The most helpful Avid tutorial I've found! Coming from a Premiere background, Avid has always felt intimidating and a lot of tutorials haven't been very helpful--yours actually made it make sense!
As an expert in Premiere and an intermediate in almost everything else this was such a refreshingly straight forward yet comprehensive guide on the strange beast that is Avid, and it went a long way in filling in my gaps of understanding specific to this. Thank you for this. I subscribed
I second Kip's response. Mark, you made the transition to Avid digestible. I haven't used Avid in over 10 years. This video delivered the nuts and bolts and left out the fluff. I truly appreciate you considering our time as well as yours.

Terrific introduction to Avid. Speaking of in-points 41:40, back in the day I have worked with editors who used to mark in and out points on film and mag tape with china markers (grease pencils) using this convention. My guess is that's where it comes from.
Good hypothesis. I've also heard it's to mimic the ends of two thumbs holding the film around the selected section. In any case, I'm definitely used to it by now but maybe because I come from a math background, still seems a little counterintuitive having the "brackets" facing AWAY from the stuff you're trying to enclose instead of TOWARD it.
@@filmprofmark Ah yes! The Thumbs. Reminds me of an editor I worked with who used to edit films with a 4 gang synchroniser, hold film up against a light to view and mark in and out points. Absolutely agree with you -- the math "brackets" to include material makes so much more sense!

Hey man, great video! I've had trouble finding good avid tutorials that actually explain the way in which the editor is using the program. This video was clear and covered a lot of little details I wasn't sure about so thanks for that. If you ever feel like making further videos on other areas of the Avid workflow I'd def give that a watch too. Keep it up!

Great tutorial for someone getting familiar with MC. Still, don't quite agree with the sentiment that it's easier to get your timeline out of sync in MC vs, let's say, PPro. They feel exactly the same to me in this regard.
Personally I've never had a huge issue with this in Avid either, but in 20 years teaching different editing systems (FCP, Premiere, Avid) I've found students accidentally do this WAY more in Avid than in the other systems, at least when they're getting started. So thought it was worth a mention in a tutorial for other beginners.
I have a quick question , I am trying to make a music video with pictures flashing on the beat ... of course I can see the beat in the audio section but I cant move the image exactly right on the beat ...Is there anyway to turn off the time grid so I can put the picture right on beat? I was assuming it was a frame rate thing but I'm not sure... if you could help me with this question I would be much appreciated!!!!
You can certainly put the picture at any frame you want so the beat is at the same time, not sure what problem you're running into. Unless you're wanting to put the cut EXACTLY lined up in the timeline with the beat, which only works if the beat happened to line up - obviously picture frames can only move within the limitations of the framerate (so at 24 fps can only cut every 1/24th of a second). But perceptually, that's fine enough precision to create the sense of matching. So just put the picture so the length of the frame overlaps the moment of the beat, or possibly one frame after depending which gives the feel you want

