @@audiohertz2341
Great show. It must feel good when high-end manufacturers acknowledge your channel and your knowledge and want you to demo their product. Of I go analog where do I start lol.
I appreciate that!
Dad played Reel to Reel 70's -80s when I was a kid. I loved that sound. I was cassettes then CDs. I'm still that guy today.
Jay, I love your channel. But I’d be very interested in a 2nd channel for “affordable hifi”. Go for it!! I’ll never be able to own this kind of gear but it’s not the reason I watch your channel. Your reviews and experience with “mid-fi” components would interest me very much.
Thank you
Love your comment on digital vs vinyl. I was going to upgrade my digital and thanks to you I realize the digital bug. My analog is 10 years old and still blows me away.
Glad to help!
Anyone with working ear drums can hear the difference between digital and vinyl Analog playback .. Enjoy what you like but as you grow in your listening experience most will sound like Jay and less not forget Jay was a Digital only guy and never ever considered analog before , his opinion is now consistent with most digital only guys exposed to good analog with a large format rig ..!
Regards
Very very good points Jay about digital. You just mapped out my last year with my system. People have no idea how much easier life is in the analog world. Great content Jay.
No doubt!
Gryphon Diablo 333 into 8ohm, the devil's number into 4ohm (...)
An aspect of vinyl that you have mentioned before is that all that trouble you go through putting a record on? But then you sit and enjoy for around a half hour!
While that convenient streaming selection is often changed after a minute or 2! You are far less apt to sit and listen to digital for an extended time. You are not going to just get immersed in music for a period of time, nothing touches vinyl!
I fully agree! I can’t recall the last time I’ve listened to a full album while streaming
Hi! Jay!! How've you been since you did the high audio show??
There was some nice pieces there. The speakers that went for 270,000$ were the best I heard.
Anyway, on the records that I don't play anymore, there's one aspect that no matter what your not gonna get ride of.
That's the sound of the needle on the record it self. The nature of the beast.
Records to me are like Danger!!!
One little something gets in them grooves , and it's around reference level you can hurt a speaker. That's y I don't play them. As for digital, ambient bass, or something on those lines is nice.
Don't give up the other job. Just post a video of different cuts from different artists, played thru your really cool gear you got.
Would love to hear The Band, or
Offenbach, so us not so much as the level of equipment you got, so WE can hear it.thankx.
Well said 👌 Though I would claim, that in order to beat a DSD1024 resolution sample, playing on a decent setup system, you'll need one hell of a turntable/mc cartridge/RIAA 😅
i was pretty shocked that audirvana could configure my denafrips dac. once it did that ive left it alone ever since and havent had to tinker. the denafrips is crazy forgiving and an easy listen but for some people it might be missing the precision some people love. for me when i put on music its like ive already started drinking 🤣
What do you think about DEVIALET EXPERT 1000 PRO DUAL MONO compared to the Boulder?
Vinyl cannot produce high frequency. Digital processing full frequency perfectly. Your amplification section is perfect.
Vinyl can easily produce signals over 40Khz, which was required for CD4. CDs can't get even half way there! But facts and stuff...
Pure silver conductors can open up the tube sound in both ways... people are too ignorat of the properties of good quality silver cables.
Lol..
Spot on comments on digital journey
Thanks
Can’t wait for Your review of the 333
The Krell 300i for around 10k is stupid good.
My favorite integrated is the Mola Mola Kula. it is amazing and starts at 15.8k without a dac. I prefer it over a few 35-50k integrated amps I have heard. It is just next level Class D that is so perfect. It bulldozes needing to use an old ass transformer and high dollar cap technology that is 60 years old with it's proprietary switching power supply. I also heard the Mola Mola on cables in the 18-20k range...So yes you will have to spend big money on cables.
Jay, I am told by friends that the Gryphon 333 is all around Better and Faster with more Bass Control than the Original Diablo! I hope you can Confirm that, and I will be anxiously awaiting your Evaluation!💪 Thanks Again for your Dedication to HiEnd Audio!
Thanks for the info!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Same to you!
