- "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome": Is MSG a Public-health Villain? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Monosodium Glutamate or MSG is a flavour enhancer for food. But it has long been considered unhealthy. The term "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" was attached to it in the late 1960s and it has declared MSG a public-health villain. Is it safe to eat MSG? Palki Sharma tells you.

That’s nice for you, but those of us who are MSG sensitive would die after several hours of discomfort. Even in small amounts, MSG causes my heart to palpitate, throat to close, & difficulty breathing. Uncle Roger’s dream has come true. We Filipinos love our MSG!
Moderation is the key.
I remember when I was in college, my biology professors usually criticized about Chinese food containing lots of MSG. Today, many food in the US like instant noodles, chíp, and more have MSG. Some American chefs use MSG, too.
Philippines has been using that MSG but Filipino who are using that reach at the age of 90to 100 yrs old in the village. Stress and depression are the worst ingredients for cancer.
Thank you Palki for standing up against sinophobes.
I remember when the MSG scare came out in the 80's. I regularly ate at Chinese restaurants and loved the cuisine since I was a kid in the 70's. However, once a became an adult, I did notice one side effect - whenever I had Chinese food with alchohol, I would get bad headaches. So I stopped having beer with Chinese food and never had another headache when eating Chinese food.
i find it funny is that it is actually a japanese discovery. I'm not sure if it only applies to chinese food or asian foods in general that msg == bad..
@@theunbearables I spent 4 years of my childhood in Tokyo (68-72) and Ajinomoto was everywhere. My Mom kept a bottle in the kitchen as well. It wasn't until the 80's MSG scare that I found out that Ajinomoto = MSG. It wasn't just in Asian foods as lots of restaurants of various cuisines used it. It's just that the Chinese restaurants used it in every dish.
In the late 80's my older sister took me to an authentic Chinese restaurant in Manhattan, which was staffed by chefs from mainland China, that I realized that American Chinese food is not real Chinese food. American Chinese is very heavy in oils which was very expensive in China - real Chinese food doesn't use as much - they invented the Wok which allows cooking using not just less fuel, but also less oil. This is also the time when oils and fats, and especially saturated fats, became public enemy nbr 1 for the health conscious. Personally I think its the heavy use of oils and fats, which generally aren't used that much in authentic Asian foods, that made a lot of Asian foods considered as unhealthy - the use of MSG was just one part of it but because of the MSG scare, the use of MSG was blamed for why Chinese food was unhealthy even though it was the use of all those saturated fats.
Even I have had the same experience......

It’s just like any other seasoning. And if you’re allergic to it -just don’t eat it -like some people allergic to nuts or grains etc.
I remember there was a time when Koreans used to get a lot of hate for eating dog meat.
Whenever a society rises, there are bound to be some people who would not like to see that happening. They would go to great extent to malign the Food Culture of that country because food is considered an element of soft power.
That's why when i see people online ranting about Indian food causing diarrhoea especially highlighting the issues related to hygiene in Indian food, i try to remind myself that we aren't unique in this and that it happened with everyone.
I enjoy Indian food just like any other food I don’t see any problem with it, Indian curry and samosas are well loved.
I think the issue with hygiene is more linked with the street vendors in India, which same thing can be said in a lot of countries. But that’s just more about how the food is made, nothing to do with the cuisine itself.
Asian foods are delicious….!
Korea banned the dog meat, can Indians improve hygiene in their street food?

Some could be misled by original accidental process of making MSG. The boiling down method produces MSG in its form closer to its nature, no harsh chemicals used in producing it. It is my understanding that MSG can be produced at cheaper cost by fermentation, alkaline cookin,; the S part or Sodium may come from NaOH or sodium hydroxide which is a harsh chemical. This process can turn out MSG in a form so high in concentration. One teasoon of this can cause unpleasant symptoms to many. And one teaspoon of this possibly pure, MSG can be found in popular stir-fry dishes. MSG in its natural form sounds safe for daily diet. The chemically derived form sounds scary, don't you think?