This is a fabulous video. Btw, the i/o markers represent thumbnails, as if you were holding film with thumbs pointing to each other. (sliding the film by hands to find the desired cut) ;)
Sorry to hear that. I don't have a Windows system to test it on right now, but have worked on Avid in Windows before and used this successfully. Maybe something changed in a new version, or maybe corrupted user settings or something?
How do you get your mouse to be able to click things on the timeline? More specifically how are you scrubbing through the timeline by clicking the bottom. Also my overwrite drag tool isn’t working like yours. It’s just dropping stuff at the top or bottom of clips red or yellow cursor
Not entirely sure what issues you're running into since could be describing several things. In terms of clicking or dragging to scrub through the timeline, Avid can be pretty particular - depending on which mode(s) is/are active (overwrite and/or insert/splice-in mode) clicking in different places will work differently. Regardless, you should be able to click around in the horizontal timecode section at the top of the Timeline above your sequence, or anywhere on the timecode track of the sequence, and move to that time. It's only when you're clicking on actual clips or filler with one of the segment modes turned ON that this won't work. As to the overwrite drag tool if it's putting them on top of or below clips then maybe you're dragging it up or down? Make sure to just drag horizontally to keep it on the same track. If by "top or bottom" you mean "start or end" of the clips you may have a setting turned on to snap to clip start/ends during drag. This is in the settings, go to "Timeline", click on the "Edit" tab, and see if the option for "Segment Drag Snap" is turned on. If so, turn it off and you should now be able to drag things more freely.
This tutorial is FANTASTIC, but would you be able to tell me how to extend/shorten a clip by grabbing the ends like in Premiere? I work in animation and it's one of the features I use the most to retime storyboards while making animatics. I was able to do it before but something happened with my settings and now it won't let me pull out clips when I click on the ends - AVID keeps going into Trim Mode instead. I have Linked Selection toggled off, if that helps.
Well, if you're in Trim Mode you can grab the active cut and extend or shorten it by dragging the end. So I guess quickest would be click at a cut to move playhead there, then U to enter Trim Mode, then drag the cut whichever way you want. There very well may be a way to do it outside Trim Mode but I don't do much with the mouse so haven't ever looked for it. Relatedly there is also the Extend command you can map to keyboard that will extend neighboring shot to in/out point. Can be used kind of like the old "Close gap' in Final Cut Pro
Do you know how to animate titles in the new Avid 2020 titler+? They seem to just be fx now and I can't figure out how to add motion fx to them. None of the parameters on the effect editor or title+ appear to do the trick.
You can do it within the Effect Editor. Create your title then open up the Effect Editor and where it says "layers" you need to open that up. Within that for each individual text layer you'll see the usual position, scale, etc. parameters, all keyframeable in the usual way.
This is a great video. My toggle buttons for the overwrite/splice-in are not E and R. Why is that? Seems that E and R instead do an in/out on the timeline.
Yours are set to the defaults. I have my students remap some of the keys to what I think are more useful (the default keyboard is designed to have in/out point shortcuts on both sides of keyboard which seems inefficient to me, would rather have the toggles easily available since I use them a ton)
Great care in explaining finally the way to use the tools to do simple cuts. I hate the new changes in Avid Composer. Everything is so different. It seems the more the engineers change Avid the worse it gets. They should not change things that worked so well in older design.
I do agree some of the changes are obnoxious, however glad they reorganized all the menus which had gotten very random over the years as things were added based on where there was menu room not what made sense
If you're talking about a clip already in a sequence, make sure the "link selection toggle" is turned off (icon is three tracks connected on the right, kind of looks like a horizontally stretched "3"; it's on the default toolbar for the Timeline). Then you can just select the audio part of the clip and delete it without affecting the video. If you're talking about permanently replacing the audio in a clip, I'd recommend putting the clip and the new audio in a new sequence together, line them up where you want them, delete the unwanted audio, then select that sequence in the bin and go to the menu Clip --> AutoSync. It will turn this sequence into a new "clip" with the original video and the new audio.
If you mean the one at the very top of the Timeline window, I don't believe it can be hidden in the current version of MC (but could be wrong). The ones that're part of your sequence (e.g., "TC1") you can move around if that's helpful for you, on a Mac click on the track title, hold option and drag up or down (btw same works for moving/rearranging any of the audio/video tracks) (I *think* on Windows it's hold down Alt but don't have a Windows system handy to check on). Also same key press if you move your mouse to the bottom of a track name you can change the track height, FYI. Hope some of that is helpful.
Paid. Never used the free one, no idea how different it is but I'd guess interface pretty similar and the limitations are in number of tracks or projects?
the command is "add edit"; on my keyboard and the older Avid default keyboard that is mapped to H. If you have a more recent installation of Avid (like the last 10 years) I believe they changed the default command for the a H key to be "Focus" so you'd have to remap it (I have another CZcams tutorial on customizing your keyboard if you don't know how to do that).
I'm not aware of a simple one (if anyone is, let me know!) but one solution is if you "float" instead of docking your bins, command-` (that's the tilda key top left of keyboard on Mac) cycles you through all your open windows. This was unfortunately something that was "lost" when they introduced docking windows (it still exists/works, but not for moving between docked items), but sometimes I like leaving things undocked specifically to take advantage of this for jumping between bins. So not a precise answer to your question, but if you have the screen real estate (like a dual monitor system) and can leave both bins in question open in their own floating windows, you can easily jump between them and other windows this way.

Understand how Avid handles media; beyond that it works pretty much like every other editor. My other advice to all newbies is take the time to learn keyboard shortcuts for your most common actions - a little investment of time on the front end pays off with a lot more efficiency for every project in the the future.

Holding shift to select different cuts in trim mode (around 37:40) doesn't work for me. I am on Windows with an AZERTY keyboard.

the command is "add edit"; on my keyboard and the older Avid default keyboard that is mapped to H. If you have a more recent installation of Avid (like the last 10 years) I believe they changed the default command for the a H key to be "Focus" so you'd have to remap it (I have another CZcams tutorial on customizing your keyboard if you don't know how to do that).

I'm not aware of a simple one (if anyone is, let me know!) but one solution is if you "float" instead of docking your bins, command-` (that's the tilda key top left of keyboard on Mac) cycles you through all your open windows. This was unfortunately something that was "lost" when they introduced docking windows (it still exists/works, but not for moving between docked items), but sometimes I like leaving things undocked specifically to take advantage of this for jumping between bins. So not a precise answer to your question, but if you have the screen real estate (like a dual monitor system) and can leave both bins in question open in their own floating windows, you can easily jump between them and other windows this way.
@@filmprofmark Thank you for your answer, very informative :) Still using an old scheme with new version of MC, but I am particularly looking for any solution for switching between multiple tabbed bins inside an active panel (bin container) via keyboard, anything but clicking on them.

Understand how Avid handles media; beyond that it works pretty much like every other editor. My other advice to all newbies is take the time to learn keyboard shortcuts for your most common actions - a little investment of time on the front end pays off with a lot more efficiency for every project in the the future.
