How to Install a Pond bring Wildlife to the Garden - DIY Preformed Pond Complete Build

  • In this video I will be showing you how to install a pond. The pond I am installing is a preformed pond (an Oase PE1000), however the method used is transferable for installing smaller and bigger ponds both preformed and using a flexible pond liner. This pond was installed as a wildlife pond to help encourage more amphibians and insects into the garden to increase the biodiversity. It could be used as a fish pond if a pond filter and pump system were installed to clean and aerate the water. I installed this pond in the winter which isn't ideal for planting the pond out as the frost can kill the new plants because they are not established. I would recommend planting the pond out in the spring after your last frost date, this is because the plants will have time to establish and grow so they are strong enough to survive the cold winter weather. A pond is a great feature for any garden big or small and doesn't need to be hard work or a lot of maintenance. Especially a simple wildlife pond like this, it can just been seen as another flower bed to plant in that you don't need to weed just get non invasive native plants, watch them flourish and create an ecosystem.

    It's good to see the job being done properly. It is more complicated than amateur pond diggers seem to think!

      Hey Janet thanks so much. Absolutely a lot more thought and time goes into a pond to make it successful and thriving rather than just digging a hole and filling it with water. 😁👍

    Hi thanx for the info, I used a preformed pond and didn't make sure it was level. It was ok but I've decided in the new year to rectify it and make sure the end that isn't level will be. I dug it when it was a really wet weekend in the spring of 2022. But as it was my first attempt I soon learned .

      Hey fishtales thanks for the comment glad you found it helpful. Yes it's a really common problem with pre formed ponds, good on you for planning to fix it as it's never fun going back over your work but it's how we learn and grow. An idea to save emptying the whole pond and re digging bits (depending on size) if your pond has the overhanging lips you could carefully lever the areas that are low up with a spade and pack them up with slates or bricks depending on how much it needs to be raised. Then could bank soil or turf over those areas to hide the bricks/tiles/slates. Hope this helps and it all goes well 😁👍

    Sweet pond man! How does it look today? Your soil is so soft compared to the pure clay and rock I have to dig out to install mine this month. Georgia USA clay is hard as a rock.

      @gardenerstale  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Hey Brett thanks for the comment. I have been back to plant it up and will visit it again in the spring to split and re pot/plant in the silt layer the plants. It has had a huge amount of wildlife activity considering the short time it has been in. If you create the home nature really does come and find it. Yes it was an absolute joy to dig that soil super soft and easy I certainly don't envy the sound of your soil. It might be worth wetting it a few days before to soften it up? Or try a clay fork/mule? Although sometimes it's just hard graft that gets the job done good luck. 😁👍

    So I've finished the pond and am waiting for the rain to fill it up. I've got a few oxygenator plants which come in those plastic pots with lots of holes in, do I just weigh them down and put them in the water as is, (according to the appropriate depth)? They're for zones 3 and 4. Thanks.

    I put a baby wading pool in my yard & filled it w water for the critters. Pine needles & cones from the trees
    fall into the water & the raccoons & birds soil the water by bathing in it. THEN, green algae grows. I put
    some of those tablets for farm stock tanks but it did not help that I could see. SO, I got rid of it & got
    a 2 gallon dog dish. I still have the same problems but I can afford to throw away 2 gallons of water to
    wash & clean the dish before refilling it. The pool held 80 gallons. How to stop the algae?
    !

      @gardenerstale  Před 6 měsíci

      Hey Ourv9603 yes I can feel your pain it can be very hard to prevent algae when the water is constantly being contaminated by plant debris and animals as it provides nutrients for the algae to feed off. Sometimes the nutrients in tap water can encourage algue as well so try fill up with rain water if you can. Treatment for algue are things like pumps, filters, uv lights etc but in a natural pond this is not really an option. The best way to sort it out in a natural pond is to have plants in it which will help naturally filter the water taking nutrients away from the algae and preventing it from swamping the pond. You will always have a little bit of algae around the plant pots and in shadey areas but it's controlling it. If I see a small bit of algae growing I usually just take it out before it gets too big and spreads. Another option is getting a solar pump or fountain to oxygenate the water and keep the water moving/rippling as the algae needs still water to survive. Hope this helps you out 👍

      The best trick for permanent algae removal or just green water is to cover your pond with something that will block out the sun for 5 days as soon as you fill your pond you should do this it won't work if you let the water come in contact with the sun before the natural pond bacteria has time to grow when you remove the cover the bacteria will be starving for algae the water will be crystal clear and should stay that way even in direct sunlight if you don't like the idea of covering your new pond you can prepare a bin full of pond water bacteria to give you a headstart and cut the time down by 2-3 days in extreme cases of algae it's possible to just dump the old water refill and leave covered for a couple of weeks till all algae has been eaten from the rocks gravel etc pond plants just relocate till process is over this will work far better than any algae removal chemical this one very important step everyone misses then in as little as 5 days you have a big mess and much work to fix

    I’m just about to do this. I thought you would add water to the inside keeping the water level with the internal lines on the liner.

    • @gardenerstale
      @gardenerstale  Před rokem +2

      Hey Richard great to hear. Yes that is a way to get it level if you don't want to use a spirit level but some pre cast ponds don't have those lines on the inside and it wouldn't if you were installing a flexible liner so I wanted to show a method to level the pond that can be used across all types of ponds. 👍

      Hey George thanks for the comment, at the moment lots of invertebrates water boatmen, pond skaters, water bettles, loads of different larve etc and have put the plants in it to establish over time so with all this hopefully will encourage amphibian life to come later on in the year so can breed for next year 👍

    So ya dont have to have a filter n pump etc? Just fill it up n let nature take its course?

    • @gardenerstale
      @gardenerstale  Před 10 měsíci

      Hey Paddy for wildlife pond you do not need a filter or pump by putting plants they will help to oxygenate the water so insects and amphibians can live in it. If you want to reduce algue build up in your wildlife pond then you can put a small solar pump to help airate and move the water so its a bit clearer. However if you wanted to put fish in it however it would need a pump not only to oxygenate but to clean the water as well. Hope this helps 😁👍
