I have seen that other people have already answered your question about the horned man at Harrenhal. But I’m going to add a little bit to that. In the main A Song of Ice and Fire series and some of the supporting material, there is a legend about a race of people known as the Green Men. It is one of the mysteries of the main series that will hopefully get further explanation if Martin eventually gets us more of the main story. Several of the characters in the series think about this legend from time to time. But there is a lot of question about what they really are. Bran Stark thinks about them the most. In his mind, they are described as horned men. But he never knows if they actually have horns or they are wearing horns on their head. He doesn’t know if they actually have green skin, or if they just wear green garments. He just knows the stories about how they are the guardians of the Isle of Faces, a mysterious island in the middle of the lake known as the God’s Eye. This is the lake that Harrenhal sits on the edge of. When people try to visit the lake it is said that they are repelled by strong winds or flocks of ravens. The Isle of Faces is supposed to be the site of an ancient pact between the Children of the Forest and the First Men and it is covered with a grove of Weirwood trees. Even the purpose of that pact and what was agreed upon is a mystery. Most people think that it something to do with the original Long Night, the White Walkers and the Weirwood network. Having a Green Man pop up in the show like that is a welcome surprise for fans of the books that particularly enjoy the magical elements of the series. House of the Dragon has been much better about the magical parts of the story than Game of Thrones was. The Green Men are inspired by Celtic legends of the horned god Cernunnos as well as numerous other myths and legends like the Oak King and the Holly King. The Oak King and the Holly King represent the turning of the seasons through the struggle of two brothers that are in constant battle, where one kills the other in order for the seasons to turn. And within the A Song of Ice and Fire you have many examples of brothers killing each other and a world where something happened to throw the seasons out of their normal cycle. A cycle that very much needs to be restored. A great example of this in the books is when Stannis kills Renly. In the books Renly is dressed in green armor, which includes a horned helmet, and his knights are known as the Knights of Summer. Another example is that Jon Snow is referred to as a Corn King by a talking raven in the books. A Corn King is another ancient legend where the king is ritually sacrificed in order to bring about a bountiful harvest after Winter’s end. My point is that the sighting of a Green Man in House of the Dragon ties into all these ancient nature myths and legends that the book series uses to point to the ancient magic that was misused and which led to the original Long Night and the creation of the White Walkers. And many book readers believe that the Green Men hold one of the keys to setting this right.

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the Jace thing. It's not just that more people have dragons and that makes him feel less special, it's specifically that it's bastards doing it. His idea was for people like Ser Steffon Darklyn who, while he didn't have much Targaryen blood, was of noble and legitimate birth. There's a belief that only trueborn Targaryens could bond with dragons, so when Jace and his brothers bonded with theirs, they could use that to deny being bastards (therefore making Jace the rightful heir to the throne). Doing this has shown that bastards can bond with dragons, which takes that away as an argument for Rhaenyra's sons' legitimacy, and if Jace can't convince people he's the trueborn son of Rhaenyra and Laenor, then he won't be able to inherit the throne. So he's definitely being an elitist, classist dick about it, but it makes sense for him to worry about that.

I think people hate this season unjustifiably. Yes there is not much action this season, but this is necessary for the eventual big war. In this season we got to see the sides, the alliances, the motivations, plotting and scheming. We all don't want HOTD to end up like GOT S8, and the 1 thing the directors didn't do for the later seasons was take their time to set the storylines up for the eventual breakout.
The first season was the building of the characters and world, during multiple years and the falling apart of the royal family due to internal conflict.
The second season is the reaction, the creation of sides, the making of alliances and the recruiting of followers, and planning for the war.
The third season will be the breakout, and because we got both the buildup of characters and sides we get to have a really satisfying way of seeing the war play out.
You may think this season is boring, but it is necessary for the story. The whole war wouldn't be complete if we didn't see the internal struggle from Daemon, the character development of Aemond and Aegon, the realization of mistakes in Allicent, the reluctance of Helaena, the feeling of worthlessness from Jayce compared to the new dragonriders.
I think people will appreciate this season way more when the actual war finally starts

@@editsby_ems3528 Yeah I also get it why people may think of it as underwhelming, but it is 100% necessary. The thing is, people compare it to GOT and that is just not something that is possible here. In GOT you had the buildup and action both in a season, but people forget that there were multiple battles being fought at the same time, so you can have buildup for battle 1 while you get the action of battle 2.
In HOTD there is only 1 war, and 2 sides that you get to see. So is wouldn't make sense to have a lot of action in between the buildup.

