Fascinating! She was a hard taste master but paid off for her students.

I couldn't resist it, knowing your admiration for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf J which I share totally. A small gift to you from the East.
I just hope Walter is saying, "Well done". :)

i am swiss ... i lived in forch, she in the village next ... zumikon ... i remember when the negative press started because she sung in hitler germany ... then i remember that she heard maria callas and then refused to sing the same roles ... my aunt always stated that schwarzkopf is perfect and most beautiful ... personally i never liked her teeth ... last remark ... in paris a gentleman from argentina (teatro colon) asked me, where i am from ... when i said switzerland ... he answered lisa della casa ... she had a natural voice ... schwarzkopf sung with technique ... and then who she married ... it is like marlene dietrich leaving germany ... hollywood is jewish etc. etc. by the way marlene dietrich rented the house of an uncle in st. gilgen ... she showed up with her secretary and a male hollywood star ... recently my cousin said to me ...our family was always convinced that she had an affair with her secretary ... in german you call this dichtung und wahrheit ... when she talks ... she wants to be right ... i watched old intervies ... for me she is no goddess of opera and classical music ... however, she was above average ...

You can see why Renee Fleming said after a masterclass with Schwarzkopf she couldn't sing a note. Apparently this is is how Walter Legge treated Schwarzkopf when they were recording. Compare Fleming in her own masterclass. "Very ok"!

From all the evidence, Schwarzkopf welcomed Legge's constant browbeating. His perfectionist bent was exceeded only by her own, and she seemed to thrive under his eagle ear. Unfortunately, his rather cruel treatment of his wife also extended to their personal lives; he is known, for instance, to have called her a pig in front of shocked and appalled guests at a post-recital reception.
On one occasion, Schwarzkopf was singing Elvira in Don Giovanni, I believe at Covent Garden. In a rehearsal of the recit preceding the Catalogue Aria, Legge had been particularly beastly toward his wife, when Geraint Evans, the Leporello, began removing his necktie and jacket. When Legge asked what was up, Evans calmly replied, 'First I'm going to thrash you, and then I'm going to teach you how a gentleman properly treats a lady.' Apparently things were quickly smoothed over, and Legge once again escaped a long overdue mortification of his ego.

@@jasonhurd4379 In the late fourties, Karajan met Legge who teached Schwarzkopf (before she became his wife and a famous singer) and was very strict with her. Karajan said to Legge: "I cannot stand how you torture that girl." The three became good friends.

@@franziskakre8309 Although in later years, after Legge's death, Schwarzkopf said that Karajan was a bad man with no ethics or morals. She said that Furtwängler was a much better man than Karajan. Interesting.

Fleming is an airhead by comparison to what you see here, which is called art.

It is a little bit painful - listening to Fleming singing in german language. Her ’Vier Letzte Lieder’, for example, is not good at all.
