P-47s: How come we did all the dirty works on ground targets for the army and those damn mustangs always got the credit in movies?
Hawker Hurricane(sipping tea with a British smile): First time?
Underrated comment!!!!!!!!!
Fun fact: before the Mustang became the Mustang, it was the North American A-36 Apache. Great maneuverability at low altitude, and found great success in 1942-43 as a ground attacker and dive bomber, though could be tricky to fly for a novice pilot, and was eventually replaced, primarily by the Thunderbolt. A new engine, the removal of the dive bomb brakes, and other modifications resulted in the P-51A Mustang. The rest as they say is history, though it should also be noted that by the Korean War, the P-51, like other high performance but now obsolete prop aircraft, found a new life as a ground attacker, where it served well. So you could say that it came full circle in a way.
@@hhale it was actually the called the mustang before A-36. It was an entirely new plane the U.S. developed for the British. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, the U.S. kept alot of Mustangs they had yet to send over seas. They swapped the 4 20mm hispano for 6 .50 cal and fitted dive brakes because the plane gained too much speed in a dive. This model was given the name of A-36 Apache. Over the course of the war this plane would evolve into the P-51.
Steven Spielberg loved Mustangs. See also “Empire of the Sun”. But it’s true, they were not a ground attack aircraft, and would have been wasted in that role, when they could be shooting down FW 190’s.
@@jeffdowney7452 very few 190s left by 1944, air superiority was very much achieved by the allies, might as well use them to some effect
0:48 and I'm sure everyone was wondering how an M1911 could destroy a Tiger tank. Even CPT. Miller was stunned himself.

I like how people in the comments are getting mad at Upham when half of them would be him in this situation.
That's about statically correct actually
@@JohnnysWarStories Ha ha, you know it it, even today in real life combat soldiers will have moments where they simply freeze up or cower in combat situations, however these events dont happen as frequent as they did in WW1 and WW2 because today's soldiers are far more mentally ready for combat, the training is a lot different, where as WW1 and WW2 it wasn't about that. Thats why given the circumstance, a lot of people would be just like Upham. War isn't a video game.
On a side note you should check out the movie White Tiger, a scene from it shows a Tiger 1 destroying T-34's. It would defiantly make some good content.

The pilots of the Mustangs were Ray Hanna, and his son Mark Hanna. Both former RAF pilots. Both have since passed. father in 2005, at 78. Sadly, Mark Hanna was killed in an aircraft crash at an airshow at the age of 40 only a year after 'Saving Private Ryan' came out.
I was so mad at Upham when I saw this movie as a teenager. When I got older I felt remorse. Upham = us, people who live comfortable lives away from war. When he killed the german that surrendered Upham basically lost his last shred of humanity and innocence that was left in him. Even someone as weak as Upham will either adapt to war or die in it. There is no other outcome.
That was the same German that they let go in the middle and the one that killed one of uphams comrades in the tower while upham cowered on the staircase if you didn’t realize, no hate just replying 🙂
@@ArchangelMichael. Nope, not the same German. The soldier who killed Uphams comrade in the apartment was Waffen-SS, Steamboat Willie was Wehrmacht. But as I remember Upham did observe him killing American soldiers retreating across the bridge which certainly upset him, hence the execution.

Power of suggestion is powerful. He saw everyone else surrender and sometimes people go along with the crowd and cant see the larger situation. Easy to analyze from the sidelines but that German probably was not wanting risk everyone on his hunch alone. Plus other Americans were there and the war was basically over for them there.
@@SolZaer he just pointed his gun at him in his blind spot and I thought it was kinda funny is all
might have been a blooper but also he might have had visual contact with the American brigade swarming right in front of the bridge and just decided to lay his gun down. If you look at some of them they also have smiles on their face seeing Upham in front of them kinda humoring him. Also the reason why Steam boat Willy tried to verbally manipulate him again like he did before.

Definitely getting a 1911 now
Tom Hanks character was firing at the slit in the tank that the tank crew used to see out . My father claimed that he was told that when an M1 bullet went thru the slit it would ricochet around inside the tank , I had a friend now deceased that went into the FBI after WW 2 , he claimed that he was shooting at a tanks slit and gray marks were going all around it and a few minutes later he saw a tank with the hatch open and screaming inside just as a GI jumped onto the tank and dropped a pineapple down the hatch .
That slit was filled with thick armoured glass, small arms fire wouldn’t go through it.
I have actually heard this and also heard that it was a periscope and Also heard that the driver or gunner had no glass but had an armored louvre that they could close . All said a lot of G Is believed that they could get a bullet thru the slit even if it was all in vain , thanks for the comment.
@@randyblackburn9765 Even if you don't break the glass if you can scar it up enough from repeated hits you essentially blind the tank crew and force them to use the hatches to know where they are going or shooting at. Still better than just letting it push you uncontested, but obviously not as good as an actual anti-tank weapon.
@@Ashfielder Didn't Captain Miller fire his Thompson into that slit against another Tiger? Not saying that slit didn't have thick armored glass, but that in this film's "universe," it's just a slit. Otherwise, he's really just shooting at a tank with a 1911.
@@CrashB111 that glass is swappable and it's fast and simple. There is a Wehrmacht training video show how Panther crew operate their tank. One of the scene show them replace damaged glass with new one, they even have like 6-8 of them to replace inside their tank.

