    People definitely knew it was fake before the 90s but didn't necessarily know to what extent it was fake. The curtain call just put it out in the open

      It's just like watching a magician, we know it's fake but it's whimsical to pretend it's real and be amazed by the skill and trickery, just like with any medium that tells a story. Just like the last seasons of Game of Thrones, we were reminded that the show was just a show, and the writing team was forced into a corner that they couldn't get themselves out of, tearing down the illusion that took so many years to build.

    • @dexterwilliams2520

      @@KaranthaneosTo be fair, Game of Thrones had plenty of ways to end the show and still keep some semblance of legacy; I think most of it comes down to "don’t have your characters take a steaming dump in their hands and then clap".

      @@Karanthaneos The reason why people enjoy watching magician is that he manages to trick your brain. If a wrestler was a magician, he would awkwardly hide "disappeared" objects and his main trick would be poorly executed "disappearing thumb".

    Generally in wrestling, the wrestlers have know where the cameras so they can hide the parts where moves seem too fake. And in the past, cameras were pulled back more and in lower quality so it was very difficult to see that punches weren’t actually landing.

    • @Danlows1
      @Danlows1 Před 2 měsíci

      @@ronanawesomeness6160eh, it depends on the time period, the style of wrestling and the individual wrestlers tbh. Watch the Rock or Austin. Austin is very obvious he’s not connecting with his punches when he does his Thesz Press.
      And yet in Japanese strong style wrestling, they are legit hitting each other hard, just in safe areas.

    YES! There was a small interview with CM Punk where he reacted to wrestling in movies, and he explained that wrestling started as a gig for carnival shows, where they would pin their strongman against the local village idiot that wanted to fight.
    That actually required a lot of skill, because the wrestler needed to look beatable because they made money out of beating overconfident cityfolks, but at the same time he needed to be able to absolutely beat the shit out of someone if things got out of hand, hence why they also started fixing the matches.

    MMA but done in a professional wrestling way has been done multiple times actually.
    As noted by a comment below, there's even a subset promotion of GCW(Game Changer Wrestling)called Bloodsport(founded by former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett).
    In 1989, the head of WWF(now WWE)Vince McMahon Jr had basically torn down the curtain by telling a court that pro wrestling is "sports entertainment", as in...it's not real. This was Vince being cheap by hoping to not pay athletic commissions.
    Oh, as for something horrible happening by accident, pro wrestlers have *died* during the show(most prolific being Owen Hart).

Not just in the training side of things everyone knows about, but he also took HUGE paycuts on several projects simply because he believed in them and the story they were telling, and wanted to money to go to other, bigger actors to make the movie a success.

    When I was 12 I met Rob Van Damme before he was famous and I asked him if wrestling is fake, he told me that, "We're not trying to fight and hurt each other in that ring, and to that part it's not real. But because what we do is very dangerous and we risk our safety, our health, our livelihoods and our lives every time we do a move, it's not fake."
    The first big move of shifting the mask aside, at least in a very public venue, was when Vincent McMahon Jr testified before the New Jersey gambling board that the wrestlers at the World Wrestling Federation(now called World Wrestling Entertainment of WWE for short) weren't actually fighting and what they were doing was action entertainment and exhibition wrestling. Then the Monday Night Wars happened. The Monday Night Wars were the prime time ratings war between World Championship Wrestling(WCW) and the World Wrestling Federation(WWF, now WWE) with their two principal shows, Nitro and Raw, where they would try to out compete each other for rating to be the top wrestling show on broadcast television, and attempting to steal away each others' talent. That pretty much killed the illusion that pro wrestling was a sport. The final nail in the coffin for pro wrestling being a sport was when Owen Hart, the younger brother of Bret Hart, was killed in a horrific accident in the middle of the at a WWF pay-per-view event. They had to stop the show while paramedics had to get his body out of the ring and arena. The head ringside commentator, Jim Ross, had to announcer simultaneously over the stadium's PA system and to the cameras that this was not part of the show and that a horrible accident had occurred. The following Monday night on both Nitro and Raw for the first 10 minutes of both shows there was no big fanfare, no wrestling, all the wrestlers at the event gathered in and biside the ring as they gave a 10 bell salute to the memory and career of Owen Hart. It was the first time I had seen so many big men weep. The stress of losing his brother in such a tragic way caused Bret Hart to have a stroke that permanently knocked him out of wrestling.

