Drumline Cadence for Marching Band
I learned this cadence in my High School Drumline - John C Fremont HS in South Central Los Angeles. Its origins go back to the 80's and it was taught to me by my instructor Virgil Lewis.

I am a tuba player watching tenor drum videos. What am I doing here
Kouta Tsuchiya thats cool where do you play at?
Jesus Alfonso Canal I'm in a highschool band! We're the Rancho Verde Crimson Regiment
Kouta Tsuchiya sounds good, maybe secretly you want to join Drumline. You should try it, maybe you'll like it.
me too
Jesus Alfonso Canal I might try out for winter drumline :)
Itâs that last part that gets me as Iâm practicing this on my quad
I go to a middle school band and we somehow are able to play advanced high school stuff, Iâm a tenor player btw
Congrats on playing the advanced stuff. Donât forget your fundamentals though, and keep grinding it out. Do you guys have any videos on here, send me a link. đ„âđŒ
TAROLEANDO I believe my school has some videos of football parades and stuff maybe
Cool man send us some links to check them out. Cool gaming channel by the way, keep grinding it out đ„âđŒ
It looks like your tenors are a bit high up, might be more comfortable if you lower them slightly
+Zach Cowin yeah I know my tenor technique isn't all there since my main instrument is snare. This was a quick video I made for my HS students. Where do you march or teach at?
Jesus Alfonso Canal Oh I march at squalicum hs in Bellingham WA, I play the tenors. Cool cadence tho I'd like to learn it
Zach Cowin sounds cool man, are you gonna audition for a corp? You definitely should, of my biggest regrets was not Marching corps. But I still enjoy it very much and passing on what ever knowledge I have to students. Do you guys have any videos of your line or band?
Zach Cowin lol I tune mine higher than that tho lol
think he's referring to the height of the drum
0:22 this part gets me when Iâm playing on my quads
You have to have your accents down, when my kids canât do accents at that speed they usually just play the accents only. The Bass drums also play those accents in unison.
Any videos of the whole drumline playing the 'Jungle' together?
Not yet, but soon with the score. đ„âđŒ
@@TAROLEANDO and we never got it đ or that I found anyway
Our junior high drumoine is playing jungle this year. I am a bass drum player mainly though
Thata cool, its an easy enough cadence for a middle school line to play. Where are you guys from?
Make a video of. All instruments jungle music
Happy holidays to
I played in a march but I used the French horn still cause we were like just playing it for intermission so we didnât play alot
Sounds good, keep it up. Music is beautiful and the French horn is a badass instrument. Do you guys have videos of your band?
Ima trynna learn the snare part for the second part but đȘ I canât find any tutorials
The snare part for the second part is all 16th notes with accents on 2 and 4 the triplets to got back to the beginning of the cadence
Yooo thatâs cool
Thanks đ„âđŒ
PBO !!!! Damn this brought back so many memories .
Yup old PBO Drum Cadence, what years did you march?
wow that actualy sounds good
Thanks, what do you play?
I Play Snare in a band in las cruces New Mexico band called ," Onate Knights"
Ah ok cool.
Iâm a French horn player I used to play drum tho so this is cool
Baileyplayz minecraft thanks! Did you march french horn or melaphone? Happy Holidays to you!
Incredible video! I liked it so much that on my channel. I played alongside you playing the Jungle Cadence!
-I hope you don't mind
Thanks and of course I donât mind you playing along to it. Hope I can record all parts so you can hear the full version.
Great video now I know a dope ass cadence
Whatâs this cadence from or what Iâve never heard of it
We played it in my old HS in the early 2000s but itâs older than that, probably from the 80s
Iâm starting to get into tenor for drum line at my school, whatâs a good way to practice if I donât have drums and a lot of money
Great question man, first of all congratulations on getting started in Drumline, those where some of the best times of my life. If you donât have a lot of money you can practice on a pillow to build up muscles in your wrist and fingers. Also on a piece of wood to practice some stick control and rebound. Or even on your lap if you donât mind the bruises at first. Setting up books to mimic tenor drums is also good, get creative but always practice efficiently. Get your hands on a Metronome and work on technique from the beginning. Best of luck to you, where are you from?
Another thing to keep track of is to play in the zones and to keep your fingers on your sticks, I struggled with these when I started
You are right man. My zones were pretty bad here cause Iâm not a tenor player. There are a lot of things that go into playing tenors that require a lot of patience and dedication to the little things in order to get better. Happy drumming đ„âđŒ
I want to try out for tenors next year, is there anything I should know?
Death Of America 2017 congratulations on trying out and all the best of luck to you. Well there are many things to be learned especially on tenors, but if I had to give you one thing is to always take on the challenge of playing tenors with an open mind and patience. And what that means is anything that you learn take your time with it and work at it a lot, but have patience with yourself and never give up if you donât get it. Playing drums is fun and you should be having the type of fun that hours and hours of practice seem like seconds to you. Hope that helps, hit me up on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and I can give you more specific things to work on depending on your level. Take care and happy drumming.
Work on your technique!!! With your technique all the rest comes easily and after you learn the technique you want to focus on building up chops and learning to read music.
Technique is key. Playing in the zones and moving drum to drum seamlessly
They're heavy as fuck
I know it's a bit late now seeing as the season has already started but if you're having trouble with carrying them or marching remember to keep your weight forward and if you're still having trouble carrying them then you might need to adjust your harness or height of the drums
Iâm going to be a sophomore this year, and Iâm possibly getting into drumline but Iâve never played tenors before. Is it too late to start?
Hey man Congratulations on wanting to join the Drumline. It is never too late to start, it's all about how much work you put in to the instrument. As a sophomore you still have a lot to develop and as a senior you could be at a very high level. With the right guidance and dedication you should be good. Make a list of all your strengths and weaknesses and build from there. An example would be how good is your technique, music reading skills, marching skills, musical timingâŠand so on. Let me know if you any help with some things, good luck and work hard.
No worries man. Keep on drumming đ„âđŒ
Iâm a 13 year old and Iâm trying out for high school drumline next year, any advice?
Talk to your future instructor and ask what you need from the start. Then just focus and building a solid foundation in timing, technique and sound. Itâs all a process but keep working everyday with some guided practice and routines. Keep working hard and let me know how it goes đ„âđŒ
@@TAROLEANDO thanks. Im a quad player for my middle school drumline, and im the only one that can read the music accurately so i think im off to a good start

