Hi, I'm Chad Wunderlich with Viking Pump. And to the left I have an internal gear pump and to the right an external gear pump. Today, let's talk about the similarities and differences between these two different technologies. You're watching the Pump Report. These pumps do have many similarities so let's start there. Both are rotary positive displacement pumps featuring two meshing gears where the liquid is carried through the pump in the spaces between the gear teeth. These similarities mean these pumps share the following advantages. They handle a wide range of viscosities, provide smooth, non-pulsating flow, they're highly efficient, and both are self priming. With all the similarities between these pumps, it's not exactly easy to know which to use for an application. Let's look at the differences between these types of pumps. In terms of viscosity, both types of gear pumps handle a wide range of liquids from low to high viscosity. But that being said, external gear pumps do tend to have tighter clearances and are better suited to handling thin liquid applications. Internal gear pumps feature adjustable clearances and a wide range of port options. This makes them better suited for handling high viscosity applications. Even extreme viscosity fluids like peanut butter, silicone, and molten rubber. These adjustable clearances also give the internal gear pump an advantage in terms of temperature - allowing them to be used in applications as high as 800 degrees. In terms of flows, again, both types of gear pumps are available in a wide range of sizes allowing for a wide range of flow rates. However, external gear pumps are available in more small size options. Viking Pump offers sizes all the way down to 0.06 gallons per minute at motor speed for metering additives and other liquids. Internal gear pumps are offered in more large size options with flow rates up to 1600 gallons per minute for applications such as loading or unloading of barges and rail cars. For pressure capability, external gear pumps have the advantage. With bearing support on both sides of each gear. These pumps are capable of pressures up to 2500 PSI. For this reason external gear pumps are favored for applications like pipeline injection or for use in hydraulics applications. But the reduced number of bearings or bushings in the liquid can also be an advantage for internal gear pumps. There can be as few as one bushing in the liquid and for abrasive applications this means fewer parts to harden and more hardened part options. Internal gear pumps are favored for abrasive liquid applications such as ink, waste oil, and filled polymer applications. This along with the other features we've discussed make internal gear pumps easier to repair should they become worn or otherwise damaged. Gear pumps share more similarities than differences, but this overview should help you to determine which gear pump may be the best fit for your application. How about self priming. Which one better?

Both are excellent at self-priming! Of course there are other variables to consider including speed, clearances, materials of construction, NPSH, and others. To learn more check out our priming video at czcams.com/video/FEuM5x9uzg8/video.html

Hi, how do you protect the pump face from tear and wear from the gears

    • @VikingPumpInc

Wear on the pump head is an abnormal condition and could be caused by a number factors. For help on this issue contact us at www.vikingpump.com/yt.

can internal gear pump make a suction of oil ander pump 2 meter

Excellent question! The short answer is yes, but this depends on other variables. Internal Gear pumps AND external gear pumps are both self-priming. We cover this very topic in another video. Check it out here: czcams.com/video/FEuM5x9uzg8/video.html