  • @therandominfochannel6619
    @therandominfochannel6619 Před 6 měsíci +2

    When you think about it, even the competitive part isn't wholly fake. While the performers aren't trying to beat one another into submission, they are still competing in putting on the best performance. They're just competing more with everyone not in the ring than the person(s) they're actually in the ring with. Opposite of a real fight. It matters because the better your performance, the better chance you have of moving up the card, getting bigger matches, more promos, and being granted championships as a face of the company.

    16:44 Hey, I have a story for this!
    My uncle is a massive wrestling fan, but turns out he was trafficking drugs and was caught and imprisoned in around mid-90s. I was born in the 2000's so I never got to actually meet him then. He was released around 2015 or 2016. I met him for the first time around then and he spent a few days in our home. During those days, of course he was chatting with us and learning about all the things that have changed, but he also asked my dad, his brother, about wrestling. My dad didn't know anything about it, but I was a really really big fan of it at the time. I told him about all the developments, the new, the old, the ones that left and the ones that are here now. Basically info-dumping on him.
    To put it simply, his mind was BLOWN. He was like a kid listening about the coolest anime ever. He's a massive fan even until now, at the ripe old age of late-50s. I grew out of wrestling bit by bit and got more into other stuff like D&D, but I still watch it once in a while. But when he comes over we still nerd out about wrestling.

    I think one suggestion you would like is the channel Secret Base's video called Section 1, part of their Dorktown series. It's not about just football, but the finale does depend on the result of the Pittsburgh Steelers VS the Baltimore Colts game in 1976.
    The overall presentation is reminiscent of top-tier Prezi slides, but the video actually runs on Google Earth. It makes great use of synchronized timelines, explanations on the football players involved, and scathing commentary on the government.
    The villain isn't one of the teams, it is a lone man who is a fan of the Colts.

    I didn't understand wrestling as a kid in the 90's, because I didn't get any exposure to the storylines of it and the actual wrestling wasn't super interesting to me. It wasn't until I watched a couple of videos about the better stories in the history of the WWE and was introduced to Wrestlemania by a friend who is a fan, they walked me through the various storylines that were going on at the time.

    I’m glad you’re doing his videos on wrestling now, or at least this one. Hopefully the others too. It’s always so unique to see people who don’t like wrestling - or at least, don’t WATCH wrestling - react to things like The Curtain Call. When you’re already a fan, these videos don’t quite hit the same as when you’re not, since I already know the appeal of it, most of the entertainment in these videos is getting to relive some of the matches he talks about. But someone who doesn’t watch this stuff like you, you seem to get genuine insight into learning things like kayefabe, the Kliq, and even "oh god I remember this why did they think it was a good idea to hang someone on live PPV there are kids watching this". Can’t wait for part 2, the Golden☆Lovers saga was a big part of my teenage years.

  • @VeggieGamer
    @VeggieGamer Před 10 měsíci +8

    You are right about the Kliq, weirdly they all had 'heel' characters, but often those are the ones that turn into the greatest Babyfaces!
    I think you misunderstood the point Eyepatch was making about up to the 90s, fans were able to invest in the show being real. 99% of the fans at this point know the results are predetermined, but the show it's self hadn't started to blur the lines into there being a 'real' and 'unreal' reality to wrestling that would go hand in hand.
    By the 90s there were undead wizards that could bring lightening down from the roof of the arenas, evil clowns that made children cry, dentists with bad teeth, even a evil Christmas Tree monster (played by the same guy as the dentist with bad teeth). It is more that the show 'allowed' fans to buy into that reality, but after the curtain call, the mix between what is real and scripted got very blurred.
    Ah, Steven Austin getting the torch passed to him from Bret Hart was I think 96 (could be 97).
    OH! Glad you broke the video into 2! I was worried you were going to skip the second half! XD Great reaction and it is really cool to see people react to Eyepatch Wolf's wrestling stuff! His latest one is excellent IMO (though it is an hour and a half long 0_0). Great stuff! So sorry for the long comment!
