I was actually there in this concert, and it was genuinely one of the best concerts I’ve been in. What you actually can’t hear in CDs is her absolutely insane ability to communicate with the orchestra through body language and looks, therefore this concerto was imo better than on her album Paris. She and the orchestra with more creative rubati. And she played THREE encores! This goes to the top 5 of my experience regarding music

This is such disappointing camera work. While I appreciate how vital and talented the orchestra is, I'm so surprised how often the camera leaves Hilary and pans to the orchestra during some of the most electric moments of the solo part. And half of the time the camera is on her, it's at a suboptimal angle to even see what she's doing. Musically, this was great to listen to though.

Given classical music is about performance I'm not sure why people are so intent on overproducing performances like this. I don't want to hear bass notes panning from left to right mid line as if this is some prog rock record. Also, I'd like to observe the natural dynamics of the performers rather than the mix some producer chose when balancing the 50 or so microphones used for this recording. I have a feeling this is quite a lot different than how this actually sounded in the hall in terms of the balance between soloist and orchestra... Old classical records are incomparably better than modern ones when producers had only a 4 or maybe an 8 track recorder and mic'd the room to actually capture a sound representing what people in the hall really heard. It's likely they are dynamically modifying the EQ and or level of Hahn's violin at times during this performance which is as insane as it is inane. It's crazy how I can buy old classical records for about $2 a piece and they're far better than most modern recordings.

It was in Frankfurt am Main in Germany, on the 23th of February this year. She stopped performing in 2019 (?) and took a sabbatical year

Thank you so much for posting the concert but my god, that was so frustrating to watch… What the broadcasting people did on that 3rd movement was just tragic. It was already not good but by the end it seemed as though they were going out of their way to completely omit the soloist. Imagine practicing so hard to play such a devilishly hard piece, absolutely NAILING IT in a live performance only for the camera people to be like “yeah, we thought the half notes the tuba was playing were more interesting than all that crazy stuff you were doing over there”. (Nothing against tuba guy, love tuba guy).
I know my comment is so disproportionate but as someone who knows the monumental technical demands of what she just did, this just made me so angry lol. Imagine a prima ballerina starting the daunting 32 fouettes in Swan Lake’s coda and the camera just starts panning to get the reactions of the corps de ballet, the orchestra, random person #3, etc. missing the whole thing. This is what they did.

I totally agree I wanted to see more of her fingerings. She plays this piece so amazingly

Totally agree. I was hoping for this video because there are just a really old video of her performing Prokofiev. But the scene director was all over the place. It would be great for the orchestra performance, but this is a Violin Concerto, and the camera cuts should focus more on Hillary

Not exactly the same as with ballet, because that's all visual, and music doesn't actually need the visuals to be effective. I was grading chemistry papers while listening and I fully enjoyed what I heard.....I only saw about 1/3 of it. As a clarinetist, I obviously wasn't interested in her fingerings, but then, I wasn't looking at the clarinets' fingerings, either!

@@elisecurran9497 But that's not the point of the comparison... The comparison being made is that much like the pivotal moment that is the 32 fouettes in Swan Lake (in which no camera ever has panned away from a single fouette because, duh), the pivotal moment of the 3rd movement is the development when she's starts flying up and down the fingerboard at an insane speed. At such a similar moment, the cameras just decided to point away from the soloist missing the whole thing, which is bewildering if you have ears or 2 cents of common sense.
This is about the medium and the context. There is a video broadcast, of a live performance, of a violin concerto, with a soloist (who probably sold out the concert btw) and the broadcasting people think the priorities here are everything else but the soloist.
If you're happy to just listen, I'll do you one better. There's a studio quality recording of this concerto with Hilary Hahn by Deutsche Grammophone. I for one will stay perplexed at the complete lack of common sense displayed here, in this video.

@@h.felixflores8375 I am in complete, complete agreement with you. Why film a concerto performance if you're not going to film the soloist? Just broadcast the audio then. People would still love an audio livestream. But they chose to add visuals on top of the audio, and to have the video focus on everyone else but the soloist doesn't make sense. Imagine if they did the same with the audio - some parts you'd hear the violin clearly and other parts the violin was muted, that's what it feels like.
I feel the same regarding World Ballet Day morning class livestreams when the camera spends too much time focusing on the pianist or teacher or random zoomed-in face shots. It's a ballet class, we want to see the dancers' entire bodies.