Jay - really eager to hear your thoughts on the Class A Aavik 880 range. They have an integrated as well. Especially in comparison to Gryphon
Let's see if I got this correct. Digital is the disease, and analog is the cure. But we would rather peddle pain killers than cure the problem at it's root, lest our neuroses (and side gigs) need another place to roost. FYI the 333 made its US debuts last week at The Sound Environment in Omaha on the 16th and Kyomi Audio in Chicago on the 17th. Reports are it sounds excellent, and has the new Gryphon sound like the Apex, Mephisto and Essence. I'll be curious whether is will be better than Essence separates. I''m guessing it might have better bass.
Really looking forward to the Gryphon 333 in your hands and your thoughts.
Cool
When will you be receiving your new Borresen speakers?
I think the person who suggested testing much cheaper gear (so as to boost ratings/viewership) has completely missed the point of this channel. I know I can safely speak for most of your viewers when I write that we are here because your channel represents one of the only opportunities we will ever have to see this sort of gear evaluated properly. Thank you! Keep going, and we will always be with you.
Irony is though that by using speakers he can’t biamp or go active with said ultra high end gear may not be fully exploited and/or may well provide an absolute limit to what he can achieve with the gear.
Great point!
Jay, you’re spot on with the digital vs analog. I’ve been listening to music since before digital formats were available to the public, but have purchased vinyl and CD/SACD. The vinyl section of my setup cost 1/3 of the digital, yet given the right pressing of vinyl compared to the digital offering (same mastering engineer/same series etc) of the exact same release, the analog is bigger, wider and much more expansive. I have some Blue Note Tone Poets and Analog Productions releases on vinyl that make my transport and DAC sound anemic.
Cheshire Audio believes vinyl beats digital of similar quality.
That's why cd still rocks
If you did more affordable AND ultra high end? You will be a god of sound reproduction
Better: Skip pre-amp/integrated entirely, and spend all money on the DAC and Stereo/Mono Amp. dCS never uses a pre-amp on its DAC (every). They color the sound.
Jay, how do you compare the Lampizator Horizon vs MSB Select II? Which one do you prefer?
Audio Music DAC/1 might be better.
ilike your views on analaog ; maybejeff rowland will release another integrted
Some audiophile enthusiast channels "start over". I think all we need here is 4K CZcams content and some nice Sony cameras.
333? Reminds of Mark Levinson. Accidental? Doubtful.
As Neil Young said..Analog is the universe, digital is not.
I don't agree that analog needs less tweaking than digital. I think Jay knows much less about it. Die hard analog fans know the truth about TT, arm, cartridge, phono, vibration, tracking, pressing, cleaning, etc, etc, etc. For many digital is simpler than analog. And yes, since the mid 80s most all music is mastered digitally anyhow, so you can't escape it even if you play vinyl. Saying different is delusional and misguided.
Jay have you heard this kind of stupid statement before? (Audiogon post)
Anyone has a reference system where amplification is SS ?
I never heard of audiophiles whose reference system had transistor amplification. It is always tubes. But maybe there are exceptions.
Tubes amplification is key to success. I swapped ultra highend transistor for quality tube integrated and couldnt be happier.
Vinyl is dumb in a modern world 🌎
Whatever floats ur boat, don't care 😮
Except if You already own a big collection from the past.
Jay, what You do is not ultra highend. Transistor gear is trash, except: Spectral & Nagra & Gryphon. Try tube integrated: Audio Note Meishu Tonmeister Silver signature. Its much more musical than anything else You tried. Why are You scared of musicality?
So, digital sucks and analog is wonderful. The end. Are you talking about PCM only? How about DSD files recorded from analog master tapes?
Lol … He didn’t say that
@michaelgarnett1372 not word for word, but that is what I took away from it. I guess I got a little disappointed and a bit angry hearing that. I probably should have worded it differently.
Audio Note plays Red book 16bit 44khz on a much more musical scale than any dsd trickery is done by others. Best digital is still not there yet... but Audio Note Masc R2R dac will change eveything. It takes 2-3more years to develop. Until than Audio Note Dac 5 & fifth element is the reference.
@@scottbennett3119 dont sweat it have a great holiday weekend
@michaelgarnett1372 thanks, you too.
