1 & 2 Samuel: The Bible Explained

  • Watch our Introduction video on the books of 1 & 2 Samuel, which outlines the books' main theme and how it is fulfilled in Jesus.
    The books of 1&2 Samuel narrate the beginning of Israel's monarchy with the rise and fall of King Saul and King David. The true King of Israel will humbly listen to God's word, and God's Kingdom will be established in humility, not pride. But both Saul and David fail to be this humble King and fail to build the nation God desires. It is only Jesus who humbly listens to the voice of God. It is only Jesus who establishes a nation of humility. And it is only Jesus who can cause every proud king to bow.

    I was reading this book today and again asked the question of why did the Israelites ask for a human king, but then I realized that I can’t think to myself that it should of been an easy answer. Now I’m not saying that the Israelites asking for a king was right, but I am saying that there was a lot of pressure and suffering which made obedience a big choice for them. They were attacked all the time and suffered under oppression and constant fear of death. Constant defeat and oppression must have made them feel like flies, and reminded them so much of their time in Egypt. Being constantly under the thumb of the people they let stay in the promised land must have made them see those nations as stronger and then they thought it could be attributed to them having human kings. There was a war inside of them, two voices: the satan saying “you will never be free, and God saying “look at what I’ve done.” To stay as they were would mean trusting completely in God’s ability to protect them from the other nations.
    We could say that they should of trusted God because of what God had done in the past, but then what is our excuse for our doubts? What can we say is our excuse when we put all our trust in other things or people instead of God? If someone asked that question of us with no understanding of what we had been through it would be a logical question but also very ignorant of our struggles. The truth is that trust is not easy when things are hard but quite easy when things are good. So then what do we do? How do we trust in God’s protection when we are constantly in danger? I’m not completely sure of the answer myself, but I think that one of the answers I have gotten from this book so far is that remembrance of how hard things were in the times that God has proved his trustworthiness to us is very important. In those times when the satan is pointing at our struggles and our situations in his argument for us to distrust God we need to be able to point at God’s victories, God’s help, and God’s solutions.

    So often people think they need to add music and a DRAMATIC voice to make people feel something. As a result, I always feel like someone's trying to manipulate my emotions. Why not just tell the story, leave most of the music out, calm the voice down, and just tell it, letting me decide if I'm going to have an emotional reaction or not?

    • @SpokenGospel
      @SpokenGospel  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hey There! You're right. Jesus doesn't show up until the New Testament. However, at Spoken Gospel we take really seriously what Jesus said to his disciple on the road to Emmaus. "And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself" (Luke 24:17).
      Everything we write as Spoken Gospel tries to show our audience how the story of Jesus' death and resurrection is hinted at, foreshadowed, and prophecies in every passage of Scripture. I hope that helps. If you want to hear a little but more about the way we see the Bible, you should check out this podcast where we go on a deep dive.