The ground attack role has belonged to the p-47 thunderbolt, another great plane.
USAF has used most part of his mustangs to Escort the bombers in bombing missions, that's the reason of the p-51 development, a fighter with a long operation range to supply the USAF Escort weakness in that War period. The brithish has used the mustangs for ground attacks, It has a Low capability for bombs but has a Very good precision for rockets.
The introduction of the mustangs was the turning point weapon of ww2.
Yeah. This was more what the Mustangs did in Japan, in Europe it would have definitely been a thunderbolt.
@@Chiknnnnnn In Japan it would have been Hellcats or Corsairs
@@justinebautista1383 P-47's also operated in Japan though.

top 10 last minute saves
at 1:20 I do find it funny that the last German soldier that comes into frame lowers his weapon perfectly at Upham without him noticing and just goes along with the surrendering
Glad that Medal of Honor Allied Assault, which is heavily based on this film, correctly depicted the P-47 as the US ground attack plane instead. They cover Lt. Powell in the Normandy bocage and Brittany levels against German artillery and armor.
The US did use the P-51 airframe for tank busting until they started installing the Merlin engine onto it. The CAS variant of the P-51 was the A-36 Apache. Afterward, the P-47 was used because of its rugged build.
Did he ask that Kraut if he was a Yankees fan or a Dodgers fan? Man, that was harsh ...

That moment in Hell Let Loose when the Commander gets off a precision strike in the nick of time.
the fact that the 1911 went out of battery after the 7th shot made me hard. No movie has given more attention to detail and realism than this.
Énorme film .. .
Realistically, it was supposed to be P-47 Thunderbolts since P-51s are not suited for bombing role
@John Cornell, Actually there were 3 Tigers in the American sector. 1 was loaded onto a train car. Its tracks were missing and it was damaged. Its gun still worked but the turret couldn't rotate. The other 2 were abandoned. One was out of gas and the other was both disabled and out of gas. The rest were in the British and Canadian sectors. The German division they were fighting in this scene would've been using Panzer IVs.
@John Cornell My mistake. I forgot. Have you watched Mark Felton Productions Channel? He posted a video about the American encounters with Tiger Is in France. It's called: Wounded Tiger Tanks vs. US Halftracks. The US should be thankful that the British and Canadians were bogged down trying to take Caen which took until August and kept the Tigers and much of the other German divisions occupied in the north sector. Less than a month before Paris was liberated. I read on TV Tropes and Idioms that the British could've taken Caen on D-day as originally planned but they stopped for tea and delayed the advance giving the Germans time to get into position. Their article: Spot of Tea talks about that in the Real Life section. Also how the British army would use the boiling hot water from their Vickers machine guns to make tea during World War I. They'd fire a few shots and the water was more than hot enough. They even installed burners inside their tanks after World War II that were linked to the engine so they could boil water for tea inside the tank where they had more protection from enemy fire and reduced the time needed to make it.
Completely false the P51 was a more than capable ground attacker, could be fitted with bombs or rockets, the reason why the P47 was more often used for ground attack was because the P51 was also the ideal escort fighter with its performance and range as they could fly with bombers all the way into Germany and back and so thats where many ended up
@@ey7290 Never knew that. Thanks for sharing!

Nope!
Some P-51s carried rockets, but you are correct.
That role more often went to the P-47.
As much as I love this scene, it's always bugged me that they used a P-51. The P-47 would have been the go to plane for ground attack, which they did a lot of in Europe. I know, I know, the P-51 is gorgeous and gets all the glamour, but like all liquid cooled fighters she's highly vulnerable to ground fire. One hit in the radiator and she's done! You can shoot the hell out of an air cooled Pratt and Whitney R2800 and it will keep going. not to mention the P-47 carries 8 .50 caliber machine guns!
At 0:30 the slide on the 1911 locks back meaning the gun is out of ammo.
That is usually the case but it could've also jammed because of all the dirt. Back then 1911s weren't as finely machined as they are today.
@warrior in a garden its a double edged sword. It would take less to gum it up but it would also be harder for dirt to get inside since the gaps would be smaller. One thing I forgot about is the fact that todays ammo is much more reliable than that of 80 years ago so that could also be a factor
Although it was possible for the P-51 to destroy tanks, I always thought the P-47 would have been a better choice to use in this scene.
Well i guess they couldn't find any airworthy P-47
Curious case is why the Tiger Tank isn't firing its side mg-42 machine gun.
Only problem with the scene is that the pistol jammed at about 0:26 mark so it kind of ruined it a little for me but overall pretty epic scene.

Tiger 1 vs colt 45 😃😂
its kinda funny because chance of P51 dropping a bomb directly at the tank was as great as Tom Hanks hitting tank driver with his pistol through the hatch... usually, tanks were destroyed by the bomb that exploded near the tank, but such thing would kill him as well... YET even in those occasions, chance for a plane to drop a bomb near a tank to disable it was below 2%... (and no, P51 could not destroy a Tiger with rockets, those were even less accurate than bombs, and were considered good only against unprotected infantry in the open)
I suppose this is Spielberg's encapsulated version of WWII, Americans land at d-day, win the war , the end. P-38's, P-47's, Typhoons, Beaufighters were the rocket firing fighter bombers that destroyed German tanks during WW II ETO Not the P-51, The F-51 Korean war had rockets.