Ive marinated on it, I dont think I like it. They dragged things out too much. I understand having to move Daemon, but they spent 8 episodes on that one plot line, that dragged on too long.
3-4 episodes of teasing Rheana and the wild dragon. And this final episode a several minute montage of her trekking the wilderness and becoming Bear Grylles to find it. Too much, and not even to pay it off by showing her taming the dragon? Really?
They ended season one with Rhaenyra looking like she was about to go mad queen. And then spent the first 4 episodes trying to sue for peace. And now that a peace offering that would end with her as victor shows up on her doorstep she's not going to accept it unless she can take Aegon's head? Victory is at hand, you make Aegon bend the knee in front of everybody and then send him to the wall and have the Starks make sure he never leaves it, you take his kids as "hostages" like Theon was in the north. He has no pecker so he cant make anymore heirs, the Greens are finished, you take all seven dragons and hunt down Aemond and its over because the Lannisters wont have anybody to fight for. The Hightower army cant/wont stand on its own. Game over, you win.

Rhaenyra: your sons might have had places of honor at court- but the blood of my sweet sons is on their hands.
Alicent: Bastard blood, shed at war.

No one asked, but I’ve been trying to work out the current line of succession. Assuming women cannot inherited the Iron Throne and that the line of succession cannot pass down the female line, (which was established during the Great Council when Princess Rhaenys and her son Prince Laenor were denied the Iron Throne in favour of Viserys.) Please correct me if I’m wrong but I think it goes like this:
    1. Aegon II : First-born son of King Viserys and Queen Alicent
    2. Jaehaerys (deceased): First-born son of King Aegon and Queen Helaena
    3. Maelor (cut from the show): Second-born son of King Aegon and Queen Helaena
    4. Aemond: Second-born son of King Viserys and Queen Alicent
    5. Daeron: Third-born son of King Viserys and Queen Alicent
    6. Daemon: Second-born son of Prince Baelon and Princess Alyssa, and brother to King Viserys
    7. Aegon III: First-born son to Prince Daemon and Princess Rhaenyra
    8. Viserys: Second-born son to Prince Daemon and Princess Rhaenyra

But if that's the case, why is she crying when Alicent had to make that hard choice at the end? I thought that whole scene was so bizarre.

She was crying for Alicent because she knows what it's like as a mother to be asking this of another mother and deep down she still cares for Alicent. And no she can't really just take Aegon prisoner or let him live because the Hightower's will always be stirring up rebellions etc to free him, he is their gateway to ruling the kingdom something the Hightower's have always wanted and they won't just let it go. Even Otto's older brother in Season 1 was pressuring Otto to make sure Aegeon would become the heir. Old Town is a very manipulative and powerful but many have long speculated that they secretly have been working against the Targaryen's for a long time and responsible for the end of the dragons or the belief in magic by Game of Thrones times.

Easter Egg: Hopefully everyone knows that the Children of the Forest carved faces in the Weirwood trees ages ago. The Weirwood at Harrenhal has a special face, that of the creator, George R.R. Martin... all hail!
In the visions Daemon had, we see Ser Brynden Rivers, bastard son of King Aegon IV, aka Bloodraven, the man who would later become the Three-Eyed Raven and teaching Bran Stark to succeed him as the Three-Eyed Raven. After Daemon, Bloodraven also wielded Dark Sister, one of the two Valyrian steel ancestral swords of House Targaryen. There is a not-so-popular, yet interesting, theory that Daemon and Bloodraven are the same person. We will see more of Bloodraven in HBO's new upcoming series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but not until season 3 of that show, if they match 1 book to 1 season.
That show centers around a wandering Hedge Knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his loyal squire, Egg. "Egg" is short for Aegon, as in Targaryen, future King Aegon Targaryen, Fourth of his name. But only Dunk, Egg, and Egg's father know Egg's true identity. You may remember in Game of Thrones, when Maester Aemon was dying he was talking to his little brother, Egg, that's this Aegon.
So we will also get to see a young Maester Aemon, and I am hoping we also get to see a young Lady Olenna Tyrell. I think that's who Maester Aemon was referring to when he told Sam he had once been in love.
On a side note, Ser Duncan the Tall is the grandfather of Hodor and great-grandfather of Brienne of Tarth.
    ✌️

I love you guys ❤I felt the same way about this season. It’s not GOT so the storytelling will be different. Also all the extremely hard work that it takes to even get what we see on screen is nothing short of amazing 🤩 I am grateful to be alive where a fantasy show gets this much love and detail ❤ Great season 2 prepare for season 3 🎉

beautiful episode of tv that also too painfully exposes the fact that this was initially blocked as a 10 episode season and had to change it to 8 after scripts were being written

So if I’m counting correctly season 3 dragons will 8 vs 3 in the blacks favour. Or 8 vs 2.5 since Helenna doesn’t wish to fight

Chef stealer equals curly that was funny I had to laugh lol and we know that rain is going to end up with sheep stealer. I’d just want to know how Rhaenyra is going to handle the fact that she loved her little babies she go out in the ship with no adult with them that Rhaenyra trusted that was Rena’s job and I get the raynera thought she’d be more help with the dragon. However, she left those babies exposed one doesn’t make it and one barely makes it so this is not a good luck ha ha.