itâs too hard to keep playing on the first drum while switch to the others
What do you mean? There are exercises that help you with the around son tenors. đ„âđŒ
zones my man
Jig 2
Peach County cadence
Its rlly faint but if u hook to a sound bar and listen closely to this at the beginning before he plays they are listening to justin Timberlake cant stop the feeling
Hahaha I didnât even notice that. It must have been the cheerleaders outside playing that or something. Do you play or march?
Jesus Alfonso Canal i do march
Where do march?
Jesus Alfonso Canal im actually in middle school im rlly good at the tenors tho
Thats cool man, we all start somewhere. If you keep it up by the time you are a senior youâll have some monster chops.
Music?
Toaster Burns email me at tarolasytambora@gmail.com I can send it to you
Bro cmon, you cant transcribe that. I'm not trying to be rude, and I think its a great cadence, but it's fairly simple to transcribe.
Sebastian Snyder Yeah it i played it just by watching this i honestly dont know why i asked for music
yeah
It is a pretty simple cadence to transcribe, but I can still send you the score If you're interested. You can always beef it up depending on your line. Where do you guys march?
Are those tim jacksons?
Extreme yeah those are the Tim Jackson models. Do you use them?
Unfortunately, ive never gotten my hands on them. I have been looking into buying them though!
Yeah theyâre a cool tenor stick.
I was requesting jig 2 but that piece sounds nice
Ah ok sounds cool. Iâm hoping to get a chance and update this part of my channel. I have a lot of warm ups a cadences that I want to record. What do you march?
I march snare
Thatâs cool! I marched Snare back in HS. I loved it so much, now I incorporated my knowledge of Snare into Banda. Which is the genre of music that I play and dedicate the majority of the channel too. Where do you march currently?
Fayette Alabama
I do appreciate you responding to my comment and I will watch more of your videos
Jig 2 remix
I'm a color guard watching cadences what am I doing
Maybe itâs time for a change đ€đ„
@@TAROLEANDO I mean, for pep band I was gonna try to learn percussion....
Go for it, donât regret it later for not trying out at least. đ„
@@TAROLEANDO oh, I won't have to try out. My band director is really nice, he's offered lessons for me even. The only problem is I don't think my parents are gonna let me put it into my schedule for next semester, since it takes up a class
jig 2
Franzen Jayco what is Jig 2?
search in youtube
Franzen Jayco I looked it up, and this is not that cadence. Where did you find it or where are the similarities, I would really like to know. This is a cadence from Fremont HS in South Los Angeles from the 90's maybe 80's. I marched with it from 2000-2004.
Jesus Alfonso Canal I'm pretty sure he meant for to play Jig 2 because of it's popularity.
+Divine Ninjas oh ok well thanks for the suggestion. I will try and upload it. What do you play?

Where do you hear that?
Olodum
Foxtrot
Play more towards the edge of the drum head, more of a ringing tone instead of a thud
Yes đđŒ I know - thanks for the unsolicited advice. On another note where do you play/teach at?
@@TAROLEANDO I am a high school student at South Carolina governor school of arts and humanities. Primary is violin, but I did bassooon for 5 years, drum line for two years and still keep up my chops
Dope, you have any videos posted or tutorials of your chops on display?
@@TAROLEANDO I can make a video and post tomorrow if you like :)
Tag me, and make it public. đ„âđŒ

We all paint different pictures in our heads. What do you play?
lol ive played drums for about a week now.. piano for 3 years tho
Cool man, keep on drumming. The things you've learned on piano will definitely help.on drums.
I play tenor quad I thought jig 2 was good đ€Ł

He did the tap off with his mouth. đčđč
And?
And I loved that lmao.
Oh ok. Itâs an audible, tenors donât really tap off.
Hehe true. x3
Wtf
Its a dope cadence but you need to work on your zones man they're pretty bad
Thanks for the unsolicited advice. Iâm not a tenor player, and I have been working on many things on several percussion instruments. Where do you march?
Jesus Alfonso Canal I march for manzano highschool and the New Mexico Adrenaline. Despite my channel Im going into junior year. I've worked pretty hard and wanna get other people as good as I can
Keep it up man. Hard work pays off, and youâre young. I know the flaws for this video, and have been told many times. Grant it maybe not as calm as you said it but, I keep the video up. Hope all goes well with you music career, take it easy and I hope you can benefit from some of my content.
Isnât this just tadpole from freedrumlinemusic.com?
Brandon De Dios I learn this Cadence at Fremont HS in South Central LA back in 2000. And I think it was being played as far back as the 80's. Its a cool cadence specially for lines that are going to the next level up from beginner. And you can also add more stuff to beef it up.Where do you march?
Different jungle. Disappointed to be honest. My drumlines is better
theBEnjamin32 O.A.S Would love to see it. Good to know, thanks. Got a Link?
@@TAROLEANDO
