The video might look a bit dated, but these are two wonderful musicians at the top of their game. Guilda is a bit of an eccentric, but he plays superbly. The slow movement is very poignant, and the finale really bouncy and exuberant. I really lilted the way that he and Abbado manage the little exchanges between soloist and orchestra - particularly in the slow movement. I'm not one who goes shouting "best performance ever" at CZcams videos - but this is pretty darn good!

I think that's a very common development. I also preferred fast movements when I was younger, nowadays my favorites are almost always the slow movements, they're so much more emotional.

Friedrich Gulda to me represents the authoritative Mozart playing style for the modern Steinway piano concerto performance. He seems to find just the right balance and tone to make the powerful instrument hold back and yet sing with classical era expressiveness. Even through the poor audio this craftsmanship is apparent.

    • @jackcampbell2720

Yes - it's because the orchestra's bass-line is written into the piano part too. Some people think it means the pianist should play chords along with the orchestra to create a sense of community; other people like Charles Rosen feel it's simply for the pianist to follow. So a nice bit of disagreement there!
