Thank you I never seen how a snow blower work's, I've seen them but Jeff you are the first one to show me how it accully work's. I live in Northen California we don't deal with snow unless higher elevation like Taho or Reno that's about a 4-5 hour's drive or I can drive 4-5 hour's down South and be at a Sunny beach. That's what makes it so great the location where I live. Close to the Ocean so it dosent get that hot. It can get really cold in the winter time a different kinda cold than Snow. The bone chilling cold from the cold Ocean. One thing if it's summer and it's a boiling hot day jump in the Ocean water it will be instant cooling down, you have to wear a wet suit so you don't catch hypothermia.
I know exactly what it is. The shift lever is spring loaded (wants to pull the lever forward). There is a stop which makes the traction wheel assembly rest in the 6th gear position. If you leave the blower stored in anything less than 6th gear the spring tension slowly stretches the shift cable over time throwing it out of proper alignment. The fix is to put it in 6th gear, loosen the nut on the slotted pie-shaped piece that the cable attaches to, adjust the piece to take out the slack and retighten the nut. If there is still slack after maximum adjustment you will need a new cable. When storing leave the machine in 6th gear...shouldn't have any more problems.
It could be a linkage adjustment to the shift lever, or the friction wheel inside shifted over. Snowblowers are the easiest things to work on, they are all pretty simple in design.
Very simple fix. Your blower has a friction disc drive. This is comprised of two spinning discs perpendicular to each other. (At a right angle). When you engage your drive lever, it moves the drive disc up to contact the other disc connected to the drive shaft. Depending on how far from the center of the drive disc, the blower will either drive faster or slower. (The closer to the center of the drive, the slower. The further away, the faster.) To gain reverse, the shaft disc must travel past the center of the drive disc (the opposite side and 180 degree rotation). This is all done with your shift lever. If you flip your blower up onto the auger housing and remove the belly pan, and actuate the shifter, you will see exactly what I am talking about. The shaft disc throw (selecting gears) is adjustable by either cable adjustments (as others have said), or....... you can mechanically reposition the shaft disc in either direction to fix it.
Also a good idea to make sure the hex shaft is clean and lubricated. I had an old MTD with the metal shift Rod that was not adjustable and after cleaning and lubricating that shaft it fixed the problem of going forward in R 1 after moving there from any of the forward speeds.
I just fixed a similar yardworks model. To get all your gears just adjust the cable that attaches to the gear handle. I just had to completely replace my cable this year after many years of use up in Alberta Canada.
Your snowblower works pretty well. Mine is second hand and only has a 5.5 hp engine. It's pretty wimpy, and I have to take it pretty slow. It still beats shoveling here in MN.
gravel in the grass thrown from my Husqvarna blower is such a pain to pick up in the Spring. plus the risk of hitting the house and cars and garage is high.
@@DaBossk No the old mower I had I fixed it was being thrown out needed a spark plug and a pull start rope but thats long dead for good past what I can do to fix it but really I dont use my backyard anymore since Gus passed away so I let it grow, it just blends in with the woods...
There are USA states that rarely get snow, and when it does snow they have massive car pileups. Case in point from a little while ago, the end of this video: czcams.com/video/6FHPdTWf2s0/video.html

When it comes time to replace it, look into the Ariens brand. You'll find far, far superior build quality over those MTD brands. I'm running an Ariens machine that's as old as I am and it keeps on going.
Running a walk behind snow blower is still a pretty good workout. You have to push and pull and lift. Its not as easy as it looks. Much more than a lawn mower.

if it is moved by a wire like a bicicle brake maybe it has lost tension in the wire that actuates the gears.
As far as losing a speed, the mechanism which slides the friction wheel may be worn out or out of adjustment.
Nice! We still use the Troy Bilt snow thrower my dad got in 1996! Those had NO plastic on them. Bullet proof item and was made im the usa back then
This winter has sucked and blowed. We have had almodt 60 inches here.

I definitely need to invest in a snowblower, I'm so damn sick of shoveling my drive way and sidewalks out every winter.
Man you guys have a lot of snow

Son, I need you to clear the driveway.
if you look underneath the gear lever there should be a rod with a threaded adjustement where it goes under the engine.
Thats what I was thinking, it probably backed off after the 6 years, should have a jam nut though?
Your snowblower works pretty well. Mine is second hand and only has a 5.5 hp engine. It's pretty wimpy, and I have to take it pretty slow. It still beats shoveling here in MN.
Should have a few different holes to adjust the cable to tighten in had the same problem with one at work the other day

Yes I do have to watch out for the cars and house windows but luckily I live in the woods so my yard is woods with lots of rocks already :)
Nice Troy Bilt , good video , I have same machine since 2008 , few videos had issues gotta stop by and see my Yankee ingenuity

More content on challenger please. Good video. Thinking on getting one (snowblower) after this winter.
I dont have it right now its been at a shop for the last 2 weeks...

I could of used one last week, snow melting here, Ohio South west.
u have to tighten the wheel nuts for the gears to work properly
thanks thats probably the problem :)

Check out donyboy small engine mechanic on you tube. He has a video on how to adjust cable to get lost gear back.
I mean any uk viewers looking at this wondering the chaos this much snow would cause in our country?
Yes, its a shame cos iv always wanted to use a snow blower hahah
